Getting started Part I

Getting started 1 Getting started 1.1 What is Remote Desktop Manager? 5 Remote Desktop Manager is a small application used to manage all your remote connections and virtual machines. Add, edit, delete, shared, organize and find your remote connection quickly. Compatible with Microsoft Remote Desktop, Terminal Services, VNC, LogMeIn, Team Viewer, Ftp, SSH, Telnet, Dameware, Window, VMware, Virtual PC, PC Anywhere, Hyper-V, Citrix, Radmin, Microsoft Remote Assistance, Sun Virtual Box and more. It's only a wrapper and a manager around existing technologies. There is no proprietary protocol implemented in this application and all the communication are established using another library or software. Where to start if I don't know any anything about remote connection? If you never used a tool like Remote Desktop Client (mstsc.exe), VNC or anything other tool and you want to connect to a remote machine, we suggest you to use LogMeIn. It's very easy to setup and it's free. Supported protocols: RDP (Remote Desktop) VNC (Virtual Network Computing) ICA (Independent Computing Architecture) SSH (Secure Shell) Telnet (TELecommunication NETwork) HTTP/S (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Rlogin (Rlogin) RAW (Transmission Control Protocol) More tools System Requirements Minimum Requirements Windows 7, Windows P (SP2 or later), Windows P Embedded, Windows Vista, Window 2003 or Windows 2008.NET Framework MHz processor 512MB of RAM 1024 x 768 screen resolution 10+ MB hard drive space

6 Remote Desktop Manager 64-bit support Remote Desktop Manager is working on all the 64-bit version of Window starting from Windows Vista SP1. It was not tested on Windows P 64 bit. Terminal Services and thin client support Remote Desktop Manager can be installed without any problem on a Terminal Server and on a thin client 1.3 Creating a new session Overview The first thing to do before you can use Remote Desktop Manager is to configure at least one session. There is many types of session and you must know at least the basis of each type before you can use it. Remote Desktop Manager support these session types: Microsoft Remote Desktop (RDP) Microsoft Remote Assistance VNC (UltraVNC, TightVNC, RealVNC and embedded) LogMeIn Team Viewer FTP (Explorer, Filezilla and WinSCP) Window Putty (SSH, Telnet, RAW and rlogin) Dameware Mini Remote Control Radmin Viewer Citrix enapp (ICA) Symantec PC Anywhere Microsoft Hyper-V Microsoft Virtual PC Microsoft Virtual Server Microsoft Windows Virtual PC Sun VirtualBox VMware Player, VMware Workstation, VMware ESi and VMware vsphere Cisco VPN client SonicWall Global VPN client And many more by installing other addons Creating a session from the context menu The easiest way of creating a new session is from the context menu. On the main application window, simply right-click Sessions and select the menu Add. You can specify the session type or a template to initialize a new session. the session property window will prompt and you will be able to customize your settings.

Getting started 7 Creating a session with drag and drop It's possible to drag and drop an.rdp file in the main screen. Remote Desktop Manager will ask you if you want to import the content and create a new session or create a session linked to the configuration file. It's also possible to drag and drop the LogMeIn desktop shortcut to create a LogMeIn session. Creating a session by importing the configuration It's possible to import a session by using the Import Computer Wizard or directly from a compatible application. You can get more information Here 1.4 Configuring a session Each session type has his own specific settings, but some setting are common.

8 Remote Desktop Manager Name: This is name of the session, it will appear the session list. By default it often the host used for the remote connection : Contains a description in plain text, rtf or from a web site. Group / folder: This will be used to organize the session in different folder in context menu or in the tree view. You can find more information here Display: Allow the session open embedded in Remote Desktop Manager or not (externally). It's also allow the user to specify the monitor if the application allow that and if it's opened externally. Security Group: In the Enterprise edition, the administrator can assign a security group to a session and allow only a sub set of user to see this session. VPN tab page: This section is used to configure an optional VPN connection to open before the main session is opened. Sub connection tab page: This section contains the sub connection linked to the main session. It's possible to share some variables like the host name. this is useful when you want to connect to the same host with different protocol. For example, the main session could be an RDP session you can also configure a sub connection to access different share folder on this machine or an FTP site. Information tab page: This section contains different type of information related to the session, for example the machine specification or some useful notes. It's also possible to add custom information. Events tab page: This section can contains a script or a command line to execute before or after the connection is established. It could be used to prompt to the user a more information or to update a log on an external server. Advanced tab page: This section contains more advanced settings related to the session like the

Getting started 9 internal data source ID and session ID. These values can be used to invoke Remote Desktop Manager in command line to open the session or to do a batch modification. 1.5 Connecting to a session There two possible connection modes to open a session: From a configured session in the data source With quick connect Depending of the mode, Remote Desktop Manager can use a completely different application or library. This might explain why something result differ from mode to another. For example the extarnal mode for Remote Desktop will use the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client (mstsc.exe) and the embedded mode will use the Active. Configured session You can open the session by double clicking the session in the session list or using the context menu. The session will use the default settings if it's double clicked and for more option use the context menu. From the menus it's possible to specify different connection option like: Full screen Embedded / External mode (click here for more details) Console or admin mode with the RDP protocol Force prompt of credentials Open with or without the configured VPN

