ESE:O is dedicated to achieving social justice and strengthening civil society in countries on the path to democratic consolidation through democratic literacy : a series of skills involving linguistic literacy (reading, writing, information seeking, interpretation and evaluation), critical thinking, democratic culture and information technologies. ESE:O aims at strengthening democratic culture in key areas of society that can work as leverages for democratic change: marginalized groups, academia, education, the police, social leaders and the judiciary. Vision and Mission Vision and Mission At ESE:O we strongly believe that capacity building in writing, associability, accountability, critical thinking and technology can be a powerful instrument for democratic consolidation. ESE:O seeks to facilitate the encounter between local and global knowledge. We also believe that, in order to be effective, change must originate from within the communities: building voices from the South. ESE:O envisions written culture as playing a key role in the development of democracy and the respect for human rights. Without written culture there is no accountability; without solidarity there is no community. Our experience has taught us that the use of new technologies in creative and innovative ways can be a powerful catalyst for social change and measurable and sustainable impact. Our mission is to build capacity in democratic literacy through the development of new methodologies that can be replicated in diverse communities: minority social leaders, teachers, sexual and human rights activists, academics, indigenous women poets, poor rural communities, student leaders, survivors of human rights violations (and their families), and women leaders. This project followed the guidelines of the international PISA exam, promoted by the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD). SEP/Government of Mexico - PISA Evaluation - Teacher/Student Manuals ESE:O designed students/teachers manuals (2,200,000 printed), web-portal and CD-Room (2,200,000 printed). ESE:O provided strategic consulting to the team of the Secretary of Public Education in the design of the communication campaign for the PISA SEGOB/Government of Mexico - Systemization and Writing Workshop for the National Survey of Political Culture This ESE:O writing workshop was developed in the context of the ENCUP Summer Course: Introduction to quantitative analysis in social sciences. The course s main topic of analysis was the National Survey on Political Culture and Good Citizenship 2009, from the Secretary of the Interior. The Secretary presented a statistical analysis of civic-political values, practices and interests of Mexicans, such as the perception of the political system. ww.encup.gob.mx Memoria Quiché Project The main goal of this project is the development of a methodology for a writing project that will validate in the academic world the experiences and achievements of an individual Guatemalan activist, Luz Méndez, and provide input to the development of public policies based on her experiences and ethnographic work. The secondary objective is to produce two article (in English and Spanish) on her experiences that complies with international standards for publication in indexed academic journals. The project also aims to systematize the methodology for the production of academic articles rooted in experience-based knowledge for policy-making. Secretary of Government (SEGOB), Mexico - Unit of Political Development - Women and Power in Mexico: Public Sector, Private Initiative and Civil Society The aim of this project is to share information about the access of women to (and impact in) decision-making positions in the public and private sectors, and in civil society organizations. It provided an opportunity for information exchange about best practices and for the discussion of strategies for promoting a more significant presence of women in leadership positions.
