1 Rex School/Community Council October 16, 2015 In Attendance Beverley Bowman, Joyce Camp, Dena Dunlap, Jennifer Etheridge, Walter Hart, Harriet Jaworowski, Lisa Johnson, Kavin Ming, Barbara Palmer, Robert Prickett, Jennie Rakestraw, Andrew Vorder Bruegge, Jane Turner I. Welcome and Member Introduction II. Council Purpose a. Update on NetSCOPE and NetLEAD grants Lisa provided an update on both grant programs; NetSCOPE submitted its final performance report that was shared with the group (grant officially ended June 30) and NetLEAD is in a no cost extension year to focus on building model sites. We have found success in sustaining key initiatives, but want to ensure we continue to work as a collaborative to support the needs of school, community, and university partners. Data points from NetSCOPE implementation: 56 Professional Development Schools, Partner Schools, and Content Area Assemblies 14 transformed initial teacher preparation programs that include a year long internship, an average of field hours, and experiences with diverse learners 4086 participants in professional learning opportunities 684 teachers and faculty trained in foundation and advanced mentoring practices A goal remains in terms of measuring teacher preparation effectiveness; difficult to attain necessary data, but hopefully working with the SC DOE to create a system b. Began as a group to build and manage the Partnership Network and Corps of Mentors. While this will remain a part of our work...what are our other vision/goals as a collaborative? The group brainstormed areas in which the Rex School/Community Council should work over the coming year: college readiness, collaboration with TransformSC, digital instruction (interaction, engagement, individualized, learning management systems), literacy, rural and/or high poverty needs, teacher development/recruitment, innovation and research, induction and support, program evaluation (pre and post implementation). III. Mentoring (update from Jane Turner) Jane provide an update on the successful implementation of the transformed Foundations in Mentoring training. With an integration of current research, teacher evaluation criteria, and feedback, the two day training is ready. Upcoming dates to remember (registration and location information at

2 March 9 10: SC Mentor Training December 8 9: Train the Trainer January 26: Mentor Training Trainer Update Goals for future work include having mentors be trained as ADEPT evaluators as well (so they know how to mentor and coach). In addition, CERRA will be updating the SC Mentoring and Induction Guidelines. Dean Rakestraw suggested also looking a developing a training for administrators to examine their role in the mentoring/induction process. IV. Professional Learning Opportunities a. Certificate and graduate programs Lisa shared handout with current graduate and certificate programs available at a cohort rate for Partnership Network/OEC districts (see attached) b. Professional development structures and brainstorm A discussion occurred about possible ways to support professional learning needs as well as provide options for PD choices (versus mandated). See attached chart for information shared. Lisa will compile data and share with those who might be able to offer the PD. V. Open Discussion/Announcements a. January 19, 2016 Explore 21 st Century Learning in South Carolina at Winthrop University (interactive demonstrations and speakers from Transform SC, SC Dept. of Education, and Winthrop University) b. Needed: Instructors for EDCO 202. Supporting Exceptional and Gifted Learners in the General Education Classroom Master s degree or higher; available during the day c. Joyce Camp, Winthrop University Instructional Technology Center (ITC) Director, noted that the textbooks currently up for adoption are housed in the ITC and encouraged members to have their teachers examine and provide feedback. d. Walter Hart, Educational Leadership Program Director, shared news of the upcoming offering of an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership to start summer of fall of Look for more information coming soon. VI. Establish annual offerings (every year offer the Coaching Basics ) for those more popular events. Schedule so it is tagged onto OEC principal meetings (for location/scheduling purposes) Use the structure of what the state is doing for Reading Coaches (state wide training then local PLC) Align with school goal