10 Remote Desktop Manager Quick connect By using the quick connect button, It's also possible to open a session ad-hoc by specifying the destination and the session type. It's also possible to create a template and use it for the quick connect. you will specify the default setting you want and Remote Desktop Manager will merge them with the host specified. 1.6 Embedded vs external mode Remote Desktop Manager supports two types of sessions and some are not available depending of the selected session type: External

Getting started 11 Embedded / tabbed External mode A standalone session launches the administration session in the native application. This mode usually launches the native application. For example, the native application for RDP is mstsc. exe. Most of the time, it's possible to specify the destination monitor. Also, depending of the session type, the opened session view will be updated if Remote Desktop Manager can detect that a session is opened. Embedded / tabbed mode An embedded session runs within the confines of the Remote Desktop Manager window and shows tabs at the top of the window. This mode centralize the opened session in the application and it's easier to switch from one to another.

Remote Desktop Manager Group / Folder The group can be specified In the session properties. By filling this field with the group names you want, Remote Desktop Manager will generate the corresponding tree structure. Use the \ to create sub group. For example: Office\Canada\Montreal This will create 3 nodes in the tree: Office Canada Montreal

There is two types of template: Local template Shared template The local templates are saved on the local computer and it's not available to other user. The share template are saved in the database and can be used by more than one user. It's possible to define more than one template with the Enterprise edition Templates are available in the option dialog or with the application menu File->Templates 5.5 Options Dialog Remote Desktop Manage contains many option pages like : UI options Start / close options Quick connect Search filter Trayicon / taskbar setting Installation path / default path Templates Security settings

Other features Security All passwords stored in the application database are encrypted using a strong encryption algorithm. This mean that if somebody can access the data directly from the database, they won't be able to read it. If you choose the option store password locally, Remote Desktop Manager will use the same mechanism than mstsc.exe (Microsoft Remote Desktop client) and the password will be stored in the Window Credential repository. You can access it from "User Account" in Windows. You won't be able to see the password and it's encrypted directly by Windows. What is Credential Manager? Credential Manager allows you to store credentials, such as user names and passwords that you use to log on to websites or other computers on a network. By storing your credentials, Windows can automatically log you on to websites or other computers. Credentials are saved in special folders on your computer called vaults. Windows and programs (such as web browsers) can securely give the credentials in the vaults to other computers and websites. For information about saving credentials in a vault, see Store passwords, certificates, and other credentials for automatic logon. Reference Tips It's possible to enforce the security by: Using SQL Server and give restricted user access Enabling the encryption of the session in the Advanced tab page (Encrypt configuration in the data source) Don't save the password in the SQL Server database to prompt the credential on the first connection 5.7 Import sessions (Enterprise) Using the wizard It's possible to import your computer list from difference sources. These sources include: Network neigbouhood Your current domain (multi domain will be supported later) List of computer from a file The wizard is available in Enterprise edition an can be found in the application menu File-> Import Computer Wizard

38 Remote Desktop Manager Importing from another application It's also possible to import your session list from an existing application. Your configuration must not be encrypted to allow Remote Desktop Manager to parse the content. The list of the supported application is: RoyalTS ( mremtote ( visionapp Remote Desktop ( Terminals ( This feature can be found in the application menu File-> Import From Other Application

Other features Wake-on-LAN (Enterprise) Wake-on-LAN is an Ethernet computer networking standard that allows a computer to be turned on or woken up by a network message It's only supported in the Enterprise edition of Remote Desktop Manager. The destination motherboard must support it and it's must be enabled. It's must a be in the local area network and not connected by a VPN. Configure Remote Desktop Manager You must add the MAC address in the session configuration. The field can be found in the Information tab and in the sub tab Computer. The field name is MAC and you must enter a valid MAC address. You can try to use the Discover button try to determine automatically the MAC address. If it fail, you will have to find it manually. Use Wake-on-LAN If the setting are correctly configured, you can invoke the Wake-on-LAN from the session context menu and It's be found in the Session Tools->Wake On Lan menu.

Remote Desktop Manager Offline mode (Enterprise) The offline mode allow a connection to a read only copy the the data source when the live database is unavailable. It's can be used when the VPN connection is down or when a user is working from a disconnected network. It's only available with the SQL Server data source and it must be enabled in the setting. Remote Desktop Manager will automatically switch to offline mode when the application is unable to reach the data source. The user can activate the offline mode manually by using the menu File-> Go Offline. It's possible to reconnect to the live database when the connection is back online by using the menu File-> Go Online 5.10 Connection log (Enterprise) With the Enterprise edition and the SQL Server data source it possible to monitor the opened session for all the users. This is the connection log and it's available per session from the context menu.

Other features Attachment (Enterprise) With the Enterprise edition and the SQL Server data source it possible to add attachment to a data source. The document is stored in the database Batch Edit (Enterprise) The batch edit is used to change settings to multiple session in one operation. It's available in the session context menu.

Remote Desktop Manager User management (SQL Server) With the SQL Server data source, it's possible to create users and give them security access. By default all the SQLServer SYSDBA user are administrator. The security group are used to classify the session and restrict the access to some user. You must be administrator of the database (not Remote Desktop Manager) to create user and assign rights. Steps: Create the required users Create the security groups Assign the security group to the session Link the security group to your users Notes: Session without a security are considered as public.
