Welcome to Vyners School Whether you are a student, parent, prospective parent, neighbour or a potential candidate for a post at Vyners - we hope that this brochure will provide a brief insight into our school and some of the fantastic work undertaken by our highly motivated students and exceptional staff. Leaders and managers at all levels work as a single team, striving to make the school the best it can be. Ofsted 2013 Our aim is simple. We want to be a truly great school in every sense of the word and we want to be confident that hand on heart 100% of our students get a better deal here than they would in any other school. Vyners is an extremely popular and successful 11-19yrs school with an excellent reputation for academic achievement and extra-curricular activities. For two years running we have been recognised as being in the top 100 most improved schools nationally at GCSE and in the top 15% of schools at A-Level. The most recent Ofsted inspection in December 2013 agreed with the school s self-evaluation that we are a Good school with Outstanding Behaviour and Safety, Leadership and Management. Within this brochure I hope you will find all the information you need to make an informed choice, although I would strongly recommend that you come to see us in action to really find out what makes Vyners such a great school. Every day is Open Day at Vyners and visitors are always welcome. James Heale Headteacher Vyners School Prospectus 01

Our Values Our school values: Community, Aspiration, Respect and Endeavour, underpin everything we do and were developed in conjunction with students, staff, parents and governors in These are supported by the Vyners 10, a series of positive values statements that reinforce the high expectations we have. At Vyners, we successfully combine a 21st Century education with traditional high expectations of uniform, behaviour and standards. We pride ourselves on the positive relationships that exist in the school and the sense of being part of a happy community. We are a genuinely comprehensive school, believing that all students bring their own talents to our community. We value our students equally and take great care to make sure that every one of them is happy, secure and successful. Behaviour and attitudes are exceptional. Relationships are positive and students embrace their learning with enthusiasm. I firmly believe that the success of a school should be measured by where its students are five to ten years after they leave it. We have a strong tradition of our students attending some of the best universities in the country and our alumni can be found in a wide range of exciting careers. Many of them remain committed to Vyners School and return to support the current students as they strive for excellence. Ofsted Vyners School Prospectus Vyners School Prospectus 03

Community Aspiration Vyners School values its longstanding role in the local community. We are proud that as many as three generations of a single family have attended the school in its fifty-five year history. Community Our traditional house system unites students from different year groups in sporting, musical and dramatic endeavours as well as extensive fundraising activities. Visitors to the school and those that have been part of Vyners for a number of years are all in agreement that it is a unique, friendly and supportive environment. I value others and understand that our individuality makes our community stronger. I share in and celebrate everyone s success. Aspiration Our school motto is Striving for Excellence and everyone in our community is encouraged to challenge themselves to be the best that they can be. We encourage students to have big goals, stretching themselves beyond their comfort zone on a daily basis in lessons and during enrichment activities. I am proud of who I am and what I have achieved today. I actively participate in lessons and school activities. Students are remarkably welcoming to visitors and treat each other and staff with great respect. Ofsted Vyners School Prospectus Vyners School Prospectus 05

Respect Endeavour I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Headteacher and all the teaching staff that have created a superb learning environment for my son during his first year at secondary school. OLetter from a parent of a Year 7 student Every opportunity is taken to build ambition by showing what success means. Ofsted 2013 Respect As a school we have traditional values and high expectations of behaviour, uniform, good manners and attendance. These are the non-negotiable foundations of our school, modelled by all students and staff. I do as I m asked, the first time I m asked I am always in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing I understand that school is a formal environment; I dress and behave accordingly I attend regularly and arrive on time with the correct equipment I am proud of our school, helping to look after it and create a positive learning environment Endeavour Learning by its very nature is hard and we want to encourage students who are resilient, not afraid to take calculated risks and make mistakes. We want them to stretch themselves as we know that the most valuable learning takes place outside their comfort zone. There is no such thing as I can t do it, only I can t do it yet. This Growth Mindset is nurtured by staff and praised where it is demonstrated. I can, if I think I can, and I strive to do my best even when learning is difficult 06 Vyners School Prospectus Vyners School Prospectus 07

