5 Welcome to the University of Macerata One of the oldest Institutions of higher education in Italy 1. THE UNIVERSITY OF MACERATA 1.1 A LONG TRADITION The University of Macerata was founded in About eight centuries of social and personal history have rolled by, and through this time thousands of girls and boys became ruling class members, professionals, entrepreneurs, educators. We can surely say that a bit of Italian, European and international history was built thanks to the all-times graduates from Macerata. 1.2 MACERATA AND ITS TERRITORY Coming to study in Italy offer a unique cultural experience for students from all over the world and Macerata, on the Eastern side of Central Italy, has much to offer. It is a medium-sized town ( inhabitants) standing in the Province of Macerata which lies in the centre of the Marche region between the sea and the mountains, surrounded by soft rolling hills. The area is characterised by its excellent quality of life, due to the province s clean air, parks, and to its peaceful yet lively atmosphere that seems to be present in all of the cities and towns dotting the landscape around. Macerata s location is ideal for reaching all that the province has to offer. The Adriatic Sea Coast, ski resorts, and the National Park of The Sibillini Mountains are all relatively nearby the city. The Province of Macerata is notable for its employment rate and the great number of small and medium-sized businesses. Many companies in the Province are international leaders in various fields including footwear, electronics, lighting technology, food products, furniture, toys and leather goods. The Province is also of great interest from an artistic and architectural point of view. It is rich with churches, abbeys, historic palaces, and museums that recall the tales of different historical periods and the important people who are linked to our land. Moreover, the theatre and outdoor opera house (the Sferisterio) each year welcomes the tourists with a rich theatre and opera season featuring internationally famous artists and shows. The city of Macerata offers plenty of ways to enjoy oneself, with several bars, restaurants and pubs throughout the historic centre. These places are popular gathering spots for many university students and young people. 1.3 THE CURTAIN RAISES Fun, cultural events, sport, shows and happenings are on all year round, for everybody. Three big events particularly have drawn the attention on this town, in Italy and in Europe: the opera season MacerataOpera and the singer-songrwriter song festival Musicultura (both taking place in the spectacular set of the Arena Sferisterio, unique in its way) and the volley ball season with the Lube Volley team, national champion. The University of Macerata is a partner of the Musicultura festival (the next one is the 19th edition). The university, through this music contest, gives the students the possibility to work as members of the editorial staff and of the jury. We are never behind the scenes. The University of Macerata has been for years official sponsor of the volley ball team Lube Volley. Sport, young people and education together play a good team game. 4

6 1.4 ORGANIZATION OF THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM THREE-YEAR DEGREES AND SPECIALISED/ADVANCED DEGREES With the Ministerial Decree no. 270 of October 2004 the Ministry of Education brought in extensive reforms of the Italian University system so that there now exist two levels of degree (laurea). the first level degree is the Laurea Triennale obtained at the end of a three year course. It prepares students for intermediate job positions in the labour market. the second level degree is the Laurea Magistrale, a post-graduate degree obtained after a two-year course. It prepares students for higher, managerial and professional positions. Three-year undergraduate courses (Laurea triennale) 1 st Level Master course Two-year graduate courses (Laurea magistrale) 2 nd Level Master course Ph.D Programmes WHAT ARE CREDITS? The University credit system (CFU) which is based on ECTS system, is represented by numerical values allocated to course units to describe the student workload. Each credit is equivalent to 25 hours work including lessons, hands-on practice, laboratories, internships and self-study. The total work of an Italian student is calculated as 60 credits which correspond to 1500 hours per year. A course unit will be allocated with credits when examination is passed by the student with a minimum grade of 18/30. For further information on ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) the reference website is: WHAT ARE CLASSES? (classi) Under the new system, following the reform, all degree courses are grouped into classes (classi) which relate to a specific field of study. Degrees belonging to one class all have the same legal value. 5

