2 Barbaranne Benjamin, PhD, CCC, SLP Executive Associate Dean Barbaranne Benjamin is a and Executive Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. She has been at the University of Toledo since 1986 and developed the graduate program in speech-language pathology. Her current research interests include communication disorders in the geriatric population as well as women s issues in criminal and social justice. She has authored over 50 scholarly publications, obtained over 20 grants totaling 1.5 million dollars, and presented in Belgium, England, Japan, New Zealand and Russia. Terry Cluse-Tolar, PhD, MSW Dr. Cluse-Tolar serves as the MSW Program Director in the Social Work Program. Her practice experience includes 14 years working in child welfare, hospital emergency rooms, and as an agency director for an agency serving the visually impaired. Her research interests include women and children in poverty, crisis intervention, adoption, and marginalized populations. She serves on the Steering Committee for the Ohio Empowerment Coalition. Wendy Cochrane, PhD Dr. Cochrane serves as Director of the School Psychology Program and has been a faculty member since She received her BS in Elementary Education from Miami University, her MA in School Psychology from The Ohio State University, and her EdS and PhD degrees in School Psychology from the University of South Florida. She has worked as teacher, school psychologist and on two state of Florida department of education grants. Her areas of research interest include treatment integrity in schoolbased interventions, supervision in school psychology, school-wide behavior interventions,, and resiliency in childhood, and school-wide system and organizational change. Debra Gentry, PhD Dr. Gentry teaches master and doctoral students in Higher Education in courses such as Student Development Theory, Organization and Management of Student Affairs, Masters Capstone Seminar, Critical Issues in Higher Education, and Curriculum in Higher Education. Dr. Gentry s areas of research interest include teaching and learning in postsecondary education, college student development, and the development of wellbeing in particular. Wendi Goodlin-Fahncke, PhD The Fall 2013 semester will be Dr. Goodlin-Fahncke s fourth year of teaching at UT. She teaches Criminal Justice Theory, Advanced Criminal Justice Theory, Sex Crimes, and Criminal Justice Research Methods. Her research interests include the sexual exploitation of women, men seeking men for sexual encounters, intimate partner violence, family violence, deviant behavior, inmate health and well-being, and inmate gang participation. 3 Thomas Gutteridge, PhD Interim Dean College of Social Justice and Human Service Dr. Gutteridge s teaching and research interests are in the areas of career development, human resources management, and labor/industrial relations. In particular, Dr. Gutteridge has co-authored a book entitled Organizational Career Development: Benchmarks for Building a World-Class Workforce (Jossey-Bass in cooperation with ASTD), a monograph entitled Career Planning Practices for AMACOM, contributed to the American Society of Training and Development monograph entitled A Guide for Career Development Inquiry, and is co-author of an ASTD book entitled Organizational Career Development: State of the Practice. Dr. Gutteridge has also authored a number of publications regarding the labor market characteristics and career patterns of college graduates and displaced technical professionals, as well as articles on organizational human resource planning and career development practices. These articles have appeared in such journals as Academy of Management Journal, California Management Review, Human Resource Planning Journal, and Industrial and Labor Relations Review. Dr. Gutteridge has been a consultant in the career development and human resource planning field, as well as a labor arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. He has also served as a member of the New York Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) and the Connecticut State Labor Board. Janet Hoy, PhD, MSSA, LISW-S Dr. Hoy s areas of research expertise include mental health recovery and serious mental illness, benefits of human-animal interaction (HAI), and qualitative methods. She has a particular interest using qualitative methods to inform intervention and implementation research; a book she recently co-authored through Oxford University Press, Qualitative Methods for Practice Research, details such. She is also proficient in the use of Atlas.ti qualitative software. Mylo Jennings, PhD Dr. Mylo Jennings is an of Social Work at the University of Toledo. He is a Licensed Independent Social Worker Supervisor (LISW-S) and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC III). His clinical and administrative social work and chemical dependency practice experience spans more than 30 years. He has both graduate and undergraduate teaching experience having taught at the University of Toledo as well as The Ohio State University at Mansfield, Marion, Lima, and Newark campuses and at Tiffin University. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Blue Mountain Community College in 1984, a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at Western Oregon State College in 1986 and a and Master of Science in Clinical Child and Youth Work in He earned his Master of Social Work and Ph.D. in social work from The Ohio State University in 1997 and, 1999, respectively. His current research interests include ethics, especially clinical practice ethics and working with vulnerable populations, especially families in crisis. Page 3

