2 Why NMP? The New Managers Programme is Wits Business School s entry level programme for managers. It is oriented a new managers or managers growing from a technical specialist to a general management role. The NMP is first step for career progression into a general and senior management position, where ability to understand all the different areas in a business and to adopt new and improved ways of managing self and others is a key criterion of success. The WBS New Managers Programme: Introduces managers to business principles and skills in management areas Gives participants methods of coping with the pressures that accompany advancement in the workplace Improves participants skills in written communication, thereby improving their ability to generate action through the written word Improves participants decision-making and problem-solving abilities Helps participants work more effectively in teams. Provides an understanding of how financial information is collected and used within an organisation Give participants an overview of the basic principles of marketing, particularly within the South African context. This is accomplished by enhancing skills in analysing and evaluating complex information and increasing understanding of organisational dynamics. The use of group work in the learning process ensures that all participants profit from interaction with their peers. Fees & Applications Fees The inclusive course fee is R which covers tuition, textbooks, course packs, examinations and refreshments. Applications Application forms are available from or can be requested from the NMP Programme Manager Jackie Mthembu on or jackie. mthembu@wits.ac.za. The completed application form should be forwarded to the Programme Manager, Jackie Mthembu. Places will be offered to suitable candidates on a first-come, first-served basis. Those applicants who are accepted will be notified, at which time the full course fee must be paid. Registration will be completed only on receipt of the fee. Cancellation will be accepted with no charge up to one month before the course starts. Cancellations after that time will incur a cancellation fee of R No refund can be paid after the first attendance on the programme. Selection Participants will be selected on the basis of their management track record and their commitment to career development. Previous academic or professional qualifications are a positive advantage but are not a prerequisite for the programme. Who should attend? The programme is well suited to newly appointed managers and individuals who are being groomed for their first management position. Age or educational qualifications are not a determining criteria for admission. Successful students from past programmes have been drawn from a wide range of educational levels and backgrounds as well as from different age groups. Young managers and technical specialists who have moved into management positions will benefit from the course because of its coverage of the key disciplines of business and its emphasis on developing well-rounded managers. The programme specifically caters for those candidates who do not have the five years management experience necessary for admission to the Wits Business School s Management Advancement Programme (MAP). The NMP programme has an NQF level 7 rating by the University of Witwatersrand. Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive a Certificate of Competence.

3 Programme Convenor Carl Wagner Carl Wagner, a registered Counselling Psychologist, has experience in Organisational Development and Change Management. He studied at RAU(now University of Johannesburg) and Unisa, completing a Masters Degree in Psychology. Carl set up BluSkye People Solutions, a consulting company, in BluSkye specialises in the areas of management and leadership development, team development, psychological assessment and general change management and organisational development consulting. He specialises in conducting personality/ behavioral assessments for selection and recruitment, as well as for training and development purposes. Carl runs Management and Leadership Development programmes for different companies. He currently consults in the area of Change Management and Organisational Transformation. He also assists with the Change Management and Communication issues for large IT implementations. He has lectured on Organisational Development and Management/ Leadership for a number of years. He started his career at NIPR (a division of the HSRC) and then moved into consulting, where he specialised in the field of management and supervisory development. Carl also worked as the Training where he specialised in the field of management and supervisory development. Carl also worked as the Training Manager (regions) for Afrox Limited. Programme Manager Jackie Mthembu With many years of experience, Jackie started at Wits Business School (WBS) as a CPIR Programme Manager. 4 Programme Structure COURSE Managing Resources in a Business Collecting and Using Financial Information SYNOPSIS This is an introduction to management accounting. It deals with allocation and the behaviour of costs, the causal relationship between margins, volumes, and expenses in generating profit, break-even analysis and the budgeting process. Participants are introduced to the accounting cycle from the processing of source documents to the aggregation of financial transactions into financial statements dates NMP 85 (full time) 10 March-13 June 2014 Block 1: March 2014 Block 2: April 2014 Block 3: May 2014 Block 4: June 2014 Understanding Organisational Dynamics Managing People The purpose of this module is to give participants a better understanding of the functioning of the human side of the organisation. Performance Management is a major challenge facing the newly appointed manager. In this module aspects such as motivation, delegation and performance appraisals are covered. The module starts with the basic principles of marketing. Marketing processes and channels of distribution from producer to retailer are traced and the implications for the market system are explored. The marketing assignment requires participants to examine the competitive position of their organisation.
