3 Go SOLAR Florida Receives Department of Energy Award to Increase Use of Solar Energy The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded the Go SOLAR Florida team a $1.6 million SunShot Initiative Rooftop Solar Challenge II competitive award to make it easier for Floridians to obtain grid-tied solar installations. Go SOLAR Florida is one of 8 recipients of a Rooftop Solar Challenge II award nationwide. The purpose of the award is to improve the affordability of solar and increase the use of and access to solar energy among the state s residents and businesses by reducing market barriers, lowering non-hardware related installation costs, and increasing access to financing options. The Go SOLAR Florida team will: Improve and streamline the solar permitting process by standardizing application forms, fee tables and inspection requirements thus expediting issuance and reducing soft costs Create an online application that produces code compliant precertified electrical and structural plans for rooftop photovoltaic (PV) installations, lowering plan development costs Enhance availability of statewide solar financing options Advance best practice standardized solar friendly zoning regulations Promote solar and solar rights demonstrating the importance of clean energy and the related job creation Model the benefits of intergovernmental cooperation, working toward a critical mass of solar activity Aggressively market solar energy and solar installations across the state of Florida For more detailed information on these initiatives, visit: GoSolarFlorida.org Go SOLAR Florida is a partnership of Florida counties, including Alachua, Broward, Miami Dade and Orange, cities, and the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) representing approximately 4 million Floridians. Key Benefits: Lower costs associated with plan development Rapid process from design to permitting Reliable system for code compliant drawings Standardized format for ease of use in the field Streamlined and consistent training Centralized solar component and plans website for all of Florida: GoSolarFlorida.org Code Compliance: One key to the success of this system is the generation of plans that can be accepted with confidence by building officials. The design process is based on calculation algorithms developed from the applicable electrical and structural codes, industry standards, and current research. These algorithms will be reviewed by design professionals, tested, and refined to ensure outcome is code compliant and all required calculations and documentation will be included. The system will be continuously maintained by engineers with input from code officials to accommodate code changes and other updates. Go SOLAR Fest s I, II and III: Promoting and Teaching the Benefits of Solar Energy: The first two Fest s have each brought together over 2,000 attendees and over 120 exhibitors to share and learn about the solar industry in Florida. Go SOLAR Fest III promises to do the same while spotlighting exhibitors, and the Go Solar Florida online permitting system for rooftop photovoltaic (PV), including an online application to produce electrical and structural plans. Spotlight #1: During the Fest, exhibitors will be giving brief company presentations on the Exhibit to Go SOLAR Fest stage, for more information and a presentation schedule see page 4. Spotlight #2: During the Fest, the Go SOLAR Florida Permitting/ Electrical and Structural Plans System will be demonstrated, for more information stop by the Go SOLAR Florida or FSEC booth or attend a demonstration being given on Friday from 12:30-1:00 in room 113. 7 Training and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) The Third Annual Go SOLAR Renewable Energy Fest organizers are offering training and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) at our event. Five different sessions are being offered for FREE. Three of them will provide CEUs. Attendance for these courses is free, but all attendees must register by completing the forms available at the Information Desk. 1. Florida Residential Energy Code Compliance Methods, Tools and Verification will be held on Friday, October 9 from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm in Hall B, Room 113. This class will provide 4 CEUs to any of these Professional Boards: Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) Building Code Administrators and Inspectors (BCAI) Board of Landscape Architects (BOLA) Electrical Contractors Licensing Board (ELCB) Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) 2. LEED V4: A Comparison of Changes will be held on Friday, October 9 from 10:00 am until noon in Hall B, Room 114. This class will provide 2 CEUs for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) professionals LEED Projects: Lessons Learned will be held on Friday, October 9 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm in Hall B, Room 114. This class will provide 2 CEUs for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) professionals. Attendance is free and walk-ins are encouraged. No forms required for the two classes below. 4. A fourth class, Solar Rights, will also be offered on Saturday, October 10 from 11:00 am until noon in Hall B, Room 114. This workshop is designed to educate Residents, Building Officials, Contractors, and Community Association Managers about solar access and their legal right to install rooftop solar systems. 5. A fifth option, an Overview and Demonstration of the Solar Plans Designer, will be offered on Friday, October 9 from 12:30 until 1 pm by Stephen Barkaszi from the Florida Solar Energy Center in Hall B, Room 113. The Solar Plans Designer is a new way to issue solar PV permits in the state of Florida. This project is a key deliverable of the Go SOLAR Florida grant project which is funded by the US Department of Energy to reduce soft costs of solar permitting. While not complete, considerable progress has been made to automate, standardize and centralize the creation of preapproved electrical and structural designs which can then be submitted to the appropriate jurisdictions for permitting.
