Atkins Danmark ANNUAL PROFILE

CONTENTS Preface Part of something bigger Building future infrastructure Design & Build More to us than meets the eye Key Figures and Responsibility A great place to work When you think of Atkins, you may think solely of infrastructure, but as you will learn from this year s annual profile there is more to us than meets the eye. Eva Rindom, Managing Director, Atkins Danmark 23

PREFACE Atkins annual profile 2013/14 presents you with another year in Atkins. A year in which our employees have continued their efforts to ensure technical excellence and successful collaboration with clients, partners and with other parts of Atkins. In 2013/14, Atkins continued building future infrastructure. By working on our clients large and small infrastructure projects, we help form the future travel experience for people travelling in Denmark. However, our effect on international travel experience also grows as the global collaboration in Atkins achieves continuous focus from all busi ness units. When we apply our skills on global pro jects in e.g. Scan di navia, the UK, North America and Dubai, and simultaneously bring in specia lists from other parts of the world to sup port us on our local projects, we know that we are increasingly becoming part of some thing bigger. PEOPLE DEFINE ATKINS On the current design and build project setup, we believe our internal global collaboration to be a benefit for Atkins in Denmark, as it enables our employees to draw on Atkins experience worldwide and ensure the delivery of innovative solutions to our clients. As always, we have been exploring new potentials for development and growth. Our past as rail consultants often makes our clients think of us only as a provider of rail infrastructure services. However, our skills and services extends further than being on top of rail, and in this year s annual profile, you will find a story on Atkins design of a new application system for construction and environmental permits. Thus, when you think of Atkins, you may think solely of infrastructure, but as you will learn from this year s annual profile there is more to us than meets the eye. Our people define us This years annual profile puts special focus on the key ingredient of our business: Our people. Thus throughout the annual profile, you will find people stories in which Atkins employees share their thoughts on key projects and products. This provides you with an opportunity of hearing their personal story, and emphasises the great importance we put in our people and in their contribution to our work. I hope you will enjoy reading this year s annual profile, and that you will find the story of our projects and our people inspiring. Eva Rindom, MD Have you noticed something different? This year s annual profile is published primarily in a digital version, hereby supporting our aim of reducing our environmental impact. 4 5

PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER When you think of Atkins in Denmark, you usually think exclu sively of the Danish or gani sa tion em ploying 450 peo ple. However, what most people forget is that Atkins in Denmark is in fact part of something much bigger a global organisation with nearly 18,000 people. In the past years, the internal collaboration across Atkins units all over the world has increased. This is first and foremost supported by initiatives aimed at working more seamlessly across the Atkins group driving the one company thought. From North America to our Global Design Center in India, we are all benefitting from our shared global experience and knowledge. So when thinking of Atkins, you have to look beyond the 450 people in Denmark to get the full view of what Atkins can deliver and achieve. Global expertise and local knowledge The global collaboration in Atkins, allow our local team to apply global competences to deliver our Danish projects. We find the right match of skills for every technical discipline and a proper solution for every issue our client or we might encounter during the project. However, our size in the local market still makes it possible for us to manage projects locally, hereby preserving the close communication and collaboration with our client, holding local knowledge of e.g. norms and standards intact and understanding our clients political or responsibility agenda. The global colla boration does not only extend to a wide inter national context. Collaboration in Scandinavia has increased throughout recent years and the Danish, Swedish and Norwegian business units are supporting each other in strategic and operational issues on a day-to-day basis. This knowledge sharing is crucial as the three countries operate in very similar markets, share similar languages and are thus easily able to capitalise on experiences and make necessary resources available across the three countries. Developing our people Our people are given oppor tu nities for international training and development through the application of their skills in an international context. For instance, compared to other business units in the Atkins group, Atkins in Denmark holds extensive knowledge within rail electrification and ERTMS. Our colleagues in North America currently benefit from these skills in connection with the composure of a bid within rail electrification on which several Danish employees are assisting from either Denmark or in the USA. At the same time, different oppor tu nities arises for our people in Denmark to deve lop their skills by learning from specialists all over the world. Atkins has a very strong bridge knowledge sharing network, where experts from across the world are sharing knowledge of new approaches and new development. Another example is when we learn from our UK colleagues experience with design and build project set-up, which has been applied in the UK for several years before the trend came to Denmark. Resently, we send one of our project directors to the UK to gather lessons learned on the subject and bringing it back to Denmark. The more seamless international resource and knowledge sharing is increasingly supplemented by a global prioritisation of strategic projects across all Atkins business units. The Atkins group Atkins in Denmark is part of the global Atkins group employing nearly 18,000 people and operating in 200 different locations. The company was established in the UK in 1938 and is one of the world s leading design, engineering and project management consultancies. 6 7

