2 What is open source? Open source refers to any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit. Open source software is usually developed as a public collaboration and made freely available. Open source licenses include the GNU General Public License. Popular open-source software includes: Apache, PHP, Mozilla Firebird and the Linux kernel.

3 Open Source Initiative (OSI) Is a non-profit corporation dedicated to managing and promoting the Open Source Definition for the good of the community, specifically through the OSI Certified Open Source Software certification mark and program.

4 Open Source VS Free Software All free software is open source; free software is a subset of open source software. open-source software may or may not be "free," but in practice, nearly all open-source licenses also satisfy the FSF's free software definition. The free software movement emphasizes the moral and ethical aspects of software, seeing technical excellence as a desirable by-product of its ethical standard. The open source movement sees technical excellence as the primary goal, regarding source code sharing as a means to an end.

Versions have been run on anything from a handheld computers and regular PCs, to the world's most powerful supercomputers FreeBSD: The BSDs are all based on the Berkeley Systems Distribution of Unix

7 Open Source Web Server (Apache) The goal of this project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible server that provides HTTP services in sync with the current HTTP standards Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April 1996 The November 2005 Netcraft Web Server Survey found that more than 70% of the web sites on the Internet are using Apache, thus making it more widely used than all other web servers combined.

11 Countries Using Open Source The German government announced a deal to replace parts of its IT system with open-source programs. Taiwan officials announced, as part of an effort to curb Microsoft's dominance in software, preliminary plans to promote the development of local Linux software. In Norway, government representatives said they have looked into open-source software as a way to cut costs. The prospect of paying more for software has prompted changes in France, too. The China government works with Red Flag Software, based in Beijing, to install Red Flag Linux on some government computers.

12 Open-source software in developing countries A study points out that while the initial interest in open source to developing countries may stem from its lower cost, they also should be aware of the longer term benefit of increased choice to consumers, as the emergence of open source creates more information technology options. As software expands more and more into the lives of people in developing countries, there should be improved access to the market for all software providers
