2 Predictive Quality Control When Quality Control is not enough Quality Control is usually defined from "static" properties obtained under a specified test condition Most processes occur under strict time constraints which in general correlate to "dynamic " properties Performance is usually defined from dynamic properties obtained as a function of time Quality Control is a key element in order to meet customer's expectations. Quality Control is there to ensure each delivery meets agreed specifications and test data from your production are stored to verify the product quality. But what happens if your customers still find your products sometimes lack the required performance? In spite of all QC tests, the printer might fail to print successfully on your paper or the converter can not glue the box as expected. Performance is our target

4 The PocketGoniometer Concept Wetting and Absorption Continuous measurement of water uptake reveals the dynamic absorption while it happens Operator time reduced from minutes to seconds No operator bias No weighing of sample No blotting paper used No heavy couching roll This innovative instrument offers new opportunities to characterize the phenomenon of dynamic absorption as the water uptake is continuously monitored across a full 1OO cm2 area of sized paper or board as a function of time. The regular operator time of three minutes for a tedious 60 second Cobb test is now reduced to only a few seconds for loading of the specimen. The rest is done automatically/y by the instrument as no weighing or blotting of the specimen is required.

Established methods to determine the surface topography fail to provide relevant data as current methods are not carried out under the conditions occurring inside a printing nip. The PST simulates a range of different press types, nip loads and web speeds and eliminates the influence from a printing ink as no ink is being used.

This kind of data correlates to performance problems related to printing, coating and adhesion. With a wide range of feed systems for different samples and accessories to meet the most demanding applications. The DAT instruments have gained an important position in many laboratories around the world.

7 Fibre Rising Tester Newsprint Linting and Tissue Softness Adds moisture and heat to the test surface similar to an offset printing press Determines linting from long fibres standing out from surface Determines reduction in gloss from short fibre ends at surface Measures the tactile smoothness of tissue This is our very first instrument type presented in Over the years the instrument has had many new features added to it but it is still used worldwide for its original purpose: to determine the linting propensity of newsprint. It measures the influence from moisture and heat added to the surface to simulate the effects from web offset printing. In addition this instrument is successfully used to determine other properties related to the fibres extending from a surface such as the tactile smoothness felt when a tissue is rubbed against the skin.

8 Dimensional Stability Tester Static Shape and Dynamic Deformation Measures the in-plane hygro/hydroexpansion from moisture/water across a specimen area Measures static shape of a surface (cockling, curl, warp, fluting) Measures the dynamic deformation across a surface as a function of time and moisture content The DST1250 concept offers in-plane evaluation of dynamic hygroexpansion as water vapor is picked up by a paper specimen inside a cyclic climate chamber (10-90%RH). Out-of-plane features such us static shape (fluting, cockling) and dynamic deformation (curl, warp) are determined by the stereoscopic system DST1230. the moisture analyzer MCA1410 is a non-contacting technology to determine the moisture content in real time from reflected NIR light from a fibre optic cable.
