Module 4 objectives The aim of this module is to provide the student with the methodologies and tools to fully migrate the candidate applications and data to the target cloud system Note: due to intellectual property reasons, the logotype of UCBL must remain in all utilisation of this course content, as well as the note copyright DUNOD mentioned in some slides with figures.
OVERVIEW Part 1: Motivation and challenges for migrating applications Part 2: Methodology of migrating applications to the cloud Part 3: Case studies Transversal part: Communication
Migration to the cloud: roadmap PART 1: Motivation and challenges of migrating applications
PART 1 OVERVIEW 1.Why migrate to the cloud 2. Opportunities due to migration to the cloud 3. Barriers to migrating to the cloud
In order to try to answer this question, we will consider two perspectives; based inter alia on a case study of the migration of an enterprise to the cloud 1 Company just as a user Company with an information system division A company whose business is not IT will focus on the heart of business and employ computer skills (accounting, human resources, courier, planning, etc.) The company does not care about the infrastructure that is behind if it meets certain criteria related to cost, availability, etc. 1 A. Khajeh-Hosseini, D. Greenwood et I. Sommerville, Cloud Migration: A Case Study of Migrating an Enterprise IT System to IaaS, Cloud conference
For a company who information technology is not the heart of the trade Opportunities: The company can be interested in migrating to the cloud for different reasons: The cost: The migration to cloud infrastructures and solutions improve expenses and income management whether on the user side or finance staff It facilitates the management of the treasury, since the migration to the cloud requires little or no initial investment and billing is monthly, minimizing the variability of expenses related to the consumption of electricity Reduction of software costs: the company only pays what it consumes and will be able to provide save funds for future innovations
For a company who information technology is not the heart of the trade Opportunities: Extension of the lifetime of existing applications: by transferring existing applications to cloud platforms, companies extend applications lifecycle and do not longer care about constraints related to infrastructure. Therefore, it overcomes the obsolescence of certain applications Availability and services: Elastic resources: necessary material resources can be adjusted according to fluctuations in the company's activity On demand access to data / applications Access to mobile applications Green IT: one can observe a reduction in energy consumption by deploying thin workstations
For a company who information technology is not the heart of the trade Opportunities: Security: the data storage is outsourced to provider platforms and remains accessible if workstations are crashed Organizational growth: the new product will meet a lot of needs and thus gain greater market share
For a company who information technology is not the heart of the trade Barriers: Interoperability problems: a company may be reluctant to delegate some of its services to Cloud providers because of doubts about their ability to do it How to ensure end-to-end service quality and continuity when a part is delegated to the Cloud? These are interoperability problems that the company must be very vigilant
For a company who information technology is not the heart of the trade Barriers: Deterioration of customer service and service quality: according to the case study cited above 1 Managers and IT support engineers are likely to become dependent on cloud service providers and lose control of their applications. They may require additional resources to perform the migration and manage unexpected problems They risk becoming dependent of the cloud provider to resolve hardware and network problems and may spend more time on tasks as they are not accustomed in their work environment This can cause deterioration in the quality of services that they will no longer be able to control 1 A. Khajeh-Hosseini, D. Greenwood et I. Sommerville, Cloud Migration: A Case Study of Migrating an Enterprise IT System to IaaS, Cloud conference
For a company who information technology is not the heart of the trade Barriers Location of data: The dematerialization and digitization of data on physical storage sites can lead to data fragmentation and their distribution over various countries This can break the laws and regulations of the country in terms of data protection In case of instability of the Internet, the company will have problems to access to their services Users do not know where their data is stored and they therefore have no traceable ways to find them. The transparency of cloud providers in this area is generally not systematically enforced Very often, companies seek to ensure security and confidentiality of their data in their own systems located within their walls. The risk of losing control over their data should be examined carefully because it may be unfounded
For a company who information technology is not the heart of the trade Barriers Companies have service level agreements that bind them to their clients. The outsourcing of their IT applications as cloud services, implies legislation problems when there is recourse Companies may also be constrained by certain requirements related to their activities that may be inconsistent with cloud computational and storage models The Internet latency is not suitable for all IT applications. The concern about the availability and service response time can be barrier The company's client may not agree to migrate their data to the cloud infrastructure
For a company who information technology is the heart of the trade Opportunities Innovation and lightened budget: The staff in charge of information systems will now be able to focus on innovation and IT businesses They can also delegate all operational tasks on servers and IT infrastructures to cloud providers and reduce thus considerable expenses Enhanced status: Managers can improve their status in the organization if they can make the migration to the cloud. The latter is complex and has strong strategic implications Opportunity to handle new technologies, allowing various involved employees to leverage their competences in new areas and potentially reach new positions of responsibility
For a company who information technology is the heart of the trade: Opportunities Improved job satisfaction: IT support engineers can benefit from Cloud infrastructures that provide them opportunities to put aside old functions that consume a lot of time and to address new challenges of cloud administration They can participate in added value tasks, solving customer problems This is made possible in this infrastructure where service providers are responsible for maintenance Developers benefit from the migration to the cloud because they can be involved in IT system supports by conducting, for example, system performance Marketing and sales can also benefit from migration by offering new products and services that better meet customers needs in terms of scalability more easily than an internal data center
For a company who information technology is the heart of the trade Opportunities Opportunity to develop new skills: Engineers will handle new technologies that will be required in the future and practicing cloud administration Sales and marketing department will have more experience in the development and launch of new products and services Resources are abstract and undifferentiated: In cloud environment we deal more with details and performance results rather than the technical specifications of the equipment used The material can change and improve. It is no longer necessary to become familiar personally with the details of a given dynamic resource
For a company who information technology is the heart of the trade Opportunities Quick adaptation and innovation: Setting up servers requires a few days to a few minutes It is possible to assemble information infrastructures and required technologies, on demand for the purpose of any experience or initiative The deadline for placing on the market of innovations is reduced, and unsustainable projects are quickly discarded Efficiency: Cloud resources are not dependent on devices and are not tied to a location A dedicated server for each application is no longer needed: the virtualized resources may reside anywhere
For a company who information technology is the heart of the trade Barriers Changes: IT professionals need to learn new skills and invest in a great transformation of development tools. The job may be profoundly transformed Loss of power and resources: the first risk might be staff downsizing due to the outsourcing of tasks delegated to the cloud Loss or destruction of data: The risks may relate to losses related to problems with operations and management of cloud, to a lack of data backup in the cloud or finally to undeleted data With the geographical distribution of possibly exploded data, it is necessary to find all concerned parts what can be a complex task
For a company who information technology is the heart of the trade Barriers Malicioususe: Unauthorized access to data and the risks of wrong authorization must be taken into account An error at this level can cause problems in the management of rights; so a user can be assigned access rights to data when it should not It may result from this situation the various problems that can be imagined, such as access and dissemination of sensitive data or just data loss
For a company who information technology is the heart of the trade Barriers Deficiency in APIs and interfaces: APIs must be secure because they are essential to provision, management, orchestration and monitoring running processes It is therefore vital that these interfaces include authentication, access control, encryption and a regulated monitoring of the activity