I believe the opportunities for learning outside of standard curriculum are equally as important as academic qualifications and, in my experience, Vyners recognises and actively supports the development of life skills. Extra-curricular activities Our wide range of extra-curricular activities ensures that students are encouraged to strive for excellence not just academically but in all aspects of life. Parent of Year 8 and 10 students

Learning at Vyners All students are expected to work hard and do their very best. This ensures that they are active learners and makes being in lessons a fun and rewarding experience. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that offers all students the opportunity to succeed in the workplace and society of the twenty-first century. We teach students the skills to be effective learners and encourage in them a love of learning that they will keep throughout their life. A dedicated team of professional, well qualified, skilled, teachers and associate staff provide outstanding learning experiences for students. Students are encouraged to be curious, independent learners supported at home by parents and carers who play a critical part in their development towards responsible young citizens. The school has invested significantly in developing the quality of the learning environment, refurbishing the interior and exterior of the buildings so that it provides an inspirational, welcoming ethos where success is openly celebrated. Teachers inspire students interest in their subject and make them want to learn more. Ofsted Vyners School Prospectus Vyners School Prospectus 11

Life at Vyners The education we provide at Vyners School extends well beyond the classroom. We strive to develop wellrounded individuals giving them the cultural awareness and leadership skills needed to be successful in life. Students of all ages say that they feel safe everywhere in the school. They are very clear that any instance of unkindness is dealt with immediately and stopped in its tracks. Ofsted 2013 The energy and enthusiasm of our students and staff are evident in a wide range of extra-curricular activities and all members of the school are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities available. We excel in music with our award winning Vyners School Swing Band along with our junior and senior orchestras, African drummers, Ukulele choir and many others. Our Christmas, summer and instrumental concerts provide a showcase for the wealth of musical talent in the school. Our annual Drama production forms a highlight of our school year with recent shows including We Will Rock You, Little Shop of Horrors and High School Musical. Vyners continues to be successful in our sporting endeavours, with success throughout the borough in rugby, football, hockey and netball, to name a few. In 2013 we were crowned boys national 8-a-side cricket champions and became a regional hub school for the English Cricket Board. We encourage all students to find a sport that they love and activities on offer range from Archery and Trampolining to Mountain Biking and Handball. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is a core feature of activity in years 10-11, with large numbers of students completing the Bronze Award and sixth formers embarking on their Silver Award. Opportunities for students also extend abroad with a skiing trip to Austria, cultural visits to France and Germany, a biennial rugby tour to Canada, gallery visits to New York, Geography field trips to Iceland and Costa Rica and an established international school link with Uganda. 12 Vyners School Prospectus Vyners School Prospectus 13

The Sixth Form at Vyners The Sixth form is an integral and highly successful part of the school community. The majority of our Year 11 students continue their education in the Sixth Form where they are joined by students from other schools. Nearly all our students go on to higher education including entries to the very best universities in the country. The Sixth Form has its own identity but the students play a significant role as leaders within the wider school community as Prefects, House Captains, Sports Leaders and role models. All students contribute to the whole school through community work, supporting younger students in lessons and delivering assemblies. As students move through the Sixth Form they are assured of expert guidance from experienced subject staff, tutors and the pastoral team as they deal with the challenges of entry into Higher Education, employment, training or gap years. We have a dedicated member of staff who works to identify and mentor potential Oxbridge candidates as well as supporting all students with their UCAS applications. Sixth form students say they appreciate the way in which they are taught to have confidence in managing their learning. Ofsted Vyners School Prospectus Vyners School Prospectus 15

