5 Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences aims to provide students with a solid scientific education so that they may be able to adapt to the constant evolution of methods and technologies, and to ensure them the level of competitiveness required by the world of work. Students attend educational and research laboratories, supervised by technicians and researchers. The study programmes of the degree courses include stages in companies and apprenticeships, arranged by the Faculty itself. Research for experimental theses may also be extended beyond the Faculty s facilities, with companies or national and international research bodies that have close links to the Faculty. The Faculty supports periods of study abroad through a special service, and many of students make the most of this educational opportunity each year. The places available may also be used by those students who intend to travel abroad for their experimental theses. In September the Faculty organises introductory courses to help new students learn study methods; it also organises a short preparatory course on mathematics and computer, with teaching activities aimed at helping students embark on their university studies more easily. The Dean of Faculty is Professor Alessandro Borghesi. The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences offers 11 first-level degree programmes and 12 second-level degree programmes. 9 Faculty of Sociology The Faculty of Sociology offers degree programmes that provide a solid basic training and preparation in line with the requirements of the employment market. The common denominator and underlying structure of these degree programmes are sociological knowledge and competencies; these are accompanied by teaching units that are relevant to the professional role of interest. For example, data analysis techniques, economics, statistics, philosophy, law, history. Lectures, seminars and laboratories are structured in modules, followed by a week in which all activities are suspended, and then a week dedicated to the exams. This teaching arrangement has various advantages. It allows students to have regular checks on their learning, and to do extra study only on the modules on which they are least prepared. The Faculty places great importance on stage and apprenticeships for undergraduates at organisations and businesses. This is an important way of checking the quality of the teaching and of easing the transition from the university world to the world of work. At international level, participation in the Socrates/Erasmus programme allows students to access courses at a large number of European universities. The Dean of Faculty is Professor Enzo Mingione. The Faculty of Sociology offers 4 first-level degree programmes and 3 second-level degree programmes. 10 Faculty of Statistical Sciences The Faculty of Statistical Sciences is for all those who possess the curiosity to observe reality, wish to understand it, and are interested in communicating it. How? By making numbers talk. Through gathering, processing and summarising data, statistics generate information that is indispensable for making decisions, even in conditions of uncertainty. Statistics is immersed in a context of general knowledge which embraces disciplines as varied as computer science, economics, demography, sociology, psychology, biomedicine and environmental sciences. The Faculty of Statistical Sciences was set up to fill a gap in the range of studies offered by universities in the North West of Italy, and to satisfy the growing need for statistics experts for national and international institutions, businesses and public bodies. A particular feature of this Faculty is its intention to establish an organic partnership with Milano s economic and social context. The academic and business worlds are committed to working together to increase the worth of the skills that students acquire. Proof of this lies in the fact that the Faculty has set up around 200 stage agreements with businesses and associations, to allow all students to carry out a stage, under the supervision of a Faculty lecturer or a manager at the business or organisation where the stage takes place. The Dean of Faculty is Professor Donata Marasini. The Faculty of Statistical Sciences offers 2 first-level degree programmes and 2 second-level degree programmes.