4 Shanhe Jiang, PhD Dr. Jiang is a and Chairperson in the Department of Criminal Justice, Social Work and Legal Specialties. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the State University of New York at Albany. He has published more than 60 journal articles and 19 books or book chapters. His major teaching and research interests include methodology, corrections, comparative criminal justice and criminology, and human relations. He is currently working on several research projects on international views of crime and criminal justice, formal and informal control, corrections, and joint modeling (for correlated, continuous and categorical dependent variables). Richard Johnson, PhD Dr. Johnson teaches courses in general criminal justice, policing, and research methods/ statistics. His has conducted extensive research in the areas of domestic violence, police management, and police-citizen social psychology. Before becoming an academic, Dr. Johnson served as a probation officer in Illinois, and as a police officer (patrol and detective) in Indiana and Illinois. Barbara Kopp Miller, PhD Executive Associate Dean Research & Quality, Academy of Professional Development Dr. Kopp Miller is a, Administrative Director of the Center for Successful Aging at UT and Executive Associate Dean for Research and Quality in the College of Health Sciences and the College of Social Justice and Human Service. Educated as a social psychologist and gerontologist, Dr. Kopp Miller's primary research areas include: sexuality, grief and bereavement, and survey instrument development. John Laux, PhD, PCC-s, LICDC Dr. Laux s areas of clinical and research interest include dual-diagnosis, personality disorders, and personality assessment. He has clinical experience in a variety of treatment settings including the Cincinnati VAMC, a community mental health center, a campus counseling center, and an inpatient chemical dependence treatment center. David Meabon, PhD Dr. Meabon serves as chair and peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission, a consultant for student affairs programs, enrollment management, financing and student activity fees, housing for colleges and universities, institutional strategic planning, and professional staff development. His main research interests include the financing of higher education, student fees, and the history of higher education. Page 4

5 Aravindhan Natarajan, PhD Dr. Natarajan has taught across the curriculum in both the BSW and MSW levels. His teaching interests are human behavior and the social environment, oppression and social justice, social work practice, community mental health, social research methods, psychopathology and mental health, medical and psychiatric social work, substance abuse treatment, family therapy and child welfare. He won the John A. Yankey award for outstanding teaching at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio. His research interests are in the areas of mental health and substance abuse treatment. He studied alcohol consumption and related problems among sanitary workers in Chennai (Madras), India, and group processes in groups for alcohol dependents at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) for his M.Phil. dissertation. His doctoral work involved studying stages of change and mandated substance abuse treatment under the criminal justice system. As a psychiatric social worker he has practiced family systems therapy, cognitive-behavior therapy and group therapy. He has worked with clients diagnosed with substance abuse, depression, schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorder. Recently, he has begun exploring the use of the Arts in social work practice and research. In social work practice, the Arts can be cathartic for clients and can facilitate better client-worker interaction. The Arts can also play a great role in research by facilitating knowledge building and then disseminating that information to the public. Ronald Opp, PhD Ron Opp is serving as the director of the Internationalization Research Group, a group of faculty involved in developing a national Community College Student Internationalization Survey, in partnership with the Community Colleges for International Development. In addition to this student survey, he has surveyed presidents, provosts, and chief student affairs officers in community colleges nationally about their involvement in internationalizing the community college student experience. Sudershan Pasupuleti, PhD Dr. Pasupuleti has nearly two decades of experience in teaching, research, practice, and consulting in working with large systems (communities and organizations), which includes nearly 10 years of administrative experience in leading the UT Office of Service Learning and Community Engagement and the Development Action & Research Center in India. He was the brain behind a multi-million dollar project of the Center for World Solidarity, which has been highly successful by revitalizing several thousands of local self-government institutions in rural communities. He is a highly engaged scholar in the local Toledo community since He has extensively taught at both undergraduate and graduate programs at different schools of social work in the United States and in India. Dr. Pasupuleti is a recent recipient of Hartford Faculty Scholar Award (in the cohort IX) from the Gerontological Society of America, an initiative funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation. His current research interests include large systems, age-friendly community, technology use by older adults, cognitive aging and brain plasticity, and advocacy for services for older and at-risk populations, and crosscultural and social justice. Dr. Pasupuleti has 25 peer-reviewed journal articles/book chapters and a book to his credit, in addition to 25 professional presentations at national and international conferences. Page 5

