1 First ABBI and FISH-BOL Neotropical Working Group Meeting First Circular March 2007 Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia Buenos Aires, Argentina
2 The Consortium for the Barcode of Life is supporting the first meeting of the Neotropical working groups for the two main global barcoding projects, the All Birds Barcoding Initiative (ABBI) and the Fish Barcode of Life Initiative (FISH-BOL). During the meeting, the advances of the projects will be presented, and the regional strategies for both initiatives will be planned and discussed. Participants include researchers from the Neotropics and from other regions of the world with a strong interest and active involvement in the Neotropical birds and fishes (see appendix I for the complete list of participants). Venue The meeting will be hosted by the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia (MACN), in Buenos Aires, Argentina between March 14 and 16, MACN is located at 470 Ángel Gallardo Avenue, in the geographic center of the city, and at a 20 minute taxi drive from the main downtown area. More information about the museum can be found at Funding The meeting will be funded by CBOL and is being organized by ABBI and FISH-BOL administrations, with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the South American Marine Census of Life, MACN and CONICET (the National Research Council of Argentina).
3 Program The meeting will start on the morning of March 14 with the registration of participants, followed by a joint opening session in which overviews of Barcoding, ABBI and FISH-BOL will be presented. The rest of the first day activities, as well as those of the following day, will be conducted separately and simultaneously for ABBI and FISH-BOL. These activities will involve presentations of the advances in the barcoding of particular geographic areas and taxonomic groups, and the discussion of several issues related to the design of a regional strategy. These issues include the availability of tissue samples, the regional capacity for producing barcodes, the restrictions and policies for obtaining collection, import and export permits, and the optimization of sampling efforts. The closing session, on the morning of March 16, will bring the two groups together and will promote their interaction and set short, medium and long term goals. See appendix II for the complete program. Background information General information: Basic information about the Barcoding of Life Project can be obtained from the brochure Barcoding of Life Illustrated which is attached in the same as this circular. More information is available at and phe.rockefeller.edu/barcode ABBI: The brochure Barcoding Life takes flight and the Report of the ABBI Inaugural Workshop (Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, 7-9 September 2005) are also attached.
