1 UNB FREDERICTON SENATE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE , UNDERGRADUATE CALENDAR SUBMISSION SUMMARY FACULTY: Forestry and Environmental Management SUBMITTED: Oct 2012 PART A NEW COURSES A1 ENVS 5003 Environmental Management Tools 3 ch (3C) Resources: Presents students with a wide array of tools used to assess and manage activities that impact the environment. Tools considered may include environmental indicator measurement, environmental risk assessment, life cycle assessment, environmental management systems, sustainable forest management certification, and others. Presentations will be given by faculty members, students, and working professionals that demonstrate the use of these environmental management tools and identify issues associated with them. This course will provide essential tools used in the profession. It is intended as a core course in the BScENR program (Environmental Management Major), and will also serve as an elective for other students in the BScENR program and others. It will be offered jointly with ENVS 6003 (a required course for MEM students). Credit cannot be obtained for both ENVS 5003 and ENVS No new resources required. Course will be taught by current full time faculty member. A2 ENR 2425 Plants and Environment 3ch (3C 3L) Students learn to identify plants using keys and to recognize assorted plants of forests, fields, meadows, and wetlands. They learn the requirements for growth, development and persistence mechanisms of the assorted plants. They also learn to analyse vegetation in relation to site condition and to evaluate interrelationships among components of vegetation over time, including responses to perturbation or to interventions of various kinds. Prerequisite: a basic university course in Biology (e.g. BIOL 1001) or Botany. Note: This course parallels FOR 2425 for the first 8 weeks of term and is completed at the end of the 8 th week. Thus it is assigned fewer credits than FOR This course provides BScENR students with foundational knowledge about vegetation, its dynamics, and its role in environmental processes. It is intended as a core course in the BScENR program. 1 of 7

2 Resources: No new resources required. Course will be taught by current full time faculty member who teaches FOR2425. PART B CHANGES: COURSE NUMBER, TITLE, CREDIT HOUR, DESCRIPTION OR PREREQUISITE B1 ENVS 6003 Seminar: Current Issues in Environmental Management 3 ch (3C) New Title: Current New Course Title and Description Environmental Management Tools This course brings together students who are studying in the area of environmental and resource management to provide a forum for the discussion of interdisciplinary issues in related disciplines. There are two specific objectives in the seminar: 1) To bring environmental and resource managers to the classroom and expose students to a broad spectrum of areas of study in the discipline. 2) To provide a forum through which students may hone their formal presentation skills and provide a rigorous analysis of a particular issue. Presents students with a wide array of tools used to assess and manage activities that impact the environment. This new title and description better reflect course content. This course will provide essential tools used in the profession. It is a required course for MEM students. B2 FOR 4020 Management Practicum 8 ch (1C 3L) Current Course Description Practical exercise in forest landscape management, designed to provide an opportunity to integrate skills and knowledge gained throughout the program. Forest Ecosystem Management and Forest Engineering students will work on the same project to design landscape management plans at the strategic, tactical and operational levels. The practicum will be based on real forests. Through consultation with clients and/or members of the public, goals will be developed. Plans will be 2 of 7

3 New derived to integrate these goals. Teams will be responsible for project management, including planning, budgeting and report preparation. Practical exercise in forest landscape management, designed to provide an opportunity to integrate skills and knowledge gained throughout the program. Working with a client and/or the public, students will develop goals and objectives, design and gather inventory data (if required ), then develop an integrated landscape management plan at the strategic, tactical and operational levels. Learning modules will be provided specific to the needs of the project. Additional topics include project management, conflict resolution, professional practice and forestry associations. The project requires completion of a group report and presentation. Prerequisites: FOR 2281, FOR 3005, FOR 3006, FOR Corequisite: FOR 4096 This new description better reflect course content required for the BScF degree program. B3 FOR 2425 Autecology of Forest Vegetation 4ch (3C 3L) Increase in credit hours from 4 to 5 This course combines elements of former courses on ground vegetation, shrubs, and dendrology and silvics that all used to be delivered as separate courses. In addition, elements of ecophysiology have been blended into the course. Student workload is substantial and includes preparing and submitting plant collections and memorizing botanical terminology, Latin names, the key autecological characteristics of many ground vegetation and shrubs, as well as detailed knowledge of silvics of commercial Canadian trees. The course fulfills most of accreditation requirements in the areas of forest botany, autecology, and silvics. B4 FOR 2505 Soils for Plant Growth 3ch (2C 3L) Increase in credit hours from 3 to 4 This change reflects the need to recognize the workload of this course: 1 preparatory laboratory session, 5 field excursions, 1 three hour out door midterm, 4 indoor laboratory reports, 3 quizzes, 1 three hour final examination; two field guides (soils, vegetation), one textbook, and instructor student exercise communications via web site. Lectures and laboratory sessions (indoor / outdoor) are fully integrated. Tutorials are also available, on request. B5 FOR 2113 Introduction to Forest Wildlife Ecology 3ch (3C) Course description 3 of 7

4 Current Introduces an ecological approach to considering impacts of engineering structures on forest ecosystems and the major groups of wildlife inhabiting forests. Emphasizes interdependence of forest organisms and the terrestrial and aquatic components of their environment, especially in the context of industrial forestry. New Introduces an ecological approach to understanding the relationship between forest ecosystem condition and the major groups of wildlife inhabiting forests, including species at risk. Emphasizes interdependence of forest organisms and the terrestrial and aquatic components of their environment, especially in the context of natural and anthropogenic stressors. Covers identification and habitat requirements of selected wildlife species, and applicable legislation. Better reflects the content of the course. B6 FE 1611 Engineered Systems in Natural Resources 3ch(2C/2L) Course number New Number: ENR 1611 Forest engineering degree is no longer offered and most students enrolled in this class are in the ENR degree program. B7 FE 2703 Forest Operations 3ch(2C/3L) Course number New Number: FOR 2703 Forest engineering degree is no longer offered and most students enrolled in this class are in the forestry degree program. 4 of 7
