You Have New Competition: Models That Challenge the Independent School Value Proposition Brad Rathgeber Executive Director - Online School for Girls

Learning Objectives Understand sources for new (or increased) competition to independent schools: public schools, charter schools, Understand personalized learning and potential benefits to the independent school community Identify ways in which the Admissions Office can partner with Academic and Operational administrators to position the school effectively for the future

Academically Rigorous Schools Deeper Learning Schools Personalized Learning Schools Online Schools

What is the typical value proposition for an independent school? How do we deliver on that value proposition?

Mooreland Hill School strives to create a unique environment in which all members, students and adults, exist in a learning community characterized by active and spirited engagement in academic, physical, and social pursuits Moral character, a strong sense of community, and an understanding of the responsibility of citizenship are stressed through the curriculum, community service activities, and a partnership among parents, students, and the school. The Hotchkiss School strives to develop in students a lifelong love of learning, responsible citizenship, and personal integrity. We are a community based on trust, mutual respect, and compassion, and we hold all members of the community accountable for upholding these values. Holton-Arms School cultivates the unique potential of young women through the education not only of the mind, but of the soul and spirit.

Because boasting a wide array of academic and non-academic programs and state-ofthe-art facilities are markers of quality, schools engage in an arms race of sorts against one another as they seek to bolster their reputations and be the best. Because this competition is predicated on adding costly items, it in turn drives up the tuition price. And having a high tuition often becomes a proxy for quality in the eyes of the schools and families. - Michael Horn, September 3, 2015

Tuition Has Risen at 3-4% Above CPI Data throughout from NAIS/DASL

Revenue from Net Tuition Increase Reliance on Tuition Revenue, Development/Alternative Sources Have Not Kept Pace

FTE Costs Increased as % of School Expense

Independent Schools National Productivity

Why has our overall student to FTE ratio decreased from 8:1 to 5:1?

Our reliance on traditional means for personalization has opened the door for public, charter, for-profit, and new independent schools to undercut our costs, while being able to deliver a personalized education program.

What is personalized learning?

Personalized Learning Teacher-Centered Lecture Classes Some Discussion Based Courses Student-Centered Enhanced Differentiation Some Student Choice Student-Driven Student Working To Meet Course Objectives and Competencies

Classroom Shifts Source: Education Elements

Station Rotation Model Content Instruction: Computer Collaborative Work: Application Teacher Led Work: Small Group

Flipped Classroom Classroom: Project-Based Learning, Content Reinforcement, Individual Help and Guidance, Group Collaboration, Summative Home: Individual Practice, Content Acquisition, Computer Feedback, Formative Assessment Assessments

Flex Model(s) Content Instruction: Computer, Choice 1 Teacher-Led: Small Group Learning Objective/ Competency Discussion Collaborative Work: Application Content Instruction: Computer, Choice 2 Teacher-Led: Interventions

With the teacher no longer responsible for teaching content, more time can be spent with more students on an individual basis. Capitalizes on what independent schools are best at knowing our students.

How Does This Impact the Admissions Office?

De-Emphasize Class Size as a Metric, Immediately

Partner with Academic Administrators On Institutional Change & Then Find Authentic Language That Speaks to Your Changes and Your Culture

We see three primary options for an independent school: adopting online learning as a sustaining innovation; launching its own disruptive innovation by creating an autonomous schooling model powered by online learning; and focusing so clearly on nailing a particular Job that the school is able to survive and thrive amidst disruption. - Michael Horn, September 3, 2015

From where I sit, it s time for independent schools to make a real commitment. Online learning can help us deliver on the promises we ve always made and, in many cases, can mitigate financial pressures as well. It s not a temporary "fix," it's part of our future. Jeff Shields, Net Assets, September 2015

Online Learning Can/Should Be a Part of the Solution Replace Low Enrollment Courses Expand Programs - Particularly Helpful for Smaller Schools Personalize the Curriculum Choices - Meet the Needs of Families Source: SSATB

Partner with the Business Office Understand the Challenges Specific to Your Market; Work to Address Those Challenges Together
