2 Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities Founded in 1896, the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU) is the nation s oldest state-based organization devoted to higher education. PACU is a voluntary association of institutions drawn from all sectors of the Pennsylvania higher education community. All member institutions are chartered by the Commonwealth and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or by other national accrediting agencies. The association has the following membership: The four Commonwealth State-Related Universities; The Commission for the Universities of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (CUPSSHE); The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP); The Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges (PACCC). Now in its second century of service, the Association continues to support its members as they provide access and choice to all those seeking educational opportunities of the highest quality. MISSION The Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities serves the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by promoting higher education. To enrich the well-being of the people of Pennsylvania, the association fosters dialogue among the institutions of higher learning, collects and disseminates information about higher education, enhances the understanding and image of higher education and when practicable advances collective positions relating to higher education. Establishing a unity of spirit and cooperation among the various institutions and sectors while nurturing the appropriate diversity that is one of the glories of higher education in Pennsylvania is rightly a part of the PACU mission. PACU is a voluntary member organization; it seeks those mutual interests and commonalities among constituent sectors and variety of institutions that can be developed for the benefit of higher education and the people of Pennsylvania. STRUCTURE PACU is governed by a six-member Board of Directors. A Chair and Vice Chair/Secretary-Treasurer serve as officers of the Association. The Board may appoint, as necessary, committees composed of member presidents and/or other staff members to address such items as governmental and public relations, regional and annual meetings, and special topics deemed relevant and appropriate to the concerns of Association members. 1
