Matt Follett, a research scientist from the University of Quebec, Montreal, combines his knowledge with local consultants Scott Baker and Sean Dugan to present different situations where scientific research and advanced testing can help us make better decisions about tree management. This seminar includes both classroom and field components in a world-renowned location, TreeHouse Point. SCHEDULE COFFEE and NETWORKING Scott Baker, VTA and Tree Supported Structures Discussion of the process of evaluating trees involved in canopy tours, challenge courses, and tree house trees Sean Dugan, Oak Harbor Post Office Oak Lessons learned from the dissection of a 330 year old Garry Oak Matt Follett, The Motion Project A quantitative analysis of how crown thinning and crown reduction affects limb motion in tree canopies LUNCH PROVIDED Matt Follett, Utility Pruning Discussion of short term effects on growth rates following typical pruning practices Matt Follett, Scott Baker Outdoor sessions Haley Galbraith, Tool Table Discussion and hands-on experience with advanced tools such as the Tomograph, Resistograph, and Accelerometer CONCLUSION Matt Follett, N.P.D., RCA #460 M.Sc. 3 Practical Tree Science Seminar 2014 p.2 of 4 Speakers Matt Follett With nearly 20 years experience as a practicing arborist Matt Follett is a graduate of the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture, two time Atlantic Chapter TCC champion, and currently finishing up a Master s Degree in Urban Forestry at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Matt has taught practical arboriculture and tree climbing since 2001; worked in Southern Ontario, England, Seattle, Halifax and Montreal; and has presented on arboricultural topics at regional and international ISA conferences, research symposia, private training courses and garden exhibitions. He has been a Registered Consulting Arborist with ASCA (American Society of Consulting Arborists) and an ISA Certified Arborist. Scott Baker Principal and Founder of Tree Solutions Inc. Scott has worked with trees for over 30 years. He has extensive experience with construction, building codes, tree houses and zip lines. Scott utilizes his past experience as a successful developer to help bridge the gap between development and trees. He has extensive knowledge of tree biology and has partnered with several international scientists to help implement new tools and techniques in an effort to advance the use of science and technology in arboriculture. Scott is respected as a speaker and educator in tree diagnostics, tree preservation, and urban forestry issues. He is a Registered Consulting Arborist (#414), Board Certified Master Arborist (#PN-0670B), a Qualified Tree Risk Assessor, and a WSDA Licensed Commercial Pest Control Consultant (#79897). Sean Dugan Co-Principal of Tree Solutions Inc, Sean specializes in tree biology and diagnostics, pest control, and municipal tree ordinances. He has experience working as an expert witness in timber trespass cases and those requiring appraisals of landscapes. He has over 12 years experience in design and implementation of landscape plans, native plant restoration, and site inspection and evaluation. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental and Forest Biology with an emphasis in Wildlife Management, and a Masters in Forest Resources from the University of Washington. He is a Registered Consulting Arborist (#457), a Board Certified Master Arborist (PN-5459B), a Qualified Tree Risk Assessor, and is a Licensed Pesticide Applicator in the State of WA (#66733). Haley Galbraith Haley is a consulting arborist with Tree Solutions Inc. She holds a Bachelor s Degree from University of Washington in Environmental Science and Resource Management. She is a Certified Arborist (PN-7512A), Qualified Tree Risk Assessor, and a Licensed Pesticide Operator in the State of Washington.
4 Practical Tree Science Seminar 2014 p.3 of 4 Presentation Abstracts VTA and Tree Supported Structures Scott Baker Scott will present a version of his presentation from ISA Toronto 2013 on Tree Supported Structures. He will discuss methods of evaluating trees involved in canopy tours, challenge courses, and tree house trees. Great opportunities to observe the real thing will make this really fun. Oak Harbor Post Office Oak Sean Dugan Case Study: Lessons learned from 20 years of observations, advanced decay testing, risk analysis and mitigation of a 330 year old Garry Oak. Post mortem inspection allowed for comparison between external VTA signs/advanced decay testing results and observed internal structure. The Motion Project Matt Follett Arborists have long been prescribing pruning treatments to reduce the potential for limb or tree failure, yet little is known about the actual mechanical effects of these treatments. We have yet to develop quantitative effects of pruning on branch wind loading and motion in a typical urban environment. Six Silver maple (Acer saccharinum) trees were fitted with data logging accelerometers, activated by anemometers mounted on the subject limb. An initial control period was followed by one of two pruning treatments; either crown thinning or crown reduction. The data shows strong trends in a reduction of energy imparted on the limbs, but also a shift in the oscillation or sway frequency. Crown thinning showed a significant increase in sway frequency, suggesting less ability for the tree to dissipate forces through its structure. This suggests that crown reduction may be better suited to risk mitigation then crown thinning. Utility Pruning Matt Follett In the majority of urban and peri-urban regions, electrical utility line vegetation clearance is maintained by pruning encroaching trees. Estimating return time for vegetation management is an overarching concern for managers. Identifying key predictors of growth rates back into the utility corridor would assist in developing a predictive model for estimating return times. After identifying a suite of 12 variables that were easily and quickly measurable in the field, we used an innovative approach to safely measure growth rates into the utility corridor. Of the 12 potential predictors, 5 showed a significant relationship to growth when tested across all species. However at the species level only 2 were significant across all 3 species. Our results show that estimating return rates is a complex task, and further work is needed to develop a predictive model for more accurate estimation of return times. Ice Storm Matt Follett Ice storms impart a significant effect on the both the urban and natural forest ecosystems through much of North America and the world. The results of an innovative study utilising terrestrial LIDAR to capture a true 3D image of a tree as it is exposed to a simulated ice storm will be discussed. Outdoor session A: Scott Baker Practice VTA on trees with tree supported structures
5 Practical Tree Science Seminar 2014 p.4 of 4 Outdoor session B: Matt Follett Outdoor follow-up to the presentation The Motion Project Tool Table Haley Galbraith Discussion and hands-on experience with advanced tools such as the Tomograph, Resistograph, and Accelerometer. Attendees will have the opportunity to use these tools, as well as other tools commonly used in a consulting practice such as a Laser Rangefinder, soil probe, soil core sampler, etc. Tools will be available for 1 hour to use, until 4pm.