6 Nick Piazza, PhD, PCC Dr. Piazza is a licensed professional clinical counselor with supervisory endorsement (PCC -S), licensed psychologist, and. Dr. Piazza has worked in the mental health and substance abuse fields since 1975, and holds national certification as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor and as a Master Addictions Counselor through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). Before entering academia in 1984, Dr. Piazza was the Administrator of the Jacksonville Area Council on Alcoholism (JACOA), a regional comprehensive addiction inpatient and outpatient treatment hospital in central Illinois. Dr. Piazza is nationally recognized as a lecturer on psychopharmacology, and is on the medical staffs of two local hospitals. He has numerous publications and has presented frequently at both the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association annual conventions. Dr. Piazza formerly served on the editorial boards of Counseling and Values and the Journal of Mental Health Counseling, and is currently on the editorial board of Essential Psychopharmacology. Dr. Piazza is a past President of the Northwest Ohio Counseling Association, the Ohio Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (OACES), and the University of Toledo Graduate Council. Dr. Piazza received the 2010 Outstanding Counselor Educator Award from the Ohio Association for Counselor Education, the 2011 Outstanding Mentor Award from the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the 2012 Research Award from the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. His research interests include substance abuse and dependence, and professional ethics and standards of care. Michael Prior, PhD, MSSW, BA Dr. Prior is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Council on Social Work Education, and the Society for Spirituality and Social Work. Dr. Prior has over sixteen years of direct practice and administrative experience in the mental health field. His main area of practice has been with adolescents and families, especially those with chemical dependency issues. His areas of study and personal interest center on spirituality, treatment of the effects of child abuse, and fighting racial inequality. Kathleen Reed, JD Kathleen Mercer Reed, Esq. is a graduate of The University of Toledo, holding a Bachelor's of Science, and an Associate Degree in Legal Assisting. She received her Juris Doctor from the University of Toledo College of Law in May of 1993, and a member of the State Bar of Ohio. Her legal experience includes employment with Hallett & Hallett Law Offices of Wauseon, Ohio; with The Honorable Richard L. Speer, United States Bankruptcy Judge in Toledo, Ohio; and with the law firm of Nathan & Roberts in Toledo, Ohio. Since 1987, she has taught in such areas as Legal Research, Torts, Civil Procedure, Introduction to Law, and Law Office Management. She has also written and published two textbooks within the last two years: one in Contract Law and one on Business Organizations. Page 6

7 Jennifer Reynolds, PhD Dr. Reynolds is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, who received two Bachelor s degrees from Michigan State University, and Master s and Doctoral degrees in School Psychology from Central Michigan University. She practiced as a school psychologist and has worked with children with disabilities in a number of settings (public schools, universities, and multidisciplinary clinics) at the elementary, middle, and high school level, as well as with undergraduate and graduate students. Her current research interests include academic and behavioral interventions at the individual and systems level, intervention efficiency, and comparison of specific learning disability eligibility models. Christopher Roseman, PhD Dr. Roseman is an in the Counselor Education Program at The University of Toledo. He is licensed as a Professional Counselor in Ohio, a Nationally Certified Counselor, and an instructor in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention for the Crisis Prevention Institute. Over seven years as an educator, Dr. Roseman has authored and refereed articles and book chapters in the areas of substance abuse, sexual offending/ victimization, and empathic accuracy. He has served in varied leadership positions within state, regional, and national professional organizations and received the American Counseling Association s Robert Rencken Emerging Professional Leader Award in Kathleen Salyers, PhD, PCC Dr. Salyers received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Ohio University. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), Licensed Social Worker (LSW), and Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor III-E (with supervisory endorsement) (CCDC III-E). Her areas of research interest include chemical dependency, addiction as a family disease, behavioral change, spirituality in counseling, and salutogenesis/wellness. Dr. Salyers has worked in the social service/mental health/ chemical dependency fields since She has a varied background that includes working as a Behavioral Specialist with MRDD, Crisis Counselor with the homeless, Case manager for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Special Needs Coordinator with Headstart, and Chemical Dependency counselor/supervisor in outpatient and residential treatment settings. John Schlageter, JD Associate Lecturer John J. Schlageter, III, Esq., is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati (BA) and the University of Toledo, College of Law (JD). After earning his degree in law, he was admitted to the