Electrical and Electronic Engineering Assessment Report Fall 2007 Spring 2008 Option 1: Narrative Submission: please address the following questions. 1. What goals or learning objectives/outcomes were assessed in the AY ending June a. Oral Communication b. Written Communication c. All outcomes through faculty, student and alumni surveys d. Life-long learning e. Teamwork f. Ethics 2. How did you assess these learning outcomes? a. Oral communication was assessed through direct observation of student oral presentation skills during the senior project presentations. Rubric is given in file Rubric_Oral_Comm_2007.doc. b. Written communication was observed through direct evaluation of senior project reports. Rubric is given in file Writing_rubric_2007.xls c. Team-work rubric is given in file Team_Work_Rubric_2008.xls d. Faculty surveys are distributed, collected and analyzed. Surveys are given in files: Survey_Faculty_2007.doc, Faculty_Survey_Part_II_2007.doc, Faculty_Survey_Part_III_2007.doc, Faculty_Survey_Part_IV_2007.doc e. Student surveys are distributed, collected and analyzed. Surveys are given in files: Student_Survey_Part_I_2007.doc, Student_Survey_Part_II_2007.doc f. Exit interview has been conducted with about 50% of graduating seniors. Exit interview questions are given in Exit_Interview_2008.doc g. Ethics evaluation was conducted using an Incident at Morales video and subsequent written assignment and/or questions. The video has been commissioned by National Institute for Engineering Ethics and funded by NSF. Rubric developed is given in file Ethics_Survey_Interview_2008.doc h. Industrial visit to Sacramento Municipal Utility District has been conducted in May Survey questions are given in

Describe the measures you used and the information gathered? a. Oral communication was evaluated in December Analysis of data is shown in powerpoint presentation Oral_Presentation_Analysis.ppt. b. Student and faculty surveys have been administered in December Analysis of data is given: Student survey Student_Survey_Analysis_Part_I.doc (powerpoint Student_Survey.ppt). Faculty surveys are given in Faculty_Survey_Analysis_Part_I.doc (powerpoint Faculty_Survey_Part_I.ppt) and Faculty_Survey_Part_II.ppt (powerpoint Faculty_Survey_Part_II.ppt). c. Faculty have been surveyed on how well students understand the concepts in their classes and how well they know the concepts. The results of this analysis are given in file Faculty_Survey_Analysis_Parts_III_and_IV.doc. d. Written Communication was evaluated in March Analysis of written communication is given in file TWR_Teams.xls (powerpoint Technical_Writing.ppt. e. Ethic, life-long learning, teamwork was evaluated in May 2008 during seniors exit interview. Analysis of this data or report is not available. f. Industrial visit, analysis of this data is not available. 4. As a result of these assessments what did you learn about the program s success in helping its students achieve these learning outcomes? In what areas are students doing well and achieving expectations? What areas are seen as needing improvement within your program? a. Oral communications results show that the students are mostly well prepared to orally present technical information. Some concerns are in:

i. defining the structure of the presentation and Presents ideas & arguments persuasively, logically, & clearly. Solution is supported, ii. Identifies related and existing applications. Techniques used are clearly stated and presented in the context of existing applications and solutions. iii. Introduction, body, & conclusion are clearly delineated. Provides a a clear summary of project b. Written communications results show that students have good writing skills, except in the following areas: i. Identifying key design decision and alternatives are compared; reasoning shows depth of understanding. ii. Conclusion shows a deep understanding of subject area. c. For each course evaluated in faculty survey a high-risk area where students do not do well and concepts are very important is identified, see analysis above in 3c. The faculty will discuss these issues in August during the faculty retreat. 5. As a result of faculty reflection on these results, are there any program changes anticipated? If so, what are those changes? How will you know if these changes achieved the desired results? The following changes have been planned: o Four new elective courses have been offered in the area of biomedical engineering. o Two new curriculum patterns have been proposed to improve availability of electives and provide cohesive curriculum in communications and electronics areas. Curriculum committee has been tasked with evaluating the options during the summer. o Identify courses pre-senior project to introduce and develop oral presentation skills. This will be done next semester when we develop curriculum matrix. o Introduce a new class technical writing. Faculty member has been assigned to work on design of this class. o Team-work needs to be incorporated in the curriculum before senior project. Courses need to be identified to introduce and develop teamwork. Senior project has to have a more structured team-work approach. o Ethics has not been taught with sufficient depth in the curriculum. One suggestion was to require that the students take GE course on ethics or that college of engineering develops an Engineering Ethics course.

6. Did your department engage in any other assessment activities such as the development of rubrics, course alignment? a. Rubrics have been developed for i. Oral communications, Written communications, Ethics, Life long learning, Appreciation of different cultures, Team-work, Individual course objectives ii. Surveys have been updated for the Industrial visits iii. New questions have been developed for industrial visits iv. Matrix has been developed to relate industrial visit questions to Educational Objectives. Matrix is shown in file Matrix_Educational_Objectives_vs_Industrial_Questions.xls b. Assessment process has been refined i. New assessment matrix has been developed, that assigns specific SLO to be evaluated in selected courses. The matrix is given in file Performance_Criteria_to_Evaluate_SLO.xls ii. Course syllabi have been updated, and course objectives vs. student learning outcomes matrix has been developed for each course. See: 7. What assessment activities are planned for the upcoming academic year? a. During the department retreat in August the following assessment activities have been planned: i. Review analysis of survey data

ii. Review analysis for each course analyzed in faculty survey iii. Review of exit interview iv. Review of oral and written communication data v. Review exit interview data vi. Review industrial visit report. vii. Incorporate any changes in the curriculum. viii. Set the date and criteria to re-evaluate effects of changes that were made this year. ix. Finishing up development of Course Objective Rubrics x. Assessment plan for each course and department will be reviewed. xi. Planning on data collection during Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters. b. Development of curriculum matrix c. Development of 3-year assessment plan d. Development of Self-Study Report
