1 Department of Exercise and Sport Science Minges Coliseum To: Graduate Curriculum Committee From: Kathy Davis, Option Director, Physical Education Teacher Education Date: June 19, 2008 Re: Change in prerequisite/corequisites for EXSS 6108, 6109 The Physical Education Pedagogy graduate faculty members have voted to approve a change in the prerequisites for EXSS 6108 and EXSS 6109 in the Physical Education Pedagogy Masters degree programs (MAEd, MS, and MAT). These courses have been included in a newly developed graduate certificate program - in response to the current North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) standards, and the current National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accreditation standards. On behalf of the Physical Education Pedagogy Graduate Faculty, I submit the following course revision in prerequisite/corequisites for EXSS 6108: Analysis of Teaching in Physical Education (3 hours) and EXSS 6109: Clinical Supervision in Physical Education: The prerequisite/corequisite statement will be changed from P/C: EXSS 6104 to P/C: EXSS 6104 or permission of the instructor. There will be no change in the degree hours needed to complete the Masters degrees. Rationale summary for each of these courses: The proposed graduate certificate program (12 hours) in Physical Education Clinical Supervision is primarily for practicing physical education teachers to prepare them to better supervise physical education interns. They may enter the certificate program as either degree-seeking or non-degree students. EXSS 6104 is not required in the certificate program because it is likely that practicing teachers will have already acquired most of the knowledge in that course through experience. A prerequisite/corequisite of "permission of the instructor" will allow those non-degree students (who will likely already have a Masters degree) to enroll in these two classes without becoming a degreeseeking student. Thesis Option a. Reduce the number of required courses which allows for the flexibility needed to have both Research Intensive and Applied Intensive programs in the Thesis option. b. Offer students the option to take an advisor approved 3 s.h. graduate level statistics course, not just BIOS c. Remove EXSS 6209 and 7212 (now 6212) as the thesis option does not need these. 2. Non-Thesis a. Add EXSS 6212 Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Diagnosis Procedures b. Reduce the number of elective hours to 15. Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Specifically the faculty wish to increase concentration flexibility by removing EXSS 6445 (Sport Psychology) and OMGT 6123 (Quantitative methods) as required courses and replace them with (advisor approved) electives in both the thesis and nonthesis options. As the result of a curriculum review by the graduate faculty of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science we request approval of a new concentration within the MS in Exercise and Sport Science. The Sport and Exercise Psychology concentration is designed to prepare students for jobs in industry (e.g., human factors), sport (e.g., coaching, athlete development), or health/fitness settings as well as the potential for doctoral study in sport and exercise psychology. The focus will be to provide relevant expertise for those who wish to work in applied settings and to develop the scientific background and skills necessary for doctoral training and research. This concentration will enhance the MS in Exercise and Sport Science and fulfill a need within the department by offering students the opportunity of focused study within behavioral science.. The current catalog description (page 233 of course catalog) would not change; however, the concentration listing would be edited to include the following thesis and non-thesis options for the Sport and Exercise Psychology Concentration (See pages ): Sport and Exercise Psychology: BIOS 7021; EXSS 6300, 6301, 6401, 6550, 6990, 6991, 7000 (6 s.h.); select 6 s.h. from the following EXSS 6202, 6440, 6445; 9 s.h. of general electives...36 s.h.
