2 The friends and family who bolster businesses This Big Issues for Small Businesses report is the fifth in a series of bi-annual insights from Lloyds Bank Insurance aiming to build an understanding of the issues affecting Britain s microbusinesses today. Previous reports have identified a healthy level of entrepreneurialism in the UK and an aspiration amongst business owners to attain success as quickly as possible. In the latest report we look at the support microbusiness owners receive from family and friends in their ventures. Starting and running a business can be all-consuming, so it s great to see family and friends rally around small business owners to ensure they are successful. However, as family and friends are called upon to help out with everything from major business decisions to day-to-day management, the impact of using personal contacts as a resource needs to be properly considered. 3 Businesses get by with a little help from friends 2/3 (64%) of Britain s microbusinesses rely on support from friends and family to run their business. 4 The UK family support economy could be worth 64.3 million per week in wages* Businesses relying on mates rates 41% 51% of microbusiness pay their family and friends with an average of 14 an hour 10% of microbusiness don t pay anything of all business owners say that without the support of family and friends their business would not be able to keep going The real value of the family support network 28% say they help make decisions that have brought about very positive results for the business say that the help of friends/family was crucial in keeping the business running 84% of microbusinesses believe the contribution of friends or family has had a positive impact on their business 30% say they provide emotional support say that without this support they would be overwhelmed by work 13% say it increases revenue 35% say it makes the business more manageable 25% say it increases productivity Big Issues for Small Businesses 04

5 The people are in place, but is the protection? 51% Of the of microbusinesses that have experienced issues over the last 12 months... 27% 15% 9% had to reduce operating capacity until it was resolved reported a reduction in income 10% said the business was unable to trade until it was resolved said they had to use personal funds to cover the shortfall and get the business operating again What about the future? are unaware that having appropriate business insurance is a legal necessity 18% had the right insurance in place to protect their business in the last incident experienced within 12 months 28% don t have insurance for business interruption for where it is potentially relevant don t have insurance for personal accidents for where it is potentially relevant have insurance for cash cover for where it is potentially relevant Our research shows that a third of microbusiness owners have experienced issues in the past year, ranging from technology failures to employee sickness, which resulted in over a quarter operating at reduced capacity. In these cases, it is vital for business owners to know their options and have the right insurance for their needs yet only 18% of those who faced issues in the last 12 months had appropriate protection. It s very important that businesses realise the extent to which having the correct policy in place can both safeguard your business and help it prosper. 6 About Big Issues for Small Businesses Big Issues for Small Businesses is a bi-annual report commissioned by Lloyds Bank Insurance, designed to build an understanding of the issues affecting Britain s microbusinesses and sole traders. The latest report examines the impact that family and friends have on the way in which these businesses operate. Methodology Research consisted of 502 UK decision makers in microbusinesses and sole traders, conducted online between 21st May and 2nd June 2015 by Opinium Research on behalf of Lloyds Bank Insurance.
