2 Commission on Substance Abuse Policy and Prevention Alcohol and drug dependency problems affect millions of Americans of all ages every day. The purpose of this booklet is to provide residents of New Haven and the surrounding areas with a variety of substance abuse treatment resources. We hope these services help to guide those in need today. HISTORY The Commission on Substance Abuse Policy and Prevention (CSAPP) was created in 2002 to sustain local efforts in order to continue the work of Fighting Back, the previous substance abuse initiative in New Haven, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for 10 years. The Commission consists of sixteen volunteer representative members, appointed by the Mayor, committed to the promotion and enhancement of the prevention, early intervention, and treatment of alcohol and other drug problems. MISSION CSAPP s mission is to increase the quality of life in New Haven by reducing substance abuse and related harms and by taking leadership in the capturing and sharing of knowledge across systems. CSAPP will engage institutions, groups and individuals to take action towards preventing abuse and ensuring multiple supports for recovery PRIORITIES Begin collecting and compiling local substance abuse information. Increase public prevention messages and raise awareness of the issue. Host Town Hall Meeting on the Prevention of Underage Drinking Host local event in support of National Alcohol and Addiction Recovery Month. We have made every effort to create a comprehensive guide to substance abuse resources in New Haven. However, inadvertent errors and/or omissions may have occurred. If you would like to report an omission or error, or to request that your organization be included in the next CSAPP Resource Guide, please contact us using the information below: Commission on Substance Abuse Policy and Prevention City of New Haven 165 Church Street New Haven, CT (203) Thank you! She has for many years, so I can tell you about some possible things which others might take for granted. When you are drug free, you can laugh with your children. When you are drug free, your laughter teaches your children to laugh. When you are drug free, you can eat meals with your family. When you are drug free, you can help your children with their homework. When you are drug free, you can go to after school activities. When you are drug free, you will not leave your children in places without a ride home. When you are drug free, you can smell smoke in your house. When you are drug free, you can be awake in the morning to send your children off to school. When you are drug free, you can give your children medicine and hugs when they are sick. When you are drug free, your children will feel your love. When you are drug free, your children will have you as a parent. When you are drug free, you will not make your children take care of one another. When you are drug free, you will not make your children feel as though they are not loved and not wanted. When you are drug free, you will show everyone how life can be without drugs. When you are drug free, you will be alive, because when you are not drug free you look and act like you are not there. 21
