1 Supervisor Certificate---Get with the Program! Mary Arredondo, Ph.D., NCSP Referenced below are some recommended avenues to explore for obtaining administrative coursework, considering your preferred style of learning, cost of courses and scheduling convenience. Many of you may be more interested in pursuing a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, with enough hours to also obtain state certification as a superintendent. Speech-language pathologists are now eligible to pursue this certificate, as well as the Supervisor level certificate, in that both of these certificates no longer require classroom teaching experience, nor a teaching certificate. You are NOT allowed, however, to obtain a Principal Certificate without three years teaching experience and the prerequisite teaching credential. Arizona State University: To learn about the ASU application process, go to: For a listing of courses, go to: ASU offers a State Board approved program providing the course requirements leading to the Supervisor Certificate. Cohort groups are also available at a variety of school district locations. Check with your own district about allowing you to join an administrative training cohort. You may need to inform your district of the new State Board rule allowing speech-language pathologists to obtain certain administrative certificates, since this will be a change. Perhaps a department effort would be more effective in larger districts. Elective Coursework Leading to Partial Eligibility for an Arizona Supervisor's Certificate EDA 511-School Law EDA 526-Instructional Supervision EDA 544-State/Local Finance and Budget EDA 515-Administration/Technology in Learning EDA 584-Supervisory Internship Other 3 credit hour courses available as electives include: EDA 501-Competency/Performance in Educational Administration EDA 510-Intro to Organization & Administration of Public Schools EDA 525-Human Relations/Societal Factors in Education EDA 548-School/Community/Family Connections EDA 573-School Personnel Administration EDA 591-Policy & Regulation Development Total= 18 s.h. 1

Twelve (12) of the eighteen (18) hours required must be earned at Arizona State University. Grand Canyon University Contact Jennifer Jones directly to help you with the enrollment process: Jennifer Jones M.Ed Assistant Director of Continuing Education Grand Canyon University 3300 W. Camelback Rd. Phoenix, AZ Toll Free: ext Local: Fax: [email protected] At Grand Canyon University, you may take as many courses as you like as a non-degree seeking student, with a very simple application process, at $440 a credit hour ($1320 a class). There is no application fee. Tuition is expensive everywhere but GCU has private loan assistance and deferred monthly payment plans to assist students. All the educational administration classes are available online and run for 8 weeks. The summer courses begin June 29 th. Given the intensity of an 8 week online course, they suggest you take one class at a time. Since the Supervisor Certificate course sequence without a degree is new to them, they advise at this point that you might have to take the first 15 hours with Grand Canyon to be admitted to the practicum course. This practicum course requires 20 hours of administrative work per week for 8 weeks and must be done during the school year, to provide a normal school experience. At all the universities, applicants find their own practicum placements under a certified administrator, most typically in their own district. Go online to Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Education Administration (Good source of course listing) at: Note, too, that at Grand Canyon the online POS 300 course of Arizona/Federal Government is a single 3 unit course that meets the State Department requirement for constitution. SEI courses are also available. 2
3 Northern Arizona University NAU has many campuses around the state, in addition to the main campus in Flagstaff. They also offer online courses. Remember that several university programs require a minimum number of courses be taken through them, in order to qualify for the practicum. The practicum experience class at NAU is a work experience class requiring you to have administrative on-the-job training, typically in your own district, of at least 135 hours. Go to the NAU website under Distance Learning to learn more about campus locations and online classes: ( or ). University of Arizona If you check online for courses in the Educational Leadership Department at U of A, you will see that they offer a master s degree in leadership. Most university leadership programs are geared toward school principalship certification, in that it requires 30 hours of administration courses and is convenient for also getting a master s degree. Supervisor Certificate candidates have not been the emphasis because there is much less request for this certificate. At the U of A, however, they will take Supervisor Certificate candidates, as well as graduate degree students. Contact Dr. Kris Bosworth to see how best to enroll and for information about how many credit hours you are allowed to transfer, such as from online courses at other universities. Consult their website for further information: North 25th Avenue Phoenix, AZ Be sure to also investigate course availability, especially for meeting the SEI and constitution requirements, at additional junior colleges near you. As you are no doubt aware, the state universities are undergoing major reorganization, including making decisions regarding tuition costs and possible surcharges for students. Continue to check university websites for updated tuition information. Also, for a more official listing of state requirements and an application form, go to: Click on Certification. Perhaps you have given some thought to your future career path. There are many challenges facing education: school district financial stresses and the cutting of student learning support systems, serving greater numbers of more difficult clients, etc. As a supervisor, you can have greater control over some of these challenges and improve the practice of speech-language pathology in Arizona. Let s be part of the solution and get with the program! 5