Electrification Danish rail expertise to major American light rail proposal Being a country, characterised by long distances North America has never been known for its electrified railways. So when Atkins in North America needed electrification experts for the preparation of a large proposal to design, build and maintain a 25 km light rail line in the State of Maryland, they turned to the experts in Denmark. Expertise for major UK offshore wind farms PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER The new light rail line runs with mixed traffic east-west between Bethesda and New Carrollton is planned to have 21 stations. Atkins delivers consultancy services for Fluor Enterprises, who are competing with three other teams to win the project. The final proposal is to be delivered to Maryland Transport Authority October Atkins in Denmark s is contributing with electrification experts responsible for the detailed design of the overhead catenary system, power supply, grounding and project management. We have some really talented people in Denmark, who are experts within their field. This is a definite advantage, says Project Manager Gitte Vinther. Global level cooperation Preparing the proposal is an extensive process including Atkins people from all over the world from Hong Kong in the East to San Francisco in the West. It is an international project, so at our weekly phone meetings we have approximately 20 people with various dialects. How ever, the time dif fer ence is challen ging. When we leave for the day in Denmark, our colleagues in North America have just started their workday. It s challenging and it's fun Naturally, the project includes various technical considerations and regulations that differ from Danish electrification projects. Furthermore, the way the client thinks is different. What we think is incredibly smart, doesn't necessarily appeal to the client and vice versa. It s challenging and it's fun, Gitte says. The recommendation from the Danish team entails solutions which is expected to optimize the power supply and thus resulting in great cost savings. It has been challenging to win the whole team over, but the opportunity to save a lot of money during construction and maintenance was a persuasive argument. The new light rail line will run close by The University of Maryland. To ensure that the magnetic fields do not interfere with the university s sensitive technical equipment, Atkins contacted two highly specialised experts from Atkins in Sweden to conduct EMI-studies. If Atkins is awarded the project this could result in more work in the future for the Danish team in North America. I am more than ready to pack my bags and leave for the States. It s opportunities like these that make it great to work in an international company like Atkins, Gitte says. Cost of Energy (CoE) in off shore wind must come down considerably in order for the industry to be compe titive with other energy sources. One way of doing this is through standardisation. Atkins has been chosen to design five substations for DONG Energy to help meet this target: Race Bank, Walney and Burbo Bank extension projects. 8 9

