3 COURSES WORKSHOPS EVENTS student paper presentation Salon presenter: David Cushman, Psy.D. Discussant: Terrance Owens, Ph.D. location: The Psychotherapy Institute 2232 Carleton Street, Berkeley, CA Date: friday, January 30, 2015 time: 6:30 8:30 pm Fee: free Community mental health practitioners are asked to address a range of clients needs, including case management and advocacy work, which can bring about complex enactments between therapist and client. Yet, psychoanalysis has historically devalued case management and other supportive interventions, viewing them as outside the analytic method and a distraction from the real purpose of therapy. This false binary has continued even as contemporary psychoanalysis turns towards a relational perspective that aspires to incorporate a more flexible frame. Exploring case management enactments within the analytic frame, with particular emphasis on socio-cultural-political issues, is a critical aspect of working with all clients, especially those who are marginalized in society. supervision In the AnAlYtIc FIelD Course Instructor: Robert Carrere, Ph.D., ABPP ce: 6 CE credits location: Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC) 530 Bush Street, 7th floor, San francisco, CA Date: fridays, february 6 and 13, 2015 time: 9:00 am 12:00 pm tuition: $210 General Public $150 NCSPP full Members $125 NCSPP Associate Members $90 NCSPP Student Members $90 Scholarship Rate (prior approval required see website for details) Given that the essential training of skilled therapists is experiential in nature and covered by the arena of supervision, the supervisory relationship makes a vital and crucial contribution to the clinical growth and development of a psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic identity. This course will address a psychoanalytic approach to the supervisory process. Various conceptualizations will be presented, including: transference/countertransference problems, dilemmas, and impasses parallel processes occurring among patient, therapist, and supervisor differences between didactic supervision and process supervision mutuality inherent in the supervisory relationship implications for an intersubjective/interpersonal perspective on supervision The course will also include discussion of assigned articles and participant presentations of supervisory experiences. Participants will have an opportunity to struggle with supervisory problems, cases, and situations presented and provide consultation/supervision on these therapeutic dilemmas. Participants are expected to integrate their supervisory styles and approaches with the conceptualizations presented in the articles. 3
4 scientific meeting there Is no such thing As A BABY: early psychic life of twins Instructor: Ruth Simon, Ph.D. Discussant: TBA ce: 3 CE credits location: The Wright Institute 2728 Durant Avenue, Room 109/110, Berkeley, CA Date: Saturday, february 21, 2015 time: 10:00 am 1:00 pm tuition: $15 General Public free NCSPP Members Additional $10 processing fee for CE credits In this presentation, Winnicott s theory of infant development is expanded to consider the unique psychic situation of twins. Two infants come into being in a matrix of relationships that is more complex than the single baby-mother unit. The mother of twins is preoccupied with both of her babies, and their internal worlds will include a social context in addition to a sense of an individual self. Their formative experiences include conflicts between being primary and environmental, between being interrupted and being an interruption. Because twins have equivalent and simultaneous psychic needs and their mother has one psychic apparatus, she experiences conflict when attending to either baby individually. fathers of twins offer dyadic experiences that are less complex than the always-triadic maternal relationship, and these become critical in the twins development of me/not-me relations. After a formal paper presentation of this work, a non psychologist twin will speak about her family experience and her twin sister. A conversation with the audience will follow. FounDAtIons: An Introduction to melanie klein Course Instructor: Margo Chapin, MfT ce: 9 CE credits location: St. Clement s Episcopal Church 2837 Claremont Boulevard, Berkeley, CA Date: Mondays, March 2 April 6, 2015 time: 7:30 9:00 pm tuition: $315 General Public $225 NCSPP full Members $180 NCSPP Associate Members $135 NCSPP Student Members $135 Scholarship Rate (prior approval required see website for details) Melanie Klein, a passionate lover of psychoanalysis, extended our understanding of the uncharted development of the mind. By analyzing children s play, much as freud had analyzed dreams, she discovered that primitive states emerge in infancy, preceding dynamics of the Oedipal Complex much earlier than originally believed by freud. In her psychoanalytic work with