10 The old way of viewing IT, and the architectures of the past client-server era, just don t cut it. We need a new model for IT, one that breaks free from the past, and embraces our future. One that is purpose built for the cloud era. Just as the client-server era dramatically changed the landscape of IT following the mainframe era, the cloud era will dramatically change the landscape once more. This is where business today are now looking at PaaS, SaaS and DaaS 10

Rigid & Complex: Hardware centric model is inflexible to changes and updates making it Difficult to manage: Any change can break the system making change hard in highly distributed environments resulting in High Operational Costs: associated with the sneakernet in moves/add/changes and high cost of support Security Risks: associated with apps and confidential data walking out of the confines of the office every day on laptops Poor SLA: things break frequently and are difficult to resolve because of the tightly integrated layers 12

13 The changing dynamics of end user computing are putting pressure on IT from every direction leaving them locked in a vicious cycle with no means of escape. 15 And what about cloud computing? How is that changing the PC? The cloud is pulling the desktop in different directions and changing the landscape of computing. Public cloud on the rise with SaaS apps and cloud data stores Majority of new ISVs are SaaS providers eliminating the need for local infrastructure and using OS agnostic web browsers for app delivery Many organizations targeting functions like , office productivity and collaboration apps to migrate to public cloud Why is this important? The PC is no longer the dominant force in end user computing, it is just one of the access devices available to get to data and apps that can reside inside or outside your network. The web browser is rising in importance as the critical application to deliver business applications. We are entering the post-pc (Windows) era but there is a long tail of Windows based applications in the enterprise. What we need is a model that is dynamic and flexible to support both Windows and non-windows based applications, many different platforms and things inside and outside the network. 15

18 So what we have now moving into this post PC era is a desktop that has the ability to follow us no matter what device we are connecting from. This approach enables to free the workforce from the desk, giving a more flexibly approach to access. An added benefit of this flexibility is around security as we are now centralising the data and hence can apply more granular security to who can gain access to this information. 16

20 These 4 drivers stem from a series of interdependent challenges that have crippled IT over the last 5 years: 1. More regulations and compliance directives around IT in the last 5 years then the first 50. This includes more stringent segregation of duties, encryption and protection of personal information from health records to credit information across several audit bodies. A typical bank will have as many as 5 audit bodies investigating compliance of Basel, Personal Credit Information Act, Office of Thrift supervision, Graham Leach Bliley, and many other accords insert regional regulations on a per country basis here. 2. Decentralization of the workforce has required enhanced agility (work from home, remote office, foreign networks) and flexibility for users to be mobile. 3. OS Migrations have proven disruptive to business continuity and productivity. First XP SP2 broke 50 mission critical applications such as Siebel, then IE 7 broke several applications when deployed and now Vista comes with 31 categories of application compatibility issues that break many critical systems. This has caused many Enterprise s to either skip vista or defer to a longer test. 4. Finally, in the world of mergers and acquisitions, embedded agents for delivery with OS and Hardware vendors, and the many accompanying tools 18

21 (SMS, Altiris, BMC, HP, IBM, CA), Customers are looking for ways to simplify their application packaging process and streamline deployment through multiple mechanisms depending on the needs of the business. 18

22 Just as virtual machine technology decouples the operating system from hardware, Application virtualization breaks the bond between software applications and operating systems to deliver the same benefits of flexibility, portability and isolation. An application virtualization approach enables corporate IT and ISVs to plug into existing Application Management systems to deliver untethered applications across a variety of similar OS versions (NT, XP, Vista) to enable applications to move with users as needed while complying with corporate directives. 19

23 What we can do with application virtualization is put IT back in control of the desktop. With application virtualization it removes the need for users to have local admin privileges at the local device. By delivering a pre-packaged application this removes the requirement for local admin rights. This approach can be applied to both physical and virtual machines. CLICK Essentially this allows IT to decouple/manage the platform OS and applications independently of each other 20

24 What is Application Virtualization? Application virtualization can be either an agent or agentless solution that can be used to deliver virtualized applications for virtual and physical desktops How does Application virtualization Work? Application virtualization encapsulates each application and all components required for it to run in an isolated container. User specific configurations and changes are stored in their own unique sandbox (server, user s PC, or USB stick) Application virtualized applications can be linked together to have multiple applications share interdependent components (Java,.Net). This ability keeps the package size small and eliminates the restrictions and dependencies on vendor roadmaps. What is the benefit of Application virtualization? Application virtualization brings a unique approach by allowing users to run multiple versions of the same application (like MS Office, web browsers, etc..) side by side without conflicts because resources are unique to each application. 21

25 Applications are encapsulated in their own container Each application is separated from other applications and the operating system Application virtualization intercepts file and system calls between the application and the OS Process Loading. The VOS loads a starting EXE file from the Virtual File System and allows it to execute any other EXE directly from the Virtual File System or from the local file system. DLL Loading. The VOS loads any DLL dependencies the EXE/DLL/OCX files may have directly from archive when instructed. Thread & Process Management. The VOS is responsible for keeping track of all processes and threads created inside the virtual machine including out-of-process COM and utility applications. 22

In fact, the typical company spends upwards of 70% - 80% of their IT budgets to simply maintain the status-quo, leaving the business starved for new and updated capabilities. We have reached a point where business opportunity is literally trapped in IT infrastructure. 27