Ohio and Michigan Bars, as well as the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio and the United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan. He has been a partner in local law firms and his main areas of practice have included corporate, estate planning, personal injury, litigation, employment, and domestic relations law. He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Michigan State Bar Association and the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association. He began teaching in UT s Paralegal Studies Program in 1998 and has also served as a coach for the University of Toledo Mock Trial Team. He is currently the Program Director for the Legal Specialties Program. He is also an authorized Mediator of the International Academy of Dispute Resolution. Along with s Henry Cheeseman and Kathleen Reed, he has co-authored two textbooks entitled Business Organizations for Paralegals and Contract Law for Paralegals. Page 7

8 Heather Sloane, MSW Associate Lecturer Ms. Sloane teaches field classes that help students integrate what they learn in the classroom with what they are learning in their internships. She has worked mostly with the MSW program working with foundation and advanced students. Her research attempts to bring together social work and cultural studies. She investigates the culture of professional education. For her dissertation she will be looking at the relationship between medical education and poverty in the U. S. Snejana Slantcheva-Durst, PhD Dr. Snejana Slantcheva-Durst serves as the program coordinator for the master s program in Higher Education and teaches master s and doctoral students in Higher Education. She brings administrative and research expertise developed over six years of work as a university administrator and four years as a director of a national policy research center. Her research interests include comparative higher education policy analysis, leadership and governance of institutions of higher education, and short-cycle higher education. Michael Spiros, JD Michael J. Spiros, Esq., is a graduate of The University of Toledo (B.B.A., 1969, J.D., 1972). He has been involved as a private practitioner with the law firm of Spiros and Stewart of Lambertville, Michigan for 22 years. His firm is a general private practice of law with an emphasis on probate and real estate cases. Since 1982, he has taught courses such as Introduction to Legal Assisting, Advanced Legal Research, Introduction to Law and Family Law. Spiros has overseen the installation of a computer network in his own practice, developed a case management software package and conducted several seminars dealing with pre-packaged law office software. Kasey Tucker-Gail, PhD Dr. Kasey A. Tucker-Gail is an in the Department of Criminal Justice, Social Work & Legal Speacialties. She earned her Ph.D. in sociology from Western Michigan University (2004) with emphasis on criminology (law enforcement & white collar crime) and applied research methodology. She also has a cognate concentration in public administration (focusing on policy analysis & evaluation methodology). Her academic pursuits focus on law enforcement issues, particularly law enforcement officer death and training. Specifically, she has/is working on research projects looking evaluations of several law enforcement training practices, exploring law enforcement officer deaths both at the structural and situational levels, and crime mapping and COMPSTAT program effectiveness in law enforcement agencies, investigative processes with regards to child sexual abuse and child advocacy. She is also involved in several School of Psychology & Counselor Education dissertations, research projects and publications. Further, her teaching interests are in criminological theory, ethics in criminal justice, policing, police & society, research methodology and sociology. She is also an instructor through itunesu. 9 Lois Ventura, PhD Dr. Lois A. Ventura is an in the Department of Criminal Justice, Social Work and Legal Specialties. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology with a major in criminology and corrections. She was employed for over 20 years with the Lucas County Sheriff s Office, as a director in the corrections division. During her work with the Sheriff s Office, she was instrumental in the development of a jail mental health and substance abuse program which won state and national recognition. Her research interest is investigating factors which reduce the recidivism of criminal offenders with mental health and/or substance abuse problems. She was the lead researcher on a major project funded by the Ohio Department of Mental Health investigating the effects of case management on the recidivism of persons with mental illness who are released from jail. She has served as a consultant for the National Institute of Corrections, GAINS Center, as well other state and federal agencies on model corrections programs for offenders with mental health and substance problems. She is currently working on research projects which examine the effects of substance abuse treatment services on reducing criminal recidivism. Celia Williamson, PhD Dr. Williamson's research focus has been in the area of human trafficking with particular attention to domestic minor sex trafficking. She has published numerous articles on the subject and has delivered over 200 presentations and been the keynote speaker at more than 20 conferences. She developed an anti-trafficking community program, and works on a county level and state level anti-trafficking coalition. She also studies prostitution, vulnerable women, and drug abuse. She teaches social work practice courses and a human trafficking course. Page 9
