3 The Project THE LANDSCAPE DESIGN STUDIO WAS ASKED TO LOOK AT THE MAPLEWOOD MALL AREA OF GERMANTOWN IN PHILADELPHIA, PA TO HELP REDESIGN THE MALL USING SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PRINCIPLES. THE STUDENTS DEVELOPED DESIGN SOLUTIONS THAT INTEGRATED THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL-CULTURAL ISSUES AND ECONOMIC BENEFITS. THE FOLLOWING PAGES CONTAIN THE DESIGN CONCEPTS AND MASTER PLANS THAT INCORPORATE SUSTAINABLE BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES. THE STUDENTS WERE MENTORED BY PROFESSORS DR. CLAUDIA PHILLIPS AND ADAM BARBE. 5 Alexander Batten Alexander Batten Master Plan Design Process Grading Plan This design was created around the concept of movement. Features like rhythm, repetition, and formality were used to exemplify movement around and within the site. Water runoff is captured and developed into a feature that shows the form of the land and its natural movement. The design creates solutions to accommodate the high volume of runoff throughout the site. The increased green space turns the Maplewood Mall into a revitalized Green Street.

7 James Bonney James Bonney Melody in Transit This forward thinking green design of Maplewood Mall is influenced by Germantown s past to accommodate the current and future needs of the business owners and community. The concept of Melody in Transit comes from the rich historical fabric of Germantown. The melody of Jazz informs and connects Maplewood Mall to the culture of Germantown. The reference to the rail line s as a connection to the area s history and the train s influence on Germantown commerce.

12 Courtney Emerich Courtney Emerich This design was created around the element of water. the emotions, presence, and states of water were all kept in mind throughout the design process. The two main issues that are prevalent on this site are runoff and lack of green space. This design addresses both of these issues while creating a flexible and lively street that can be used for a multitude of purposes.

16 David M.A. Guerriero David M.A. Guerriero Sustainable initiatives have been designed into Multi-use Plaza Sculpture Rain Garden Green Pedestrian Street Community Garden Child Play Area Performance Area Multi-Use Area Rain Garden Building Removal Multi-use Areas This design is based on the concept of transition of the environment through this urban site. The design depicts a transition from a naturalistic, almost historic Germantown setting to a modern landscape that is more hardscape than softscape. It also shows how people experience this transitional urban enviromment along its edges. Transitioning was influenced by lines based off the architecture of the site--much like the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. A study of urban parks and their edges served as precedents for this design. Diagrams and quick sketch the project design. The site has been designed to be a completely pedestrian friendly, promoting public transportation and limiting personal vehicles. The site has been converted to largely permeable pavement, and includes natural water absorbing features such as rain gardens. The site is currently covered in stone and brick; this design recycles and reuses these materials in the walkway, sculpture rain garden, and seclusion walls for the children s play area. The design also proposes more appropriate placement for trees in different settings with an emphasis on native plant species. There is also a community garden for use by the residents living above the businesses of the mall. The design also proposes that businesses become involved by giving a discount of some sort to customers who can show they have taken public transportation to the Maplewood Mall. studies were explored to reveal the personal interaction someone experiences transitioning to and from an urban environment.

THE STAGE WILL BE USED BY LOCAL SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS TO HOLD PLAYS, JAZZ CONCERTS, OR OTHER ACTIVITIES. Alyssa Tullar RECYCLED GLASS FOR MOSAICS GREEN ROOF FOR PARKING-- LOCATED ABOVE THE RECESSED PARKING LOT. THERE IS A MEDITATIVE SPACE ENCLOSED IN TREES THAT HELP THE USER DISCONNECT. THE SPACE IS CLOSE ENOUGH TO HEAR THE MUSIC WHEN THERE IS A CONCERT. SHADE/POLLUTION REMOVAL BY TREES PLAYGROUND-- LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SITE FOR USE BY THE DAY CARE CENTER AND OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDREN. THIS ALSO HELPS THE SITE BECOME MORE FAMILY ORIENTED. LOCAL FOOD (FARMERS MARKET) WATER FEATURE-- THE POND IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE PLAYGROUND SO THE FAMILIES CAN INTERACT WITH IT. WATER APPEALS TO ALL THE SENSES. FARMERS MARKET-- THE MARKET WILL BRING IN LOCAL FOODS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES. THIS PROVIDES A MORE INTERACTIVE SITE WITH THE LARGER COMMUNITY. THIS ALSO PROVIDES THE SITE WITH APPEALING AROMAS. PERVIOUS PAVERS SCULPTURE--THE SCULPTURE IS LOCATED HERE TO SHOW THE PERSONALITY OF THE SITE AND OF THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THE SYMBOL EXEMPLIFIES STRENGHT.