High Wycombe Amersham M25 Watford Borehamwood M1 Barnet Enfield Vyners School M40 West Ruislip Maidenhead Hillingdon Ickenham Wembley A406 A41 M4 Slough A406 A40 CENTRAL LONDON Matt Briers I loved my time at Vyners, taking advantage of all the sport and extracurricular opportunities open to me. I studied Mathematics, Physics and German at A-Level (for which I won a gold award!) and was encouraged to apply for the best universities. I was successful and went on to read Engineering, Economics & Management at the University of Oxford for 4 years. After graduating I worked in Strategy Consulting and Banking, in London and various other locations, for 12 years. In 2012 I joined Google as their Head of Finance for the UK business in London. I now live with my wife and two children in Kent as well as finding time to come back to Vyners to support current students in preparing for the workplace. Beth Kume-Holland Many people leave their school and don t look back, but Vyners School makes people do exactly the opposite. Not only did Vyners teach me how to excel academically, it taught me about community, confidence and how you should set no limits on what you can achieve in your life. I m now lucky enough to be studying History at the University of Oxford. It s like a Harry Potter dream; and other than working hard, I ve had such fun rowing and competing, singing and organising a couple of college events and during the summer I m returning to the McKinsey National Leadership Academy which, thanks to Vyners, I have been attending since Year 12. Admittedly, coming from a comprehensive school I do stand out at Oxford, but I am so proud of that fact. If anybody asks me, I proudly tell them that not only do I come from a state school, I come from one which is quickly becoming one of the best in the country. Vyners goes above and beyond for its students and the skills which you learn, friendships you forge and memories you create; you take them with you. Josh Valman I began my engineering career at 10 years old, with a fascination in robotics. By age 15 I was consulting on supply chain and engineering for some of the world s largest manufacturing companies. Throughout my time at Vyners I received great support from my teachers and other staff. Applying real world situations to education is incredibly important and something embraced by Vyners School. Through multiple school trips, special guest speakers and their commitment to a well-rounded education, Vyners was a powerful starting point from which to launch my business. Now, aged 19, I am the Managing Director at RPD International. We operate globally and were recently valued as a multi-million dollar company. From our headquarters in London s Westminster, my teams provide product design, manufacturing and supply chain solutions to companies across Europe, Asia and America. Clients include top aerospace firms, major airlines, high-street retailers and British super car manufacturers. B467 Harefield Road B467 Park Road M25 Woodstock Drive Warren Road Vyners School Western Avenue A40 Hounslow Twickenham Swakeleys Drive Helford Road Vyners School is situated in the popular town of Ickenham, near Uxbridge in Middlesex. Just a short distance from Central London, there are excellent transport links by road, rail and the London underground. The nearest mainline railway station is West Ruislip, with underground stations at Ickenham and Hillingdon on the Metropolitan Line within walking distance of the school. Tom Hughes Vyners is an exciting and engaging school. The experiences I had there helped me to embrace the opportunities I discovered when I arrived at university. During the past three years at Loughborough University I have embraced the incredible sporting environment and developed a new passion for rugby league. I was chosen to captain the first team for two of my three years. I have also represented Wales in the student World Cup, reaching the semi-finals, and have recently been selected for the Great Britain side which will tour South Africa in September. I have no doubt that the success I have had can be attributed to the positive sporting experiences I had at Vyners, including the Canada Rugby tour, the dedicated teachers and the leadership skills I developed throughout my seven years at the school. vyners school Striving for excellence 16 Vyners School Prospectus

