3 women who have been physically or sexually abused by their partners report higher rates of a number of important health problems. E.g.: they are 16% more likely to have a low-birth-weight baby. They are more than twice as likely to have an abortion, almost twice as likely to experience depression; globally, 7% of women have been sexually assaulted by someone other than a partner. The evidence that does exist reveals that women who have experienced this form of violence are 2.3 times more likely to have alcohol use disorders and 2.6 times more likely to experience depression or anxiety.

5 Partnership involves different sectors and agencies working collaboratively to deliver intimate partner and sexual violence prevention programmes in a coordinated way. As a result, effective prevention will require the planning of actions together, and the sharing of funding or other resources according to the strengths and abilities of each partner. WHO, 2010

6 The key agencies which are likely to include: the health sector; those working with children and young people, including the educational sector; the police and criminal justice sector; local government; communities; nongovernmental organizations.

7 Studies of the relationships between intimate partner violence, health status and use of health care by women have shown that women who have experienced violence are more likely than non-abused women to seek health care, even if they do not disclose the violence. 9 The guidelines are aimed at health-care providers because they are in a unique position to address the health and psychosocial needs of women who have experienced violence. Health professionals can provide assistance by facilitating disclosure; offering support and referral; providing the appropriate medical services and follow-up care; or gathering forensic evidence, particularly in cases of sexual violence. They also seek to make health-care providers and policymakers more aware of violence against women, to encourage an evidence-informed healthsector response, and improve capacity-building of healthcare providers and other members of multidisciplinary teams. 13 A series of tools is necessary in order to prepare the Police Forces, attorneys and social and health officers helping and supporting the victims of IPV. Such tools must, in an early stage, be capable of activating listening and understanding abilities and, in a later stage, provide adequate support in reconstructing a life strategy.

15 From the AGIS Victas Project aimed to studying operative strategies to guarantee that treatment offered to victims was respectful of their needs and of their rights; to the AViCri Project - Attention for Victims of Crime focused on training Police Force Officers with regard to approach to victims; the training content and methods were subsequently adopted by CEPOL (European Police College); and now the MuTAVi Project - Multimedia Tools Against Violence proposed to develop interactive training multimedia tools, in order to improve the skills of Operators in this field in managing approach, help and care of IPV victims.

19 Research phases The research was divided into three steps: analysis of information in a sample of EU Member States; quantitative and qualitative research on European Union member States; quantitative research with a questionnaire conducted in Italy.

20 Training packages The design of standard training packages is based on: recommendation of VictAS Project; results of the research; experience and knowledge of European partners; information coming from other European countries already active in the field of victim s approach; knowledge acquired during a workshop on neighborhood police and victim s approach held in New York, at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, in January 2008.

21 MuTAVi Project Multimedia Tools Against Violence Daphne III Programme , JLS/ /DAP/AG Aims of the project Development of a training package, including multimedia tools, specifically and mainly aimed at Police Forces, but also at health service workers and civil society volunteers, also thanks to the contribution of NGOs operating in this field, in order to guarantee a correct approach and a more adequate care for IPV victims.

23 Main objective of MuTAVi Project Improve the skills of workers in their approach to victims, with particular reference to IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) victims, through the development and implementation of a series of multimedia training tools. The MuTAVi Project training tools have been developed as Web-Based Training (WBT) so as to ensure the larges diffusion and easy access to everybody interested in developing skills in dealing with IPV victims.

24 The learning path is subdivided into a total of 9 training modules, focusing on significant issues related to the theme of IPV, plus simulations that identify the correct approach of Police Force Officers. The Course has a total length of 17 hours and 45. All lessons, complemented by videos, video-lessons, interviews, sketches and downloadable attachments for further study, have a testing section that can be freely used by each trainee to assess his/her level of learning, after taking each module.
