2 MT90 Microhardness Traverse Testing System Unrivaled Speed And Accuracy in Effective Case Depth and Other Traverse Testing Requirements The MT90 provides significant advantages In high volume applications. Traditionally, microhardness testing has been a painstaking test procedure that required precise measurements by skilled operators on highly prepared specimens. Many companies have upgraded to more automated versions of optical micro testers to improve productivity, but these systems often have variation in their test results due to varying levels of illumination, focus, and surface finish. In addition, these systems still use optical interpretation of the indentation dimensions. The MT90 system changes these fundamentals. The MT90 system uses a Rockwell-type depth-measurement test method to increase the productivity and accuracy of microhardness testing. The MT90 test cycle is so fast that it can be used for process control - not just quality control. Test reliability is improved since there is no interpretation in the impression measurement. Operators no longer need to maintain such a high skill level. Mounted test samples no longer need the same high level of preparation - or even mounting in some cases. Case-depth analysis has now become much easier. All traverse operations are controlled through menu selections. Advanced programming capabilities add to the advantages of the MT90. Newage has been adding new features to this software over the course of 15 years. Additionally, there has been a continuous process of refining the operation and improving the features over time to make the testing programs better suited for operators and management. (In fact, it is difficult, outside of a demonstration, to provide an accurate picture of the ease of use and depth of features in this program.) All MT90 software is written in-house by Newage. This is unusual in the industry and it offers significant advantages for users. Newage frequently tailors the program functions so they integrate into a company's operations. Since the programming is in-house, Newage also is able to provide a level of system support unmatched by most other companies. Finally, upgrades are available for new operating systems or new features. A direct-reading test method makes the MT90 a more reliable authority. The testing is performed with the direct-reading Rockwell method (see overleaf) using a micro load that is applied and measured automatically. The measurement is made at the same time as the indentation so there is no subjective operator interpretation of the test measurement. Different operators and facilities are able to obtain the same values so there are fewer problems between vendors and customers. In comparison to automated optical microhardness testers, the MT90 is much less dependent on surface conditions. There are no difficulties with dark spots or varying light levels on the sample that can easily mislead the optical interpretation of the actual impression edge. In fact, there doesn t need to be any contrast on a part tested by the MT90. The tester is often used to test etched parts or on surfaces prepared with 400 grit - much less finishing than optical testers require. Many users test samples without mounting and some users test parts right off the saw! Reduce Sample Preparation Since the MT90 does not use an optical test method, less surface preparation (to 400 grit) is needed to get good results. With Newage's unique self-leveling vise some samples don't need mounting - just clamp them into the vise. Statistical Analysis In addition to traverse reports, non-traverse data can be displayed in statistical formats comparing data within a set or between corresponding fields of different sets. Easy Traverse Setup Operators can easily setup complicated staggered traverse procedures with our graphic setup utility. A traverse will follow the same steps automatically. Image Capture Operators can save the screen image to a file. The test result value can be captured as well.

4 Sequential operator prompts during key operations guide users through various procedures such as creating a traverse specification file. Even inexperienced operators can work their way through a procedure as the screen prompts guide them. The MT90 is faster to use even before operators begin testing. The zoom lens makes rough positioning of a test sample much easier than with standard micros. Also, since it is just as easy to make a traverse following an odd angle as it is following the normal X or Y axis, there is no concern about precisely rotating the sample when positioning on the vise. Once the sample is in the vise there are three different methods of moving the test part for fine positioning at the traverse start point - MT90 users really appreciate the handling. 5 The MT90 Test Method: Test-Surface-Referencing Technology The MT90 system follows the Rockwell test principle to obtain test results and is calibrated using NIST-traceable Rockwell test blocks.. The Rockwell method employs a minor load (or preload) force to slightly indent the surface and establish a good reference position past irregular surface conditions. An additional test force is applied to reach the major (or full) load. This additional load is held for a period, then removed, leaving the minor load applied. At this stage the difference in depth of indentation is measured compared to the preload position. The measurement is converted to a Rockwell value. Individuals familiar with the Rockwell method are aware of factors that reduce the accuracy and repeatability of Rockwell test results, factors such as dimensional and test-force instabilities due to flexing of the tester's mechanical system under load and frictional effects. Exogenous conditions such as vibration in the environment and flexing of the test specimen under load can also have a profound effect. The MT90 has unique features that stabilize the measuring system in spite of conditions like deflection and vibration. Also, friction problems that affect the amount of applied load are prevented by a design that reduces frictional variation in load application. In fact, users have found that the MT90 test results are quantifiably better than those obtained in their test labs using traditional optical methods in high volume applications. Position at Preload Rockwell Type Method The MT90 uses a Rockwelltype test method and a light load to achieve fast and accurate Rockwell case-depth values even using unmounted specimens. Position at Full Load Position after Full Load Removed Traverse Reporting & System Management All the test results and descriptive information for a specific part is stored in the file which the user creates during a traverse setup. This enables discrete databases to be maintained for each different test part, even if it uses the same traverse definition as another part. Traverse definitions can be copied from one file to another with the program s file handling utility. The reports are not stored as such, but are instantly recreated as needed, based on the data in the file and the selected records. This method of storage enables operators to select multiple traverses for comparison from a single part or from many different parts by overlaying them on the same graph. Operators may also choose to perform a statistical analysis using the corresponding test result from different traverses and print the results. Other graphically rendered information includes tolerances that can be created for key individual tests in the traverse or a tolerance band for the entire traverse curve, or multiple Rockwell values for evaluating case depths. The MT90 data files are network capable so they can be stored on network drives. Users can select to export complete data files with descriptive information or export just the test results. The test result data consists of.csv files that can easily be parsed by other programs. There are many report options. This report shows the result of selecting multiple traverses overlaid on one graph for comparison purposes.