After having selected your courses, you will attend your lectures without having to register in advance you simply go to the first lesson available. More details on timetables, rooms, professors office hours and final exams are available on the web page of the single faculties ( No exchange students are admitted in one-year Master courses and Ph.D Programmes. 2.4 PROFESSORS CONTACTS AND WEB PAGES Professors have a personal web page with information on their contacts, courses and office hours. 12 2.6 FINAL EXAMS STUDENTS MEMORANDUM: - To take the final exam, you will have to register about 10 days in advance by sending an message to the professor, specifying your name, the exam title and the date you will be sitting for the exam. To find all the professors addresses and personal pages, just write the professor s surname in the search string CERCA (yellow button) on our homepage To find the exam dates, look on the web sites of the single Faculties ( - On the day of your exam, don t forget to bring your Libretto degli studi (records book). Your teacher will record your exam, your marks and the number of ECTS credits awarded, both on your Libretto degli studi and on the official exam register (the Libretto is not legally valid and is only a student memorandum) TEACHERS MEMORANDUM - The foreign students coming within mobility programmes can access to all degree courses without distinction, both of first and second level, attend the lectures and take the related exams (except from the Specializing Schools, Doctorates and Master s degree courses). - The exams of mobility foreign students are to be recorded following exactly the same procedure adopted for Italian students, carefully filling all the fields provided in the exam register. - When recording an exam, the teacher must always report the number of credits achieved, according to the Italian study plan. Should the student ask to take an exam with a number of credits lesser or greater than those indicated in the current study plan, the Sending Institution Coordinator will have to request it in a specific request in writing and with the due reasons. Then, the Delegate to International Relations of the pertaining Faculty in our university will evaluate if the request is relevant. However, only special cases will be considered to apply for this procedure. - In the exams register, in the space for the matriculation number, the teacher must write the type of mobility or exchange programme. So, for example, «Erasmus student», «Bilateral agreement student», etc. (as provided in the student s university record book under the item «Università degli Studi di Macerata»). - The session in which the international student takes the exam must be correspondent to the academic mobility year of the student. For instance: if a student is part of the Erasmus exchange for the academic year , he/she cannot take exams scheduled for students of previous academic years, otherwise the exam will be automatically cancelled. - The foreign students must take the exams following the prearranged schedule and the enrolment procedures as requested by the various Faculties. If the exam calls overlap and the students cannot extend their mobility staying until the next exam call, the students can submit to the teacher a specific request, duly proved and with the detailed reasons, to put off the exam. The teacher can re-open the exam session (always complying with the session terms) and record the exam by clearly specifying that the re-opened session is reserved only to foreign students who have concomitant exams. However, only special cases and oral exams will be considered to apply for this procedure. - The teacher must submit, through the university post service, the copies of the exams registers (yellow sheets) to the Student Secretariat of the pertaining faculty immediately after closing the exam call as, according with what is submitted to the Student Secretariat, the International Relations Centre will draw up the transcript of records to forward to the Sending Institution in good time. 11

These courses are at no cost for the students and are aimed at developing the language skills required for your subsequent studies. The courses available are: ON-LINE COURSE: before arriving to Italy, in September 2010 ON-SITE COURSES: in classroom, once arrived in Italy o 1 st sem.: from the middle of September to the first week of October 2010 Level: beginner, intermediate, advanced. o 2 nd sem.: from February 2011 Level: to be decided according to the number of the applicants and to their Italian language skills. If you wish to attend our Italian language courses (either on-line or on-site) please, mark the appropriate entry in your Application form. The on-line course is based on a web environment, organized to let students get familiar with the Italian Language, the University of Macerata and Italy in general before your arrival. Although not intended to be a proper language course, it offers a chance for interaction and intercultural communication among all the students, to share ideas about Italy, Italian, and Italians. In the on-line environment you can virtually meet and get in touch with all the other visiting students, and moreover with some other persons, from the University of Macerata itself, who are involved with their future arrival. There, you ll be given the chance to do some activities in order to get ready to your stay in Italy, according to both the linguistic and cultural point of view. The on-site courses are held in the 1 st and 2 nd semester of every a.y. You will attend a beginner, intermediate or advanced course (40 hours) depending on the results of an exam testing your Italian language skills. 8 ECTS credits are recognized for these courses for students attending 75% of the classes and passing the final exam. 3.4 ERASMUS BUDDY The International Office gives all exchange students the opportunity to apply for an Erasmus Buddy: a student from the University of Macerata who will help them get integrated into Macerata s university and social life. If you want to take part in the programme, tick the relevant item in the Application Form. We always try to find Erasmus Buddies for all foreign students.