BUILDING FUTURE INFRASTRUCTURE BUILDING FUTURE INFRASTRUCTURE Recognising infrastructure as the main driver for growth, politicians have allocated big sums for an upgrade of the Danish infrastructure. With investments like the agreed Togfond in hand, infrastructure owners are partnering with consultants, suppliers and contractors to bring the vision of better infrastructure and growth in society to life. Infrastructure a driver for growth Infrastructure is the driver for growth. The large investments allocated to expand both the road and rail infrastructure network will create growth in the short term through the creation of jobs and in the long term as effective road and rail networks are a necessity for a society s and a country s continuing growth. As one of the largest infrastructure consultancies, Atkins plays a crucial role in helping society build the infrastructure of tomorrow and hereby the future society. Demand for rail is growing everywhere and it is being driven by urbanization. High-speed rail is considered one of the key elements in meeting the demand for better, faster, cheaper and a more reliable transportation. Similar in Denmark, the vision of the one-hour model is cutting travel time between the big cities. But in a country the size of Denmark, highspeed rail lines cannot be restricted to high-speed trains alone as we see elsewhere. On Denmark s first high-speed rail line between Copenhagen and Ringsted, Atkins is leading the team of consultants in setting future standards for high-speed rail. We have designed the line to run on ballasted tracks and support mixed rail transport, which differentiates the Danish highspeed rail line from most high-speed rail lines in the world. New approaches in design, engineering and delivery In Atkins, we innovate and deliver new approaches every day, when we support our clients in delivering Denmark s rail modernisation programme, design new motorways, or build user-friendly web- solutions making the work processes easier for the people who rely on the systems. We keep an open mind to think innovatively and to foresee the next step in the work we deliver when building future infrastructure. In the signalling programme the world s first nationwide re-signalling scheme we combine our in-depth knowledge of signal control on railways with new technology. We build on our experience to shape the foundation and plan the implementation of new future proofing technology. No project is too big nor too small As in all other aspects infrastructure is never stronger than its weakest link. In Atkins, we know that minor issues can generate the biggest problems for our clients. If a cycling lane needs to be enhanced by a few meters to offer safe journey for children or if a part of a bridge needs to be looked after for weaknesses in the steel construction or if a detail needs to be assessed, Atkins engineers are ready to help no project is too big nor too small

New double track in Southern Jutland Næstved by-pass road Improved future regional traffic The rail line in the southern part of Denmark is vital for the freight and pas senger traffic between Scandinavia and central Europe. Atkins is designing bridges and tunnels for the future infrastructure with the construction of a 7 kilometres by-pass road near the City of Næstved. BUILDING FUTURE INFRASTRUCTURE The 20 km stretch between Vamdrup and Vojens is one of the last single track lines on the main Danish rail network. By establishing a new electrified double track and speed upgrade of the existing track, greater capacity and reductions in potential delays and congestions is offered to the future users of the rail line. Atkins solves the task in a joint venture with Grontmij. Atkins is responsible for the project management and railway consultancy, including the design of the overhead catenary system, interlocking system, performance surveying, noise and vibration calculations along with the main schedule and stage plan. The by-pass road will remove some of the heavy traffic from the city centre. Therefore, when the by-pass road opens for traffic in 2016, it will improve the regional traffic surrounding the city and the traffic environment in the city. The project is at its final stage; most tender packages have been put out to tender, and the construction work has been initiated. Atkins and the Danish Road Directorate tendered the bridges not only as general contracts but also as design and build contracts in order to meet the current requests from contractors of being more involved in the entire process

BUILDING FUTURE INFRASTRUCTURE Joining a project like the Copenhagen- Ringsted rail line gave me an opportunity to take on a new role as project manager for two sub-projects while also being responsible for the coordination of the interface agreement with two major rail programmes: the signalling and electrification programme. Haukur Johannesson, Senior Consultant at Atkins As the overall project of designing the new rail line between Copenhagen and Ringsted grows in size, the consultancy team lead by Atkins, is taking on more assignments to help Rail Net Denmark design and set future standards for highspeed rail in Denmark. Since the beginning in 2011, the project has grown considerably - especially for the consultancy team helping Rail Net Denmark to design Denmark s first high-speed rail line. Some of the newest sub-projects have the purpose of connecting the new line to existing tracks near Ringsted and at Vigerslev with a level-free interchange section, and performing a TSI conformity assessment for Rail Net Denmark s existing overhead catenary line. Setting new standards The Copenhagen-Ringsted rail line is the first high-speed project in Denmark, and therefore The Copenhagen Ringsted rail line...is picking up speed the project team is required to continuously supplement the existing technical norms and standards in order for the project to comply with current high-speed regulations. While setting new standards for high-speed in Denmark, the project team is also working closely with the signalling and electrification programmes to ensure compliance in the design and planning. Thus coordination and exchange of information is an essential part of the work. Sitting close to the client at the project office in Brøndby, makes the collaboration with the client and the rest of the project team more seamless in the day to day work. We solve problems on the spot, exchanging new information as it appear and ensure that interfaces to other projects like the signalling or electrification programmes are in compliance with the agreed terms, says Haukur Johannesson, Senior Consultant at Atkins. 3D the preferred design tool Early in the project, Rail Net Denmark wished to introduce 3D modelling. The consultancy team s work highlights the benefits of 3D modelling for visualization purposes and as a design tool. Shortly after the introduction, 3D modelling had proven its value in the infrastructure design project. The Copenhagen-Ringsted project is the first of Rail Net Denmark s projects to include 3D modelling in the design of tracks, structures Skitse: Banedanmark To me, the size and complexity of the project is part of what makes it so interesting. Large projects offer new challenges, and it is great to have a job which offers you these kind of opportunities Haukur Johannesson, Senior Consultant at Atkins and clearance profiles. The 3D models are also applied to perform clash tests against the structure design from the contractors. In my opinion, 3D design is an incredible tool for identifying and solving challenges and potential conflicts before initiating the actual work. Moreover, I believe that it helps strengthen the interdisciplinary understanding internally in projects, says Lasse Jensen, CAD coordinator at Atkins. When the 10.4 billion project opens in 2018, the new double tracked highspeed and electrified passenger rail line will offer a better timetable with more departures and shorter travel time than today. From an international perspective, the new high-speed line is part of the trans-european network connecting Scandinavia to the rest of Europe

