2 Life-saving surgery offers hope for people with aortic stenosis catheter Aortic stenosis is a progressive heart disorder that affects nearly seven percent of adults over age 65. It causes narrowing of the heart s aortic valve and restricts blood flow to the body. Symptoms may include fatigue, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, rapid or irregular heartbeat and chest pain. catheter balloon SAPIEN 3 heart value Individuals with severe stenosis have only a 50 percent chance of living two years. The only effective treatment is aortic valve replacement. However, some patients with this condition are too weak to undergo traditional surgery. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) provides new hope for a longer life and a higher quality of life and is now available at ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital. During TAVR, a surgeon uses a catheter to deliver and place a new valve inside the damaged valve. During TAVR, a catheter is threaded through an artery and used to position a new heart valve inside the damaged one without opening the chest - all while the heart continues to beat. From a patient s perspective, there are many advantages to TAVR and the SAPIEN 3. And recovery is easier than with open-heart surgery because the chest doesn t have to be opened. Dr. Schmitz works collaboratively with John Kelemen, MD, and Mark Stout, MD cardiothoracic surgeons practicing at Waukesha Memorial as part of ProHealth Care s partnership with Indiana University Health to determine whether an individual is a candidate for TAVR. 3 Robots have long held leading roles in books and movies. Did you know that one has been part of ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital s surgical team for over a decade? ProHealth Care is now one of only two health care systems in southeastern Wisconsin to offer the latest generation of robotic surgery technology. John Touzios, MD, a fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon, was the first to use the new da Vinci Xi robot at Waukesha Memorial. The enhanced system allows physicians to perform minimally invasive surgery in a broader range of cases. John Touzios, MD The design of the new robot allows me to access areas inside the body safely, from almost any position, says Dr. Touzios. Better visualization and positioning allow me to offer robotic surgery as a new option for some patients with complex conditions and cancers. The da Vinci system allows surgeons to operate through small incisions. It translates the surgeon s hand movements at a control panel into precise movements of tiny instruments attached to the robot s arms. Patients experience less blood loss, scarring and pain, a reduced risk of infection and a shorter hospital stay. They also return to normal activities sooner. Surgeons benefit, too. The new robot has smaller, thinner arms, longer instrument shafts and newly designed joints, offering surgeons greater reach and range of motion. The Xi also has fluorescence imaging capability, allowing surgeons to see and assess anatomy better than ever. It helps them determine whether tissue is cancerous and aids in the visualization of blood supply to a tumor. We are pleased to be one of only a few hospitals in the state to offer the latest robotic advancements, giving us even more capability in the operating room, said Dr. Touzios. Waukesha Memorial Hospital s robotic surgery team performs more cases than any other program in da Vinci Xi southeastern Wisconsin. Twenty-six specially trained robotic surgeons have performed more than 2,700 surgeries. They represent eight specialties: cardiothoracic surgery, colorectal surgery, general surgery, gynecologic oncology, gynecology, otolaryngology, urology and urogynecology. 4 MECHANICAL CHEST COMPRESSION DEVICE HELPS SAVE WOMAN S LIFE You won t read about it in celestial journals or astronomical guides, but Nov. 29, 2014, is the day the stars and planets were in absolutely perfect alignment for Diane Newman. It was a right place, right time sort of event, explains Mark Schultz, DO, the emergency medicine physician who was on duty when Diane was brought to the emergency department at ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital in the throes of a heart attack. A ton of pieces had to be in place knowledgeable emergency personnel, experienced hospital staff, a patient who was a fighter and they all were. Mark Schultz, DO And that s why Diane is alive today. It was a fairly typical Saturday for Diane and Rudy Langenbach, her significant other of 18 years. They were meeting with their insurance agent to discuss supplemental insurance policies. As the conversation progressed, Diane had difficulty understanding what the agent was saying. She became increasingly confused and wanted to go home. After arriving at home, Diane still didn t feel well. She suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of doom. I told Rudy to dial 911 and then lost consciousness, says Diane. When she opened her eyes, her house was full of first responders. Diane was alert for a short while, but lost consciousness again. Then her heart stopped beating. Paramedics defibrillated Diane once, then again to try to restore her heart beat. They moved her to the floor and started CPR with standard hands-on compressions. Fortunately, the paramedics had with them a Lucas device a portable, battery-operated chest compression machine that they were able to use on Diane. Hands-on CPR is very difficult to do, especially in a moving ambulance. Going around turns, speeding up, slowing down, it s nearly impossible to maintain a consistent rhythm, explains Dr. Schultz. That s what the Lucas device does. It provides the consistent rhythm to ensure an uninterrupted flow of blood and oxygen to the patient s heart and brain. That helps avoid neurological damage and also frees up rescue personnel to focus on other tasks without a pause or gap in compressions. ProHealth Care has four Lucas devices that were purchased through donations to the ProHealth Care Foundation. When the ambulance with Diane arrived at Waukesha Memorial, her condition was grave.
