9 The Herbert L. Lang Institute for Excellence in Ministry Rev. Dr. Herbert Lang, founder and first President of the Mississippi Baptist Seminary and Bible College, was called of God to provide transformational, biblically grounded Christian education to African American pastors and lay leaders who desperately needed it in order to better serve God and God s people. This mission continues to drive all that we do. But since our founding in the 1940 s much has changed in seminary education across the nation. In order to meet the demands of an ever evolving culture we need to employ new strategies so that our churches and the leaders who serve them will serve this present age with boldness and excellence. The Lang Institute endeavors to offer pastors, deacons, church officers, and other Christian servant leaders the transformational learning opportunities that will contribute to excellence in twenty-first century ministry. Rooted in tradition, this leadership institute will engage present opportunities and obstacles with innovation, vision, and courage. Unlike the traditional undergraduate or graduate degree, the life-changing education one receives through the Lang Institute meets Christian servant leaders where they are academically and challenges them to stretch into deeper learning outcomes within a diverse peer education context. Whether you are starting out in ministry, have been in ministry for years, or are simply searching for better ways to serve your church or community, this course of study is for you! The Institute will be based on the cohort model, taking no more than scholars per term. Each scholar will be asked to apply or be recommended by a pastor or Convention leader. Once admitted, each scholar will attend several Saturday sessions at the Seminary s Jackson campus for half a day. There will be research and writing work due
10 at many of these residence settings. The course of study will last at least a year and no more than two years, culminating in a capstone writing project that must be orally defended before faculty. Each scholar will have a pastor-mentor assigned to him or her at the time of admission. With the generous financial support of local churches and grants, the costs of the Institute will be minimum or non-existent for the scholar. We will have four scholarship vehicles, which include the Jerry Young Scholarship for Transformational Ministry, the Fannie Lou Hamer Scholarship for Christian Women s Leadership, the John M. Perkins Scholarship for Justice and Reconciliation, and the David Matthews Scholarship for Rural Ministry Excellence. Each student receiving a scholarship from one of the respective sources will be required to do work that reflects the nature of the scholarship s mission (ex.: a Young Scholar will be expected to do capstone project on anything that relates to transforming local church or organizational culture.) Courses will be led by qualified scholars and practitioners who possess at least a Masters degree in their respective area or its equivalent. Moreover, scholars will be blessed by the instruction and readings of some of our nation s leading theologians, professors and pastors. Courses will include core and elective classes. A sample listing is below.
