7 Introduction Thirty- eight years ago, the faculty and students at the University of Hawaii s Shidler College of Business had a vision. That vision was brought to life through a conference where students, faculty, and professionals could take A Glimpse Into The Future. Also known as the AGIF Conference, students, faculty, and professionals came together to learn about the current and future trends in the ever- changing field of accounting and business. Since then, faculty and students have carried on this annual tradition on Veteran s Day. Through the years, the conference has addressed new issues facing the accounting profession. 8 Speaker Biography Schedule Joseph Mendez Technology Risk Consultant Deloitte Touche LLP The Internet of Things: Risks Rewards Joseph Mendez is an experienced consultant in Deloitte Touche LLP s Enterprise Risk Services Advisory Practice in Honolulu, HI. Joseph has over ten years of experience in the areas of military operations, government and military intelligence, data analysis, and information technology. Joseph s industry experience includes financial services, health care, education, government, and military. He has worked with his clients in the areas of enterprise risk management, internal audit, and information technology controls. Prior to joining Deloitte, Joseph served for 10 years in the United States Marine Corps as a linguist and a Signals Intelligence analyst for the National Security Agency. As a distinguished graduate of the USAF School of Applied Cryptologic Science, Joseph garnered operational experience in complex data analysis, communications, and intelligence processing ranging in scope from the tactical level to long- term strategic liaison with international partners. For his work in these areas, Joseph is the recipient of the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Her industry experience includes financial services, health care, education, government, and not for profit. She has assisted clients in designing and evaluating business process and information technology internal controls. Carey combines operational, financial reporting and IT audit experience; assisting her clients with business process and information technology control assessments and improvements. She has assisted clients in designing and evaluating business process and information technology internal controls. As a designated subject matter specialist in the areas of risk assessment, internal audit and IT controls, Carey led the development of Deloitte s IT Risk Framework for Internal Audit. She also developed and delivered two national training courses for Deloitte: IT Risks and Controls for Internal Audit and IT Audit Risk Assessment Methodology Training. Lee, CPA Tax Partner Accuity LLP Shades of Gray Worldly Wise: Observations of Topics Regarding Life Your Career Blane Ruschak attended Rutgers College in New Jersey and graduated with a B.S. in Economics, and subsequently attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he received a Master in Accounting degree. After graduation, he began his career in the audit department of the KPMG Honolulu office and has since moved between Montvale, New Jersey, Long Beach, and Los Angeles, working in a number of different capacities. Blane currently serves as the KPMG member on the Beta Alpha Psi Advisory Forum and as the current President on the Board of Directors, serving on the Board of the Accounting Program Leadership Group, Board of Directors of the Education Foundation for Women in Accounting, and formerly having served on the AICPA Pre- certification Executive Education Committee, and the Board of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy. Blane lives in Charleston, South Carolina and works out of the Montvale, New Jersey National Office as part of the National Human Resource team. Wendell K. Lee is the leader of the Tax Practice and has been with the Firm since He is also the leader of the office s not- for- profit tax practice. He earned his B.B.A. degree from the University of Southern California, and his Master of Taxation from the University of Denver School of Law. Wendell s areas of expertise include private company services that include privately owned companies and the tax issues faced by their owners and heirs, including estate and trust planning and taxation. He also has extensive experience with non- profit taxation and governance. Macanas focuses his practice on transactional work relative to Hawaii Estates, Trusts and Elder Law. He earned his B.S. degree from Brigham Young University (Provo), his J.D. from the University of Utah and is currently matriculated at Boston University School of Law's Graduate Tax Program for an L.L.M. (Master of Laws) in Taxation. Since 2011, he has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Hawaii's Kapiolani Community College, where he teaches Estate Planning Probate and Business Entities (LLCs, Corporations Partnerships). Jarrett is admitted to the Hawaii State Bar Association and the Utah State Bar and is a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association's Estate Planning Probate, Elder Law and Tax Sections and Hawaii Estate Planning Council. He is a frequent lecturer for NBI (National Business Institute/CLE) and a regular presenter for various financial education groups. Sarah Lee Morihara oversees the operations of the brokerage and property management divisoins, ensuring service delivery to the company s clients, providing client consultation, and providing guidance and support to the agents and property managers. She received her B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Denver, and her J.D. from the University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law. Sarah s background is in real estate law, having practiced at one of Honolulu s largest law firms, Cades Schutte.