The Frederikssund Motorway Improved motorway ready by 2015 Multidisciplinary renewal project on the Køge Bugt line BUILDING FUTURE INFRASTRUCTURE After a temporary pause, the work on the extension of the Frederikssund Motorway has been taken over by the Dutch contracting consortium, TBI Infra B.V. and Van Gelder B.V. The new consortium has chosen to continue with Atkins as consultant on the design and build project. Thus Atkins is providing bridge and road engineering consultancy services on the extension of the 4.4 km motorway. The motorway will open for traffic in the fall 2015 as originally planned. Once finished, the extension will reduce traffic on the heavily congested motorway and ensure an improved travel experience on the four lane motorway. Foto: Aerodan Luftfoto for Vejdirektoratet To achieve synergy and cost savings, Rail Net Denmark has buntled a number of renovation activities on the Køge Bugt S-train line in one single project. As a result, this is the first major multidisciplinary renewal project on the S-train line and the largest electrification renewal in many years. Atkins has delivered the definition phase report and is currently working on the program phase. This involves all rail disciplines, environment, RAMS, bridges and structures, health and safety. Trust and open dialogue is essential To minimize cost and save time, Atkins team is working in close cooperation with Rail Net Denmark to ensure that any advice given is easily transformed into action, hereby enabling a smooth work flow. Despite a tight time frame, Atkins has fully managed to deliver. The definition phase report consists of 200 pages and has the quality I expected. Our team has been extremely impressed with the involvement, Atkins has shown in this project, says Martin Lose, Project Manager at Rail Net Denmark. Every two weeks, Rail Net Denmark s project management team visits Atkins for a status meeting and they even have work stations established at the Atkins office to enable them to work from there when necessary. We discuss issues as they arise. Trust and open dialogue are key elements of any project. Jørgen Rejnholt, Project Director We discuss issues as they arise to ensure mutual trust and open dialogue, which are key elements of any project, says Jørgen Rejnholt Petersen, Project Director at Atkins. We ask for creative answers to heavy issues. We want constructive solutions and alternatives and we want Atkins to provide the arguments for which alternatives to choose. We are solving the task together, but Atkins is the expert, says Martin Lose

