Barriers and opportunities within (BI)PV as a technological niche. with respect to residential roofing applications 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre
Introduction Guus Verberne Master student Innovation Management Graduate Intern at Solar Energy Application Centre (SEAC) My research topics: Analysis of the Dutch residential Building-Integrated PV (BIPV) roofing market. Techno-financial modeling to investigate the feasibility of BIPV in the Netherlands. Finding and developing business models for an aesthetic energy roof. A BIPV roofing concept developed for residential dwellings. 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 2
Drivers for privately owned PV Price (perception) Aesthetic value Environmental External incentives and/or in the frontier form of Value policies 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 3
Introduction in BIPV BIPV deals with photovoltaic materials that are integrated in a building's envelope and represent a double function. It functions as the conventional building material and as a means to produce electricity by exhibiting the photovoltaic effect. 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 4
17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 5
The residential PV market Nederland telt momenteel bijna leveranciers van zonneenergiesystemen (Energeia, 2013). De Nederlandse netbeheerders registreerden vorig jaar nieuwe installaties, het merendeel op daken van particulieren (NU.nl, 2014). 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 6
The advantages of BIPV Homogenous appearance 1 part represents 2 functions o o construction element device to generate electricity Cheaper than BAPV? Easier to install? 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 7
The residential BIPV market What are the opportunities and barriers for the BIPV market? What are the opportunities and barriers for BIPV as a technology? What are the opportunities and barriers in the government policies for BIPV? Interrelated Can we develop an business model which addresses these questions? A product and price benchmark study was executed to review the current status of BIPV as a roofing product for the Netherlands. 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 8
Benchmark outline Detached house Roof area of 125 m2 (source: AgentschapNL) Average electricity use 4600 kwh/year (source: CBS) Orientation roof: South PV system size in Wp: 5100 Wp Types of integrations Retro-fit Renovation New built Types of roof solutions + participants Conventional roofing 3 Building-Applied PV (BAPV) 8 BIPV in-roof mounting system 6 BIPV tiles 5 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 9
price overlap (17 k ) 30% difference (17 k k ) 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 10
Conclusions benchmark study Overall we see a positive trend regarding BIPV products. Number of BIPV module producers is the Benelux is increasing Price overlap between BAPV and BIPV in-roof mounting systems. There is still a considerable price gap between BAPV and BIPV tiles So, Is there are a market for BIPV? 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 11
The BIPV technology What kind of PV modules do we need? High efficiency cells? which color? which shape? is high efficiency really important? is the yield loss of BIPV due to higher panel temperatures a problem? is the yield loss of BIPV due to panel color a problem? 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 12
An example: House with 60 m2 free, south oriented roof space in the (NL) Demand is 4600 kwh / year Therefore, the system size is 5100 Wp Two options Mono-Si 150 Wp / m2 Price 90 / m2 (spot prices) CdTe (thinfilm) 110 Wp / m2 Price 55 / m2 (spot prices) Which option has the lowest costs? Mono-Si (5100 / 150) = 34 m2 34 * 90 = 3060 CdTe (5100 / 110) = 46 m2 46 * 55 = 2550 So, is there are a technology for BIPV? 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 13
Dutch government policies Net-metering as incentive What happens when the net-metering policy changes? ROI (Return Of Investment) increases? What are possible future policies? Techno-financial modeling EPC norm as incentive EPC norm at the moment new-built: 0.6 EPC norm from 1 jan. 2015: 0.4 Article: begin April 2014 Interview results: 75% of project developers have opinion that PV is necessary to reach new target. So, are there government policies? 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 14
A short recap What are the opportunities and barriers for the BIPV market? What are the opportunities and barriers for BIPV as a technology? What are the opportunities and barriers in the government policies for BIPV? Can we develop an business model which addresses these questions? 17 April 2014 Solar Energy Application Centre 15
