1 FAAS 3219 Moving Image Workshop 動 態 影 像 工 作 坊 (2013/14 Term 1) Class Time: Thursday, 2:30 6:15pm Class Venue: Room 301, Cheng Ming Building, New Asia College I Course Description The course is designed to explore the concepts, aesthetics and techniques of moving image in digital format from both academic and studio perspectives. Both technical and aesthetic issues will be addressed. Aesthetic issues encompass concept, relationship of sound and image, video installation and historical context. Technical topics include techniques of cinematography, non-linear editing, scene visualization and other related topics. Non-linear editing and compositing software will be introduced to illustrate the principles and techniques and to produce the projects. II Learning Outcomes After completing the course, students will be able to: 1. create time-based digital images exploring visual elements such as points, lines, forms, colors, and symbols, in a digital environment; 2. capture ideal video image and sound with digital video and sound equipments for rough cuts and further editing; 3. express abstract and fictional narratives through digital video and sound with a well-planned structure; and 4. make good use of and have good understanding of different digital media which can be integrated in digital moving images. 4 language and structure of Cinematic Narrative - Basic editing skills (III) Week 10 7 Nov Critique of Assignment TWO All works for presentation Week Nov Individual tutorial and editing practice Rough cut of Final Assignment ready Week Nov Final Critique All works for presentation Week Nov Final Critique All works for presentation Assessment Assignment 1 Multi-channel video Students should experiment equipment for multi-channel artwork as much as they can in workshops and develop a piece of multiple projection installation or multi-channel narrative work with duration more than 3 minutes. The content of the narrative should start from a story, a series of images, a piece of music or a research paper. Students should also pay extra attention to the spatial arrangement and device chosen for artistic creation and be able to illustrate the development from the orignal reference. Assignment 2 Single-channel video Students should start this project from choosing a soundtrack (music, dialogue or monologue) about 3 to 4 minutes long and make good use of production and post-production skills for further developing the soundtrack and creating appropriate image. The video could be fictional, non-fictional, or structural visual experiment. Students are expected to present also his/ her concepts and treatments clearly in critique. Final Assignment Students should make a video artwork, multi-channel or single-channel, for demonstrating his/ her understandings of the mediums, showing creative ideas of using the chosen mediums, and reflecting his/ her learning in the creative process.