children, Klein came to understand the child s deepest fears and their defenses against them. Her work with children enabled her to advance the current ideas of unconscious phantasy, internal objects, and symbolization. She also made original theoretical contributions to psychoanalysis, most especially the depressive position and the paranoid-schizoid position. Klein showed how these primitive mental states impact both the child and the adult. As the founder of an object-relations theory of the mind, Klein was the first to offer an interpersonal model of early psychic life. Significantly, her theories have inspired some of the most imaginative, insightful psychoanalytic thinkers of our time, who have furthered her original theories and developed indispensable theories of their own. 4
5 28th AnnuAl event AnD lecture the mental pain of minorities: Amelioration and treatment Instructor: Salman Akhtar, M.D. Discussant: francisco González, M.D. case presenter: Annika Sridharan, MSW, Psy.D. ce: 6 CE credits location: The David Brower Center 2150 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA Date: Saturday, March 7, 2015 time: 9:00 am 4:00 pm tuition: TBD ncspp is honored to bring renowned psychoanalyst and poet salman Akhtar, m.d., to the Bay Area. Dr. Akhtar posits that the discord between the subjectivity of minorities and their cultural holding environment (winnicott, 1960) causes chronic mental pain or, in Freud s (1926) terms, seelenschmerz. the unease felt by minorities arises from being stereotyped by a majority s projections, as well as from the figure-ground discord in their own subjectivity. seeking to anesthetize their distress, minorities might retreat from social participation, dream of times/places that could accord them majority status, and even discharge impotent rage via acts of terrorism. Dr. Akhtar highlights opportunities for clinicians to listen for and respond to the effects of discrimination, marginalization, and misinterpretation that create psychic pain for those belonging to minority groups, with the hope of aiding healing and increasing mutual understanding. Dr. Akhtar addresses the role of societal interventions in diminishing mental pain through assuring minorities presence in history textbooks and committing their representation in embodied communal narratives. he highlights how judicial provisions, such as designating prejudicial acts of violence as hate crimes, likewise increases minorities sense of safety. these interventions are not only good for those individuals belonging to minority groups, they are beneficial for the society-at-large and raise all society to a higher humanitarian ground. Additionally, Dr. Akhtar will discuss how collaborative efforts between individuals belonging to the minority and majority groups play an integral role in fostering greater positive change for all members of society. shifts and chasms in the larger culture will be further illustrated by clinical examples of how such phenomena reverberate in the individual psyche. Attention to the nuances of race, immigration status, and family structure will be introduced in the clinical material, providing an opportunity to demonstrate spaces where clinicians might offer a therapeutic response to psychic pain associated with the experience of being a minority, both inside and outside of the clinical encounter. 5

These seminars are a meditation on the work that happens in the silence the therapist s silence, the patient s silence, the multiple meanings and experiences of shared silence. We will explore various types of analytic silence: generative, stubborn, the silence of shame, silence as resistance, regressive silence, as well as spiritual and aesthetic silence. We will look at the developmental stages of silence noting the differences between silence early in the treatment, silence in the middle, and silence at the end. When we consider silence and language as means of connection, communication, and interaction, we expand our appreciation for the unknown, which positively impacts our analytic attitude. This seminar seeks to help us expand our capacity to sit in and value silence, thus facilitating analytic depth. 6

Community mental health practitioners are under enormous pressure to deliver more services with fewer resources, while the problems that we are challenged to resolve are increasingly complex. As we strive to provide meaningful interventions that address the social, psychic, and justice demands of those who struggle the most, we have an even greater need to carve out spaces both within our minds as clinicians and within our places of practice to reflect on our work and connect with one another. Since our inception in 2012, we discovered that many of us are passionate about encouraging a dialogue between community work and psychoanalytic thinking. We hope to continue to build a community around doing so. 7
