Population Dynamics City of Fort Wayne Ash Tree Population Ash Tree Population Ash Population 2009 Ash Population Ash Tree Population Ash Population
Fort Wayne s Statistics Ash trees are planted throughout the entire city. Some neighborhoods are monoculture of ash trees. As of December 8, 2010, ash trees make up 22% of our Street Tree population or 12,000 ash trees.
Priority Neighborhoods
Covington Reserve Statistics 206 street trees/114 are Ash 55% of street trees are Ash Pruning section street trees/156 Ash trees in section 314 has 13.5% Ash Covington Reserve holds 73% of the ash trees in the section

Projections Tree Mortality Rate Other Trees Ash Trees
Components of Plan Development 1. Street Tree Inventory 2. Funding/Budget 3. Treatment Choice 4. Politics/Support 5. Writing Specification 6. Public Awareness 7. Disposal of debris 8. Risk management 9. Re evaluate
Street Tree Inventory Street Tree Inventory since 1992 Delineates size of Ash population Supplies supporting data for city council Indicates the health of each tree Helps choose which trees to treat Create tree list for contractor/in house accurate DBH for treatments Helps with follow up reports SUSI Project
Funding/Budget Is there funding? Private funding or municipal budget Strings attached? Treatment only funding Duration of Funding Utilize multiple avenuescollege marketing class, neighborhood associations, not for profits
Treatment Choice Research the options!!! Talk to people with EAB experience Community and infrastructure needs Treatment vs. Cut and Replace?
In-House/Contractor Amount of Funding Adequate funding was available Staffing level Did not have sufficient staff Forestry Division has 4 full time and 4 seasonal employees. Maintain i current pruning cycle and removals Ice Storm!- Major contributing factor
Politics/Support Know your council Prove the trees are assets. Green benefits Be prepared know the facts. Environmental issues
Specifications Standard boiler plate Be specific. products, p flow meter, certain product or equivalent! Environmental laws and pesticide laws A certified Arborist and chemical applicator license required. Hours of operation Price per DBH inch Flexibility
Public Awareness Usethe local media Neighborhood or quad meetings Inform the public(the 5 w s). Print flyers or door knockers
Debris Disposal Two main sites for disposal of chips There was one main site for wood disposal Partnership with company for log buying Some companies would grind for free and take half of chips
Possible Solutions Don t do anything Ash trees will die. We remove them at that time. Remove all ash trees and replace with other species (diverse culture) Treat all ash trees Or a COMBINATION OF ALL OF THE ABOVE
~ Remove and Replace ~ Initially, it s the most costly proposal Removals of various size trees and planting with smaller 2 diameter trees that are 8 10 feet tall Peace of mind that EAB will not affect future trees
~ Combination Plan ~ Evaluate all of the ash trees Determine if specimen is worth saving If not, remove it when it dies Remove and replace those trees that are small with other species Maintaining the city tree canopy Treating those larger ash trees that are in good health and those in neighborhoods of monoculture
Methods Utilized Soil injected with Imidicloprid Some trunk injections We are now treating 10% of the population which is 1230 trees. Since 2008 we have had a 6% failure rate. Removal and replacement of smaller ash trees first. Introduction ti of Spathius agrili
Parisatoid~ Spathius agrili Native to China was found parasitizing up to 90 percent of EAB larvae in ash trees in China Female lays up to 20 eggs on larvae The cycle is repeated 3-4 times each summer and fall.
2010 EAB Plan Working with Purdue University- and INDNR Re-organized to allow for a more diverse plan. Only treating 10% of Ash population or 1230 trees Remove and replaced 410 trees in each in 2010
2011 Projections In a typical year about 500 city trees die and are removed We are projecting to loose an additional 3,000 Ash Trees in 2011 What does that mean? 3,500 trees need to be removed in 2011 FWPRD staff can remove approx. 1,500 trees/year 2,000 additional trees will need to be contracted out for removal
