The school was established in It continues to operate as a non-denominational Christian school governed by an independent Board of Directors. Enrolling students of various abilities, the school exists to provide a challenging academic program that includes a biblical perspective on life and learning. Accreditations Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS) Florida Kindergarten Council (FKC) Associations Florida Association of Academic Non-Public Schools (FAANS) Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) Florida Vocal Association (FVA) Florida School Music Association (FSMA) The Student Body Lakeland Christian School provides classes for students in four-year-old kindergarten through grade twelve. Total school enrollment at the beginning of the school year was The elementary school enrollment, which includes K4 through grade five, is 434. Secondary school enrollment in grades six through twelve is 634. There are 92 students in the senior class. School families represent over 170 different local churches. The student body is made up of a cross section of social and economic groups. Faculty The men and women who comprise the Lakeland Christian School faculty are Christian teachers who desire to help students learn from a biblical perspective. They come from a wide variety of educational backgrounds and work together to help prepare students for life. There are 6 administrators, 31 elementary, 50 secondary, and 5 part-time faculty members. Teachers are required to maintain current professional certification in their fields. Thirty seven percent of the faculty hold master s degrees. Thirty eight percent of the teachers have taught at Lakeland Christian School for ten years or more. Overall student to faculty ratio is 15:1. Elementary Curriculum In grades 1-5 we offer an accelerated program and flexible grouping. In lower elementary, students are placed in clusters and have a main academic teacher. In upper elementary, students are placed in a homeroom and will attend a math and reading class that meets their needs. Students with mild learning disblilities are assisted by certified teachers in the Special Programs Department. Students participate in the Foundations and Framework reading program. This is a extensive instructional reading program that uses literature to develop skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and written expression. Saxon Phonics is used in kindergarten through second grade. The K4-K5 students begin to picture numbers in their minds as they play with numbers and increase their number sense. Primary Mathematics or Singapore Math is used to equip our 1st 5th graders with a strong understanding of mathematics and critical thinking skills. Rocket Math is used to increase math fact fluency and automaticity. Social Studies and inquiry-based science are taught in every grade. Classes in art, music, physical education, Spanish, and library skills are also offered for essential components of child development. Electives for 4th and 5th grade include Spanish, choir, bell chimes and missions. Middle School Curriculum The middle school program encourages character development and focuses on biblical principles for building life relationships during this time of physical and emotional changes. The curriculum reinforces the basics of the elementary program and prepares students for the rigors of high school academics. Math, science, language arts, social studies, Bible, and physical education are taught at each level. A unique program in the Secondary School is the RISE Institute with its focus on STEM learning and the INTEL research model for enrichment in science and engineering. Student electives include band, choir, piano, rise, Spanish, music, computer, journalism, living skills and art. All Middle School students are required to have an IPad which is used in the daily instructional program. High School Curriculum Although the high school program offers both general and college preparatory diplomas, over 90% of the students choose a college preparatory track. Curricular offerings include Advanced Placement, honors and dual enrollment courses. Available electives include computer, art, drafting/ AutoCAD, home economics, music, and journalism. All students must be enrolled in six academic subjects each semester. One credit is equivalent to 36 weeks of instruction consisting of five, 47-minute periods per week. All courses are divided by semester. Core academic classes have comprehensive exams each semester.
2 Graduation Requirements Students receiving a College Preparatory Diploma must earn 26 credits: 4 units of English; 4 units of mathematics (Algebra I and above); 3 units of science (with lab component); 4 units of social studies (including U.S. History, World History, Government, and Economics); 2 units of foreign language; 4 units of Bible; 2 units of physical education (including Life Management Skills and Personal Fitness); 1 unit in performing arts; and 2 elective units. Students receiving a general diploma must earn 24 credits. Graduation requirements are similar to the College Preparatory Diploma with the following exceptions. Only one unit in foreign language is required; four math credits must be earned including Algebra I and Geometry. Only one additional elective is required. Grading Scale and Class Rank All courses are used in computing the Grade Point Average. Students in grades 9-12 are ranked on a weighted, cumulative G.P.A. Advance Placement and Dual Enrollment courses are awarded an additional quality point. Honors and Dual Enrollment courses receive an additional 0.5 quality point. All seniors earning a College Prep Diploma must take both the SAT and ACT. Students earning a general diploma are required to take either the SAT or ACT. Currently, there are thirty-one competitive teams in twelve different sports. A complete vocal and instrumental music program is also provided. A unique piano program offers private lessons for students in second through twelfth grade. A keyboard lab is also utilized by students. Other extracurricular activities offer leadership opportunities through The National Honor Society, Math, English, Music, Science and Foreign Language Honor Societies, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, school publications, drama, and on-campus clubs. A special event for seniors each year is a six-day class mission trip.