DESIGN &BUILD In recent years, the infrastructure market has seen a shift towards large multidisciplinary design and build projects. In Atkins we find it important to constantly respond to market trends and to adapt to our clients needs. Thus we were among the first to take part in a design and build project, hereby immediately increasing our experience with working on this project set-up. DESIGN & BUILD In the past years, we have worked on design and build projects like Tender Package 40 including various technical disciplines on the Copenhagen-Ringsted rail line, the Frederikssund Motorway and the valley bridge in Nordskoven. The key ingredient is collaboration For the infrastructure consultants, the market shift towards design and build assignments alters previous working methods. After having worked as client advisor for years and delivered consultancy services directly to the clients, we are now increasingly working for the contractor. In Atkins we believe that good collaboration between the contractor and the consultant is one of the key ingredients to successful project delivery on design and build projects. An aspect to this is agreeing and working towards common goals. One of the projects that have forested this common goal approach is the large design and build project on the Copenhagen-Ringsted rail line, where close collaboration with the contractor forms the backbone of the project. Project experience employed interchangeably Our previous experience and our continuous work as client advisor adds valuable knowledge to the design and build projects. On the other hand, our understanding of the contractors needs and working conditions on design and build projects is applied on traditional client advisory projects. The important knowledge we build on both project types will contribute interchangeably to project delivery excellence on every project Atkins is involved with. We help you find the optimal solution We strive to encourage out-of-the-box thinking and innovative approaches in project delivery. As a partner, we challenge our contractor s solution and ask them to challenge ours to help support the shared goal of finding the optimal result and the best price. Our extensive experience with the provision of consultancy services ensures the contractor a positive project experience and of course a project win to begin with

Working as a team - the backbone of a successful design and build project DESIGN & BUILD Working on large infrastructure design and build projects put consultants in a new role to a new type of client. Teamwork is essential to succeed. When Torsten Valentin Sommer was assigned the role as Atkins project manager on the large design and build project, Tender Package 40 (TP40), ensuring close collaboration between the two parties was one of his primary focuses from the beginning of the project. The large contract on the building of bridges and earthworks on a section of the 20 new rail line between Copenhagen and Ringsted is delivered as a design and build project between MJ Eriksson and Züblin as the contractor consortium and Atkins as the consultant. From the beginning of the project, focus was on ensuring positive communication and collaboration between the consultants and the contractor consortium. Atkins has more than 40 engineers and designers on the project including 7 people working at our Global Design Center in Bangalore, India. Thus in a project this size, it was important to me to ensure that our project team at Atkins fully understood our common objective with MJ Eriksson and Züblin to deliver a successful project, says Torsten. A formal set-up and informal social events As Atkins Project Manager, Torsten helps Atkins role in the project On the 18.3 km section, Atkins work entails bridges, sheet piles, roads, substructures, drainage, soil engineering, construction work and RAMS (reliability, availability, maintainability, safety). All the design is carried out in 3D. ensure the coordination of the interdisciplinary teamwork between the five technical disciplines: structures, road, rail, drainage and soil engineering on the project, as well as the 3D design. To Torsten, the most important aspect in supporting teamwork towards a shared goal is the fundamental contractual setup. It was necessary for me to ensure a proper formal set-up to support this. This was done with the contracting entity in the initial contract negotiation phase by including bonuses and fines for contractor and consultant for deadlines and milestones met and unmet, respectively. This helped foster a shared interest from both Atkins and the contractor consortium in reaching the milestones, Torsten explains. The method has proven successful, and the first many milestones have been met, resulting in the first sod being cut four months prior to originally planned. However, collaboration has not only been supported through the formal set-up but also by arranging informal social events for the project team. We are arranging a day of go kart-driving and dinner for everyone in the project team at both Atkins and the contractor consortium. This will help us foster an open and honest dialogue in the project, and hereby enable us to minimize mistakes and errors on the project making the overall project a success, Torsten says. 21

Valley bridge in Nordskoven Respecting our partners conditions Collaboration on design and build project does not only entail close dialogue and mutual understanding between the parties; it also demands respecting the conditions that your design and build partner might be working under and fit your solution to comply with these. When JORTON supported by Atkins won the project to design and build twin bridges of a total length of 500m in Nordskoven, Atkins needed to think creatively in our design, as JORTON s longest scaffold only covered one fourth of the twin bridges. Thus JORTON preferred a solution in which one fourth of a bridge was constructed at a time resulting in a total of eight separate constructions. In Atkins we matched our solutions to fit the needs of the contractor enabling JORTON to build the valley bridge with the current scaffold available to them. The project is currently at its final stage and despite the alternative approach, the bridges have been successfully build. The valley bridge is part of the motorway section going from Funder to Låsby through Silkeborg. DESIGN & BUILD Foto: Vejdirektoratet 22 23

