1 University of Mary A.S. to B.S. in Biology 2+2 Transfer Guide T he University of Mary and have partnered to offer the Seamless Transfer program. Now, it s even easier to step from a two-year program into your dream major! The Seamless Transfer program allows students to work towards their bachelor s degree from the University of Mary while simultaneously earning their associate s degree from. Students who successfully complete their Associate of Science degree with the required U-Mary pre-requisites at can seamlessly transfer to the University of Mary and complete their Bachelor s of Science in Biology in only two years. The biology major at the University of Mary provides students with a thorough, relevant foundation of knowledge in the biological sciences. The Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree program is designed to prepare students for a career as a professional biologist or for entry into graduate school or professional school. The diversity of electives offered by our expert faculty allows students to tailor the major to their specific interests. Students who so desire can choose a concentration within the major in the areas of biology education, wildlife and conservation biology, or a preprofessional area including pre-medicine, pre-dental, prechiropractic, pre-optometry, pre-podiatry, pre-veterinary, pre-physician assistant, or pre-pharmacy. CAREER OUTLOOK + Biology Teachers Employment of high school teachers is expected to grow by 7 percent from 2010 to 2020, slower than the average for all occupations. Overall growth is expected because of declines in student-to-teacher ratios and increases in enrollment. However, employment growth will vary by region. Employment of middle school teachers is expected to grow by 17 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Growth is expected because of both declines in student teacher ratios and increases in enrollment. However, employment growth will vary by region. Although overall student enrollment is expected to grow, there will be variation by region. Enrollment is expected to grow fastest in the South and West. In the Midwest, enrollment is expected to hold steady, but the Northeast is projected to have declines. As a result, employment growth for high school teachers is expected to be faster in the South and West than in the Midwest and Northeast. High school and middle school teachers must have a bachelor s degree. In addition, public school teachers must have a state-issued certification or license. The median annual wage of high school and middle school teachers was $52,595 in May The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $34,990 and the top 10 percent earned more than $83,230. Zoologists & Wildlife Biologists Employment of zoologists and wildlife biologists is projected to grow by 7 percent from 2010 to 2020, slower than the average for all occupations. More zoologists and wildlife biologists will be needed to study the impact of population growth and development on wildlife and their habitats. However, demand for zoologists and wildlife biologists in local, state, and federal government agencies, such as the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, will vary based on the budgets for these agencies.
2 Zoologists and wildlife biologists need a bachelor s degree for entry-level jobs, but a master s degree is often needed for advancement. A Ph.D. is necessary for most independent research and for college teaching jobs. The median annual wage of zoologists and wildlife biologists was $57,430 in May The lowest 10 percent earned less than $35,660, and the top 10 percent earned more than $93,450. Preparation for Graduate or Professional School Students who major in biology in order to prepare for graduate or professional school will have a wide variety of opportunities for employment. These opportunities are dependent upon the type of graduate or professional school the student chooses to pursue. Check out the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) for specifics on different career paths. The OOH can be found at + Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, Edition.
