Oakland 2 Oakland (O2O) Steve Linden, Oakland Community College Steve Shablin, Oakland University 2011 MCCA Student Success Summit 1
Oakland Community College Established in 1964 and began offering classes in Fall 1965 Five campuses in Oakland County - located in Auburn Hills, Farmington Hills, Royal Oak, Southfield, and Waterford Fall 2011 overall first-day enrollment was 28,577 students with almost 250,000 credit hours Largest of Michigan s 28 community colleges and 25 th nationally Largest freshman class in Michigan Top 35 grantor of associate degrees in the United States More than 100 two-year degree programs and over 45 one-year certificate programs Colleague client 2
Oakland University One of the 15 MI public universities Founded in 1957 Located in the city of Rochester, Oakland County Fall 2010 Headcount 19,053 45% of students from Oakland County 30% of students from Macomb County 131 baccalaureate degree programs 126 graduate degree and certificate programs SunGard BANNER client Golden Grizzlies 3
Governor s Executive Order of June 2004: Cherry Commission on Higher Education Improve High School Preparation Expand Postsecondary Participation Increase Degree Completion Maximize Economic Benefits 4
Policy Recommendations / Three Goals Double the percentage of residents who attain postsecondary degrees or other credentials that link them to success in Michigan s new economy Improve the alignment of Michigan s institutions of higher education with emerging employment opportunities Build a dynamic workforce of employees who have the talents and skills needed for success in the 21 st century 5
Next Logical Step O2O O2O agreement signed by OCC Chancellor and OU President on March 25, 2010, at Meadowbrook Hall The purpose of the Concurrent Enrollment/Dual Degree program is to increase the number of students who successfully complete both an associate s degree and baccalaureate degree. This goal is accomplished by allowing students to simultaneously earn credits toward both an associate s degree and a baccalaureate degree, rather than requiring students to enroll separately for an associate s degree, and then transfer their earned credits toward a baccalaureate degree. How did we get here from there? 6
The O2O Advantage OCC and OU are just down the street from each other literally Joint admission through one online application Cost savings for students Coordinated financial aid with OU as the home institution Expanded course selection Enhanced advising and course planning Access to the on-campus resources at both institutions Timely completion of associate s and bachelor s degrees 7
O2O Implementation Steering Committee and Implementation Team Memo of Understanding between OCC and OU Communication Plan Admissions Application Online and Processes Defined Financial Aid Consortium Agreement Advising, Orientation and Program Guides Course Data Exchange (EDI) Registration and Records Resources and Budget 8
Getting Started Winter Students Applied 16 Students Admitted 14 Students Enrolled 6 Students Enrolled in OU classes only 7 Students Enrolled in OCC classes only 1 Student Enrolled at both OU and OCC 9
O2O Students Fall 2011 Number of O2O Students 149 Number of O2O Students in OU classes ONLY 75 Number of O2O Students in OCC classes ONLY 28 Number of O2O Students in both OU and OCC classes 46 10
Advantages of Our Partnership Better staff understanding of transfer options between schools Working with our counterparts elsewhere Learning from our counterparts elsewhere Coordinated CC2O efforts among all partner institutions 11
Challenges of Our Partnership Getting everyone on the same page about the O2O program (a.k.a., communication) Differing deadline dates Student and staff misunderstanding of what the O2O program really is Data exchange between institutions Maintaining staff involvement in the O2O program now that implementation is behind us 12
Looking Forward Increasing the number of CC2O partnerships Continuing growth of O2O enrollment numbers Additional O2O marketing to OCC and OU students Improvements to data exchange processes Guiding students to graduation at OCC Improvements to reverse transfer opportunities at OCC Identifying someone else at OCC to take the O2O reigns 13