MORE TO US THAN MEETS THE EYEtool MORE TO US THAN MEETS THE EYE Atkins is well known for delivering technical excellence on a wide range of infrastructure projects, but looking beyond the first impression you will find a variety of technical and professional expertise not directly related to infrastructure. This might not be obvious when you first meet Atkins. In Atkins, we are as multidisciplinary as the number of people we employ. Engineers, planners, biologists, IT developers, geographers and architects all hold different skills and expertise. Our aim is to exploit and activate this multi-skilled workforce Preserving natural surroundings Being an infrastructure consultant, many of our projects revolves around designing railways, roads and bridges, but infrastructure projects are so much more than this. For example, when we design a new railway or plan the alignment of a new motorway, environmental issues that disturb the natural to measure broadband speed, a new inhabitants need to be considered. Atkins digital system to apply for construction and biologists performs registrations of protected environmental permits or a system for the species like bats, salamanders and frogs in Royal Danish Air force to map dangerous affected areas and design new biotopes to obstructions during flights in low altitude, replace the ones that will be decommissioned user-friendliness is the main driver for the due to the infrastructure project. system success. Ambassadors for the citizens Another example is Atkins team of GIS specialists and IT developers who s capabilities are considered to be very strong. Atkins is often invited to work in international teams delivering complex systems for e.g. the European Commission and European agencies. As consultants, one of our key roles on the projects we deliver to clients from the public sector, is advocating for the citizens or end-user. User-friendliness is unavoidably the most important indicator of how the systems are received and applied after they have been launched. Whether it is an online More than just a traditional infrastructure consultant Therefore, when we say that there is more to us than meets the eye, we are asking our new and existing clients to challenge our multidisciplinary and multi-skilled organisation and ask what we can deliver before looking for other partners. Whether it is an infrastructure project, a digital system or an environmental assessment, our aim remains the same: to deliver technical excellence and professional expertise

Jeddah 'Wellness' vision From desert to vibrant city MORE TO US THAN MEETS THE EYE Transform 214 ha desert into a vibrant city with rich social and sustainable urban life. That was the challenge behind the Atkins-designed Prince Sultan Cultural Centre, a large-scale mixed-use master planning project, which will provide housing for 15,000 people in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Located in Obhur, north of Jeddah City, the masterplan for the project has been designed to stimulate 'social wellness', encouraging involvement from the whole community to pro- 26 mote physical and mental wellbeing. From any location within the area, people will be less than a five minute walk from a green open space. Atkins Design Director, Janus Rostock, says: We've developed a set of criteria to assess the plan against our 'wellness concept' and every element within the masterplan has to meet these. What we end up with is a city within the city of Jeddah a fully self-sustaining mixed-use development which supports a vibrant community and healthy, active lifestyles. The masterplan incorporates all the components needed for a strong community: residential, culture, healthcare, education, retail, commercial offices, exhibition and hospitality space and an integrated public realm network. At the centre will be a cultural centre which celebrates Arabia past, present and future. All the areas of expertise 'in house' The Danish architect team has played a significant role in the design development of the masterplan, which won the prestigious Cityscape award in the commercial and mixed-use category at the event in Jeddah Specialists from Atkins in the Middle East and Europe as well as our Global Design Center have been involved, including planners, architects, landscape architects, urban designers, transport planners, technical infrastructure and highway engineers. The client expects the project to be fully developed within the next 5-10 years. It is a great advantage to have all the relevant knowhow and specialists 'in house'. We can easily reach somebody with the appropriate knowledge Jaron Brender, Architect in Atkins Bergen Airport Analysing risks on simultaneous operations Atkins has performed risk analyses for the rail sector on numerous rail projects. But we strive continuously to look for new opportunities to apply the knowledge and experience, we gain, in other sectors and new clients. One example is when we apply our in-depth knowledge to perform a risk analysis for simultaneous operations at Bergen Airport for Avinor. This is just one of the projects, Atkins has delivered to Avinor, which is linked to the framework contract we hold with them. Avinor is responsible for planning, developing and operating the Norwegian airport network and operates in 46 airports in Norway. 27

