Many of the characteristics of the entrepreneurial firm, including the way they manage their employees, are unique and depart from conventional organizational and managerial models. Despite the central role played by employees in these firms, entrepreneurial firms tend to be less sophisticated in their deployment of human resource practices and systems. Nevertheless, many of the issues governed by a human resource system, such as recruitment and retention, are of crucial significance for these organizations and need to be addressed. Furthermore, as entrepreneurial firms grow and become more established, they are faced with the need to institutionalize a human resource function and eventually a system. Interestingly, despite the centrality of human capital management in entrepreneurial firms, throughout their life cycle, this area has received relatively little attention in theory or in practice. This course will apply strategic human resource management principles and practices to entrepreneurial firms throughout their various developmental stages. Employing class lectures, case analysis, and guest speakers, the course will provide students with a foundation in strategic human resource management, entrepreneurship, and the intersect between these two areas of study. The course will also provide students with an understanding of human resource considerations and needs in entrepreneurial firms. In doing so, the course will illustrate the important strategic role of human resource management and its potential contribution to the sustainability and competitive advantage of these dynamic and important organizations. 1

Heneman (Eds), Human Resource Strategies for the High Growth Entrepreneurial Firm (Greenwich, Connecticut: Information Age Publishing, 2006). 2. Articles and chapters assigned bellow will be available in a course packet sold at the University bookstore. Code of Academic Integrity The University of Illinois Academic Integrity-All Students policy in the Code of Policies and Regulations Applying to all Students applies to this course and will be strictly enforced. Adhering to the highest academic integrity standards is expected from all students in this course. Violations of academic integrity will result in appropriate penalties. Requirements 1. In addition to the required reading assignments, there will be a midterm examination, a final examination, and a group project. Final grades will be determined on the basis of the following weights: Midterm examination Group project Participation Final Exam 30 points 25 points 15 points 30 points 2. Participation. Students will receive a participation score for each class. Each class is worth 1 participation point. Half of the participation points will be allotted for attendance and half of the participation points will be allotted for in class discussions and preparation. The instructor will assess student preparation using quizzes and in-class questions and discussions. Students who arrive late to class will lose half of their class participation points. 3. Group project. Each student will also participate in a group project involving the development of an entrepreneurial human resource management initiative. Group projects will be presented on the last day of class and will represent 25% of the final grade. Details regarding this project as well as the specific assignment instructions will be handed out in class. 2

3 Course Grades 1. Calculation of course grades will be based on the following distribution: Grade Points A A A B B B C C ) Final grades will be based on each student s total points in the class. Grades will NOT be based on a curve. 3) Class participation can raise the final grade by up to half a grade at the discretion of the instructor. Details of these requirements and grading procedures will be discussed in class. Laptop and cell phone policy The use of laptops and cell phones in class is not allowed. Students who us a cell phone or other electronic devices during class will lose half of their class participation points. 3
