Fl College Labor Camp Yields Another Harvest Now in its sixth year, Labor Camp continues to draw alumni, employees, and friends of Florida College out into the heat for some truly grueling work all for love of the school. It s very much like camp, said first-time volunteer Trey Harper, except the games are How much can you shovel? or How much paint can you not get on your shirt? The camp was created with the purpose of tackling various work projects around the campus. This year s tasks included: construction of a wall in the main classroom of the Business Building; a complete interior makeover of Hailey-King building; power-washing of several buildings; reconstruction on the Riverwalk; tree and stump removal; and new lighting on the sign facing Bullard Parkway. A record 47 workers enlisted this year, to log a total of 1,016 labor hours. The amount of money that the week s effort saved the College was estimated at $36,000. That brings the total of Labor Camp s six-year yield to $135,000. Camp Volunteers Labor camp volunteer Trey Harper 3

4 CCC Coach Checks off 800th Win On August 31, Coach Vickie Denny knocked out her 800th career win when the Clearwater Christian College Lady Cougars volleyball team defeated opponent South Florida Community College with a 3-0 sweep. This win put Coach Denny in an elite group of coaches; only ten active coaches in the NCAA have met their 800th win, only four of which are in smaller, private, junior, or community colleges. With over 30 years of coaching experience on various levels of competition, Coach Denny has spent the Lady Cougars Coach Denny last twenty-one years as acting head coach at CCC. Her overall college coaching record: 800 wins/247 losses. Her experience and expertise on the court is an important component to the teamwork and success of the Lady Cougars. Of course my 800 victories would not be possible except for the great young ladies the Lord has directed to our teams over the years, said Coach Denny. NSU to Research Oil Spill Impact Nova Southeastern University is using part of a $10 million block grant from BP to conduct research on the Gulf Oil Spill s impact on the marine ecosystem. Given the magnitude and seriousness of the Deepwater Horizon spill, I'm very pleased that NSU researchers have had successful proposals funded by the BP block grant, said Richard E. Dodge, NSU s Oceanographic Center dean and executive director of NSU s National Coral Reef Institute. We are making concerted efforts to better understand potential and actual impacts to our economically and biologically valuable marine ecosystems, such that we can be better prepared when spills reoccur. Richard Dodge SLU Partners with U.S. Coast Guard Saint Leo University is one of only 10 institutions nationwide to be approved by the U.S. Coast Guard for participation in its new Maritime Law Enforcement College Partnership Program.