Measuring your broadband speed Bredbåndsmåleren A GIS tool for construction permits. Byg og Miljø MORE TO US THAN MEETS THE EYE Lacking internet availability and speed, especially in the outskirts of Denmark, have been discussed broadly by the politicians. As a result the Danish Business Authority committed itself to provide a tool for citizens to measure their broadband speed online. Atkins GIS experts developed a crowd-sourcing solution, where citizens are requested to map their speed measurements in the online tool. Measure ment data are displayed visually in a digital map. In this way one citizen is sharing information on broadband speed in his local area with his fellow citizens. This makes it easier for the individual citizen to detect if their internet speed is below the average in the area. A similar tool has been developed for the internet suppliers to map the speed of their internet services. The Danish Government has decided to drive 80 percent of their public service communications onto digital platforms with the aim of reducing costs and improve efficiency. This has entailed a countrywide digital system for applying for construction and environmental permits. The easy-to-access online self service system covers 350 types of construction projects including listed buildings and seven types of environmental cases, and provides a common platform for all Danish applications send to the local authorities. Atkins GIS experts have incorporated maps into the programme with integrated drawing tools which enable users to easily identify the location linked to their application. They can follow a step-by-step guide to making an application and compose the required documentation prior to submission. The drawing tools allow users to sketch the project and reveal any restrictions on the specific location that may prohibit a permit, for example environmental protection areas. The map will help users realise that by moving the location of the project slightly, they will avoid such restrictions. The whole application process can be navigated, managed and tracked online, generating both time and cost benefits for the applicants citizens and professionals and authorities, and help to achieve the Government s efficiency target. The system was published in April The value of the system is its ability to guide the applicants through the process. The result is an easier and less time consuming process for applicants and equally for the local authorities, who will use less time on requesting information and guiding the applicants Morten Bødtkjer, Development Manager, Atkins 28 29

Historic restoration Bringing a 115 year old steel bridge back to life Our reputation is built on trust. Our clients trust us with critical projects. Our partners trust us with sensitive information. Our employees trust us with their careers. And if we are to maintain that reputation, we all need to play our part and demonstrate that we continue to deserve that trust, every day, in everything we do. From Atkins Code of Conduct Foto:Gedved Egnsarkiv MORE TO US THAN MEETS THE EYE When Horsens Municipality, as part of the re-establishment of Gudenåen passing, decided to dig out a 115 years old steel bridge, Atkins was commissioned to complete a checkup of the old bridge. In the future, the old bridge will be used as a footbridge crossing the stream in the scenic nature area. The excavation of, what was probably the highest steel bridge in Northern Europe 115 years ago, is a result of the State s Water Plans, which subscribes that streams like Gudenåen must be cohesive. This was the starting point for bringing Gudenåens course of stream back to its original state and in this connection excavating the old steel brigde. The bridge had at that point been hidden in a large embankment for 100 years. When the project team removed the soil from the embankment, they were surprised to find the bridge to be in a much better state than expected. Therefore, they called in Atkins bridge specialists to assess the strength and stability of the bridge. It s one of those rare projects that you don t get very often. And it s one that I will remember for a long time. We have assessed the strength of the bridge by comparing the calcu lation regulations for track-bearing bridges in 1897 with calculation regulations for footbridges in 2013, says Anne Gitte Klifforth, Bridge Engineer and Project Manager. In addition to the assessment, Atkins also prepared the tender material for the bridge renovation, which is to be conducted once the bridge has been completely revealed from the embankment. When the work is finished in the summer 2015, the bridge will be a new tourist attraction on the already popular Bryrupbane trail

We are proud of our record in meeting this challenge, and recognize that it requires continual focus. People are the heart of our business. We actively invest in them and their education. We train our specialists in the latest technology, our graduates in the basic rail disciplines and our project managers in PRINCE2 and how to be a better team leader. We also emphasise a sound working environment and the health of our employees through a good work-life balance. I started my career with Atkins this year. For a newly educated engineer without much practical knowledge and a lot to learn, Atkins has provided a good balance between on the job training and independent project work.
