6 SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE COURSE DESCRIPTION Introduction to Business Presents a broad introduction to the functioning of business enterprise within the U.S. economic framework. Introduces economic systems, essential elements of business organization, production, human resource management, marketing, finance, and risk management. Develops business vocabulary. Principles of Marketing Presents principles, methods, and problems involved in marketing to consumers and organizational buyers. Discusses problems and policies connected with distribution and sale of products, pricing, promotion, and buyer motivation. Examines variations of marketing research, legal, social, ethical, e-commerce, and international considerations in marketing. Introduction to Computer Applications and Concepts Covers computer concepts and internet skills, and uses a software suite which includes word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software to demonstrate skills. Recommended prerequisite keyboarding skills. Business Communications Teaches techniques of oral and written communications. Emphasizes writing and presenting business-related materials. Principles of Supervision I Teaches the fundamentals of supervision, including the primary responsibilities of the supervisor. Introduces factors relating to the work of supervisor and subordinates. Covers aspects of leadership, job management, work improvement, training and orientation, performance evaluation, and effective employee/supervisor relationships.
7 Spreadsheet Software Covers the use of spreadsheet software to create spreadsheets with formatted cells and cell ranges, control pages, multiple sheets, charts, and macros. Topics include type and edit text in a cell, enter data on multiple worksheets, work with formulas and functions, create charts, pivot tables, and styles, insert headers and footers, and filter data. Principles of Accounting I and Lab Introduces accounting principles with respect to financial reporting. Demonstrates how decision makers use accounting information for reporting purposes. Focuses on the preparation of accounting information and its use in the operation of organizations, as well as methods of analysis and interpretation of accounting information. Credits 3 LAB: Provides problem-solving experience to supplement instruction in ACC 211. Corequisite: ACC 211 may be required. 1 credit Principles of Management Teaches management and the management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Focuses on application of management principles to realistic situations managers encounter as they attempt to achieve organizational objectives.
8 Business Law I Develops a basic understanding of the US business legal environment. Introduces property and contract law, agency and partnership liability, and government regulatory law. Students will be able to apply these legal principles to landlord/tenant disputes, consumer rights issues, employment relationships, and other business transactions. Human Resource Management Introduces employment, selection, and placement of personnel, forecasting, job analysis, job descriptions, training methods and programs, employee evaluation systems, compensation, benefits, and labor relations. Principles of Accounting II Emphasizes partnerships, corporations and the study of financial analysis. Includes and introduces cost/managerial accounting concepts. Co-requisite (ACC 214) may be required. Prerequisite: ACC 211. LAB: Provides problem-solving experience to supplement instruction in ACC 212. Corequisite: ACC 212 may be required. 1 credit Organizational Behavior Presents a behaviorally oriented course combining the functions of management with the psychology of leading and managing people. Focuses on the effective use of human resources through understanding human motivation and behavior patterns, conflict management and resolution, group functioning and process, the psychology of decisionmaking, and the importance of recognizing and managing change. Project Management
9 Provides students with knowledge of essential skills and techniques necessary to lead or participate in projects assigned to managerial personnel. Covers time and task scheduling, resource management, problem solving strategies and other areas related to managing a project. Coordinated Internship Supervises on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the college. Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours. 2 credits Supervised Study Assigns problems for independent study incorporating previous instruction and supervised by the instructor. 2 credits
