Kurek Managing Partner BBC Entrepreneurial Training & Consulting LLC An initiative of Managed by SBIR Impact NYC An initiative of NYCEDC and the City of New York, SBIR Impact NYC is designed to enhance the competitiveness of SBIR/STTR proposals among NYC-based life sciences and healthcare technology companies. The program features: Introductory workshops open to the public. 20 hrs. of one-on-one assistance for each of 20 select companies actively preparing SBIR/STTR proposals. 1

5 The Project $ for PRODUCT Development What is the intended product? What applications will it be used for? What has been done to date? How much is left to do? 9 The Project Based on technological innovation What is the technological innovation that will enable the product to achieve the desired performance? How certain are you that it will work? Is there risk of failure? Will the product be revolutionary or evolutionary? 10 5

Strategic Partners Sources of capital 11 Eligibility for Funding Small business For-profit U. S. owned and controlled < 500 employees Located in the U.S. R&D must be performed in the U.S. 12 6

7 SBIR & STTR Size Regulations Ownership and Control >50% owned and controlled by: i. US citizens, permanent resident aliens and/or one or more domestic business concerns which themselves are >50% owned and controlled by US Citizens or permanent resident aliens..or. ii. Multiple domestic VCOCs, HFs, or PEFs, provided that no single such investor owns more than 50% (SBIR ONLY) SBIR & STTR Size Regulations Size and Affiliation Under 500 employees for SBIR applicant and its affiliates including: Full-time, part-time or other basis Employees obtained from a temporary employee agency, PEO or leasing concern Based on average of number of employees for each pay period in the preceding 12 months 7

8 SBIR & STTR Size Regulations Size and Affiliation Affiliation exists when one business controls or has the power to control another or when a third party controls or has the power to control both businesses SBIR & STTR Size Regulations Timing of Size Certifications Size and eligibility certified at the time of award If awardee grows to > 500 employees during the time of the award it may continue to perform activities covered by the award If awardee merges or is acquired it may only continue for the current funding period and then will have to recertify 8

9 Facilities Requirement The research work to be performed by the awardee is to be conducted in: Company controlled Research space Suitable to do the work proposed 17 SBIR vs. STTR Primary difference is in the relationship with a nonprofit research institution: SBIR allows but does not require the involvement of a non-profit research institution STTR requires the involvement of a non-profit research institution However in either case: The Applicant Organization is always the Small Business! 18 9

Principal Investigator rules SBIR: PI at least 51% EMPLOYED at small business at the time of, and for the duration of, the award STTR: Primary employment either at small business or non-profit research partner (except NSF) Must have at least 10% effort on the project 19 Completing the SBIR Impact NYC Application LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED 10

11 Application: A. General Information Make sure the person is accessible and able to provide clarification on any aspect of the application Make sure is correct and checked regularly Application: B. SBIR/STTR Eligibility Indicate number employed at the time of application (even if 0) If you intend to add additional employees contingent upon funding you can note that later in the application (last field for other information ) If yes, please describe in other information field at end of application 11

SBIR/STTR Eligibility Owners and employees are not the same thing (although an individual may be both an owner and an employee) The purpose of this question is to establish the eligibility of the company based on the US owned requirement Application: B. SBIR/STTR Eligibility Currently means you already have access to and control of the facility If no for both questions you are not yet ready to apply for SBIR Impact NYC so this field should be completed Must be in New York City (five boroughs) to be eligible for SBIR Impact NYC 12

Proposed SBIR/STTR Application As of date of SBIR Impact application submission At time of SBIR/STTR award Of the small business (do not include consultants or subcontractor employees here) Application: C. Proposed SBIR/STTR Application If none identified you are too early for SBIR Impact NYC. Attend basic training. If yes, list and indicate whether or not you ve secured their commitment to participate on the project. You may include both subcontractors and consultants. 13

14 Application: D. Proposed Technology Innovation What product do you plan to develop? Be specific What unmet need will you address? Who is/are your intended customer(s)? How is your project relevant to the life sciences or healthcare technology sectors? What is the underlying science or technology for your innovation? What is unique about your proposed product? Required for SBIR Impact NYC Include information about any existing IP including current ownership and licensing status Application: D. Proposed Technology Innovation Who are your competitors? Are you aware of competitive technologies? Briefly describe your commercialization strategy. Include information on any investors or strategic partners already committed to the project What is your anticipated time horizon? Include information on length of time to complete product development and anticipated time to market entry 14

17 SBIR Impact NYC One-on-one Assistance Limited to 20 companies total On-line application Three cycles $500 Fee per Company 1.5 Day Intensive Workshop for multiple company participants (mandatory) Proposal templates and outlines Weekly group webinars 20 hours of one-on-one consulting SBIR Impact NYC Key Dates Application Deadlines Submission prior to the deadline is strongly encouraged Additional clarification may be requested by Please ensure that contact provided on the application is for the person who can provide additional input Assessment call scheduled for most applicants Participation by PI is required. Additional team members encouraged to participate as appropriate. Available slots fill up quickly so submit your application early! 17

18 SBIR Impact NYC Key Dates Application Decisions Accepted applicants must return a program acknowledgement form agreeing to: Pay the $500 program fee Participate in the SBIR/STTR Intensive Workshop (PI required; others encouraged) Meet all proposal development deadlines Participate in weekly webinars Put in the time necessary to develop the proposal Be coachable! SBIR Impact NYC Key Dates Intensive Workshop Participation mandatory for all Impact Companies PI must attend; participation by other team members strongly encouraged Impact Alumni Companies allowed to attend all subsequent workshops on a space-available basis at no additional cost NIH Omnibus Solicitation Proposal Deadlines: September 5, 2015 NEW Omnibus Cycle 1 January 5, NEW Omnibus Cycle 2 April 5, NEW Omnibus Cycle 3 Impact Client Companies may rollover unused hours for up to 1 cycle if they decide to delay their submission 18
