2 Dear Student, is committed to acknowledging academic achievement. By so doing, we attract many exceptional students whose motivation, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to excellence help build our reputation as one of the nation s top public research institutions. In support of our strong commitment to individual excellence, the University continues to develop partnerships that provide scholarship opportunities for students who excel. Our current fundraising focus on growing scholarship endowments is part of an ongoing effort to increase both merit- and need-based scholarship resources. Currently 9 percent of all financial aid awarded at (including loans, grants, and workstudy) is in the form of scholarships. Keeping a education affordable for families of modest means by increasing scholarship support is the top priority of the University s ongoing For the Future: The Campaign for Students. This is a campaign for students to enable future graduates to realize their full potential as individuals, sustain their families, advance their professions, and contribute to our country s strength. While values all students who bring a passion for excellence, the competition for scholarships available to first-year students is strong. This brochure provides an overview of opportunities currently available to first-year students at all campuses and within the University s academic colleges, as well as a glimpse of scholarship awarding beyond the first year. We extend our best wishes for success in your educational pursuits. Anna M. Griswold Assistant Vice President for Undergraduate Education Office of Student Aid anne rohrbach Executive Director for Undergraduate Education Undergraduate Admissions Office
3 > Scholarship Awarding at strives to recognize academic excellence and assist deserving students who might otherwise be unable to afford a college education. In this environment, where academic potential and the commitment to excellence are given priority, there is strong competition for scholarships. Each year, across twenty undergraduate campuses, Penn State enrolls more than 17,000 first-year students, about 25 percent of whom receive a University scholarship. The Office of Student Aid automatically gives scholarship consideration to all first-year students who are offered admission to the University. Campus and college awarding charts found in this brochure and on the Office of Student Aid s Web site ( studentaid) indicate campus and college application processes, eligibility requirements, contacts, and Web sites that students can reference to learn how to be considered for campus and college awards. > Facts about University Scholarships Approximately 4,400 first-year students receive a University scholarship. Thirty-nine percent of first-year scholarship recipients are at University Park, with the remaining 61 percent at other campuses. Both Pennsylvania and non-pennsylvania residents receive equal scholarship consideration. Eligibility is frequently based on both merit and demonstrated financial need. Financial need is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). First-year students should complete the FAFSA by February 15 for maximum consideration. Typical scholarship awards are $1,500 to $3,000 per academic year. Campuses, colleges, and other units awarding scholarships notify recipients by mail. The Office of Student Aid notifies students by . > Facts about Private Scholarships Many students receive scholarships from their high schools, community organizations, church groups, companies, and other philanthropies. One in ten first-year students receives private scholarship support. You can search and apply for scholarships through free, Web-based search engines such as those found at and