Learning at Vyners All students are expected to complete home learning to support their studies. Students should record their home learning in their Student Planner and parents should check the planner regularly, signing it each week. Tutors will check and sign planners each week. The Student Planner To assist students in organising their learning they are issued with a Vyners Student Planner. The planner is much more than just a home learning diary. It contains a great deal of important information about the school and students should have their planners with them in every lesson. Parents are encouraged to make comments if appropriate and to use the planner as a method of communication with the school. Public Examinations It is school policy that all Year 11, 12 and 13 students are entered at GCSE/BTEC/AS/A2 for all subjects in which they have followed a course. The only exceptions to this are when Heads of Subject believe that a student will not achieve a pass because they have failed to complete a compulsory element of the course. In these rare circumstances parents will always be informed of the decision to withdraw an entry. Meeting the needs of all students Vyners welcomes students of all abilities from the more able to those with specific learning difficulties. We use prior data from primary schools and other school-based assessment to help us identify students abilities and likely progress. We continue to provide a range of support for our more able students and aim to: identify the more able students across all subject areas provide opportunities within and outside the curriculum to challenge and develop the abilities of those identified as more able students provide an appropriate curriculum for the more able child make staff aware of the abilities of more able students and of the provisions available for their support provide dedicated and targeted support for students who aspire to attend Oxbridge and other leading universities 05

Pastoral Care The pastoral system aims to ensure that students derive full benefit from the education we offer and is an integral part of school life. Students are divided into all-ability tutor groups and are supported by a dedicated form tutor. Behaviour and Discipline Any large community needs a set of clear guidelines to help ensure there is a calm and purposeful environment in which to work and learn. The Vyners Rewards and Consequences system is founded on the values of: Community Aspiration Respect Endeavour The tutorial system for each year group consists of Tutors and Year Leaders. These members of staff are the people that the students meet with most frequently and therefore have considerable influence upon each student s personal development and academic progress. Tutors build strong relationships with tutees so that the welfare of each individual is addressed and given support when it is needed. In addition to the traditional tutor system all tutor groups belong to one of six houses; Cheshire, Fry, Gell, Huxley, John Miles and Windsor. It is through the house system that we encourage students of all ages to collaborate and form friendships with students in other year groups Vyners School operates a zero tolerance approach to bullying. Students are encouraged and expected to report all incidents and parents can be assured that the school will investigate such incidents swiftly and effectively. The school s Anti- Bullying Policy is available from the school office. Our Behaviour Policy sets out, in detail, how general discipline is maintained in the school. This is achieved principally through the pastoral curriculum and is firmly based on positive reinforcement. A rewards system of merits and achievement awards further enhances this. Vyners School does not tolerate inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour and students are constantly reminded about the standards of behaviour expected. A copy of the school s Behaviour Policy is available from the school office. Vyners is a community with shared values and a clearly identified ethos. Religious Education is delivered as a discrete subject at Key Stages 3 and 4. Each year group has regular assemblies supported by a theme for the week. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of the RE programme and collective worship provided. 06

Student Life at Vyners Vyners School is committed to providing a planned programme of CEIAG for all students in Years 7-13 in partnership with EBSI Innovation in Education. Careers Education Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) All young people need a planned programme of activities to help them make the right choices and manage their careers throughout their lives. Schools have a statutory duty to provide CEIAG in Years 8-11 (1997 Education Act, 2015 Statutory Guidance). Students in Year 9 receive careers advice prior to making option choices for Key Stage 4. CEIAG lessons are provided for KS4 and 5 students. All Year 11 and Sixth Form students are offered interviews to help them decide their future. Our Careers Advisor attends parents evenings and assemblies to advise on the choice of options available to students. Students are encouraged to use the extensive CEIAG Services and to consult Careers Staff; parents are welcome by arrangement. Dr Malhi oversees the Work-Related Learning programme. Health Education A co-ordinated programme of sex education, both formal and informal, is delivered to all students when appropriate. It is related to the age and gender of students. It is dealt with in a sympathetic and sensitive manner, with group discussions taking place in an atmosphere of mutual trust, respect and confidence. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own behaviour and moral viewpoint. A full policy is available from the school office. School Meals A cashless cafeteria provides hot and cold meals and snacks at breaktime and lunchtime. We operate a cashless system which can be topped up by using squid online. Full details of the system are issued to all parents of new students. Students may bring a packed lunch which is to be eaten in the dining area or Quad. Details about the provision of free school meals are available from Ms Frances Webb, School Office Manager, and are available on our website. Work-Related Learning Vyners has significant links with the community through arts activities, sports, voluntary work and many other areas of school life. We see the school as an extension of the local community, and encourage students to be involved in work outside the school. We are continually developing links with a wide variety of employers and alumni so that all students in Years 9-13 have the opportunity to visit employers to broaden their horizons. Opportunities for work experience are made available to all Year 12 students and, if appropriate, a small group of Year 10 students. 07

