1 Broadband Cable Networks April 20, (5) SCS100 CATVisor SNMP COMMANDER Introduction CATVisor SNMP Commander is configuration software for any device with SNMP agent. It has been designed specifically for agents with HMS support but can be used also with any SNMP agent. SNMP Commander can be integrated to any SNMP manager that can start external programs using a command line. The software can be easily customised to various applications be using standard.ini format text files. The SNMP Commander uses the standard Windows UDP/IP protocol stack for communication with devices. Functions Functional description SNMP Commander has the following functions: View and edit selected MIB-2 objects View HMS Alarm Log table Edit HMS property tables in an user-friendly way View and configure operating parameters of specific products Customisable by text files Start-up with command line parameters Starting up SNMP Commander is started up by supplying the required parameters on the command line. Available parameters are: Agent IP address Read and Read-Write community strings UDP port If a command line parameters is not supplied, user-defined or hard-coded default values are used. If no IP address is supplied, the product will ask the user to type in one. Several instances of SNMP Commander may be open simultaneously for viewing and configuring several network elements at the same time. Configuration management SNMP Commander has a number of standard GUI pages fro viewing and configuring the element s operating parameters. The selection on pages is element specific, defined by the element s sysobjectid. If the sysobjectid for an element is unknown, only predefined default pages will be displayed. SNMP Commander release 1.1 comes with the following viewer pages. 1. MIB-2 System (basic identification information) 2. MIB-2 SNMP (SNMP agent statistics)

2 Broadband Cable Networks April 20, (5) 3. MIB-2 Interfaces (interface configuration and statistics) 4. HMS Status (a collection of current status information) 5. HMS Alarm Log 6. HMS Analogue Properties (analogue alarms configuration) 7. HMS Discrete Properties (discrete alarms configuration) 8. HMS Common (HMS specific identification information) 9. HMS MAC&RF (HMS MAC and RF parameters) 10. BK (BK-Optiflex specific GUI) 11. ACx (ACess specific GUI) 12. DVI (DVX - DVI switches) In addition to these a viewer dll for Phoenix HMTS is available as separate product. Figure 2 shows an SNMP Commander screenshot with the MIB-2 page opened. The programme title displays the agent s syslocation together with it s IP address supplied at the command line. The screenshot also shows all pages available in release 1.1. The Station page is a device specific page depending on the device being contacted. The page collection available for each element can be easily customised.ini format text files. Figure 1 MIB-2 System page Figure 2 shows a snapshot of SNMP Commander screen with the BK page opened. The current release has element specific support only for BK-Optiflex products. However, element specific pages can be easily added simply by installing a new viewer DLL. There is no need to install a new version of the whole product to add element specific support.

3 Broadband Cable Networks April 20, (5) Figure 2 SNMP Commander User Interface for BK-Optiflex Fault management SNMP Commander is always used in a session mode, connected to a selected element and therefore has no functionality that could be used to monitor a system with a large number of elements. This comes from the fundamental design that assumes that SNMP Commander is always used together with an SNMP manager. However, SNMP Commander has the following fault management oriented functions: view the HMS current alarm table view the HMS alarm log Figure 3 shows a snapshot of the HMS Status page. It is a collection of some basic status information of the element: temperature current time service terminal status alarm status current alarm table

The database is in text format and can therefore be easily customised by the user. The MIB database is used e.g. by the HMS viewer pages to display OID labels instead of numerical OID values. SNMP Commander release 1.1 comes with the following MIB database files:

The customisable options include: Default values for community strings and UDP ports Default viewer pages for elements with unknown sysobjectid The collection of viewer pages for a certain sysobjectid (or IP address) The collection of MIB files preloaded for a certain sysobjectid (or IP address) Refresh rates for each viewer page Computer requirements Pentium 400 MHz or higher 128 MB RAM 1 GB of free hard disk space Network Interface Card Display with minimum 1024 x 768 resolution and 256 colours Operating systems Windows XP/2000/NT 4.0/ME/98 SP2 or higher for Windows 2000, SP6 or higher for Windows NT Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher Recommended operating system is Windows XP