Attendance at Vyners It is Vyners policy to maintain excellent attendance. Whilst some absences, such as for illness, are quite unavoidable, we find that students with a full attendance are more confident and more successful in their studies. How we monitor attendance: Parents must inform the school immediately a student is absent at the beginning of each day of absence. Parents of any student who is absent with no explanation will be automatically contacted. Continued and frequent absences, with no satisfactory explanation, will be referred to the Education Welfare Officer. Random attendance checks will be operated during the day to deter unauthorised absences from lessons. Saturday detentions will operate on a half-termly basis for students involved in unauthorised absences. Rewards will be given for good attendance and where a marked improvement in attendance is achieved. Parents are not permitted to take children out of school for holidays within term time. The school cannot and will not authorise absences for holidays. Research constantly tells us that children who miss days at school are disadvantaged. School Uniform Students in Years 7-11 are expected to wear full school uniform. The uniform is very smart and distinctive, and upholds the value we place on high standards at every level in the school. Students are proud to wear their uniform and are excellent ambassadors for the school. Students in the Sixth Form have a smart dress code which reflects a general business look, appropriate for their role as lead learners in the school. A detailed uniform list is available on our website and is also to be found in the Student Planner. The School Day Students can be in school from 8.30am to 5.00pm for lessons, independent study and community activities. The daily timetable is: 8.15 am Arrival at school 8.30 am Registration and Tutorial 8.50 am Session am Session am Break am Session 3 12:25 pm Session pm Lunch 2.00 pm Session pm Enrichment Time (Voluntary) The library is staffed until 4.00pm every day. Students may work in there until then. After 4.00pm, any student who is being collected by parents must wait in Student Reception. The school cannot accept responsibility for students after 5.00pm, unless they are taking part in a supervised sport, drama, music, dance or curriculum activity. 08

Vyners School Policies Equal Opportunities Vyners aims to embrace the needs of all students and to provide: A broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum relevant to the needs of each individual Maximum possible access to and stimulus within the school curriculum An educational environment where no student suffers adverse discrimination on the grounds of educational, physical, ethnic, religious or social circumstances. Communications All parents and students new to the school are asked to sign the Vyners Home/ School Partnership. This document sets out what parents and students can expect from the school and details the responsibilities of both parents and students. The intention of the partnership is to ensure that the basis for supportive relationships between home and school are established. Charging Policy for Activities Some learning and educational activities during term time will incur a voluntary charge to parents, but no student will be excluded from the activity if a contribution is unable to be made. An activity may have to be cancelled if insufficient contributions are made. Payments for some activities can be made by instalments. Child Protection Mrs Foster, Assistant Headteacher, and Dr Malhi have special responsibility for child protection. The school has a responsibility for ensuring that the children in its care are protected from abuse and, in the case of suspected abuse, they will ensure that the appropriate LA procedures are followed. Access to student records and other information Parents should contact the school if they wish to visit the school and/or see the following: Further information relating to the Curriculum Any agreed school policy documents The document has no legal status. Friends of Vyners (FOV) The Friends of Vyners are a group of parents and staff who work together to provide a number of social activities throughout the year and support many school events such as Open Evenings and productions. One of the core aims of FOV is to help raise funds for the school and through this fundraising, support the running of the school mini-buses and purchases which would otherwise not be possible. In 2015 the Three Peaks Challenge event raised over 20,000 for the school through the collaboration of parents, students and staff. All parents are automatically members of FOV and we welcome anyone who is able to provide a little time to help support their child s school. 09
