3 A Word from the President The University of Rennes 1 maintains close relationships with a large number of universities abroad and is an active partner in numerous major European programs, including 200 Erasmus agreements. Through proactive policies in international teaching programs and scientific cooperation, the University of Rennes 1 has made international openness one of its top priorities. Our three campuses welcome 26,441 students, including 3,428 international students. In this guidebook, you will find information about several Master s degree programs developed by our university which are taught in English. They target non-frenchspeaking international students. 6 4 Rennes and Brittany Rennes is the capital of the Brittany region in Western France. With its 400,000 inhabitants, dynamic economy, and several institutions of higher education, it is no surprise that Rennes has been marked by a growing emphasis on higher education and research and development. Over 60,000 students call Rennes home, and it is considered a dynamic, vibrant student city, with a wealth of traditions, historical monuments, festivals, concerts, and cultural events. Rennes central geographic location makes it easy for visitors to travel to the northern coast and its famous sites like Mont Saint-Michel, Cancale, Saint-Malo, and Dinard, as well as to the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Morbihan and the resorts of Quiberon and Carnac. The specificity of the program is to combine intensive French language courses with a comprehensive academic program in Management taught exclusively in English. Career prospects The main aim of the course is to provide students with the essential skills necessary to pursue a career as an International Business Executive. The Master s program develops students capabilities to succeed in a dynamic global business environment within international companies. Tailor-made for future managers, the program arms students with a panorama of up-to-date and indispensable «hard» and «soft» skills in International Management. Admission requirements A 4-year Bachelor s degree, evidence of English language proficiency. All students will be expected to sit a French proficiency test at the beginning of September. The results of this test will enable the professors to place students in classes corresponding to their level of proficiency (beginner, intermediate or advanced). Homogeneous groups will then be formed aiming at preparing students for the internationally-recognized French examination, the DELF, to be held at the end of the academic year. Students will acquire up-to-date knowledge and become experts in a field of specialization. The program is divided into two paths: the regular program and the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) preparation. The Master s thesis constitutes an essential part of the regular program. The CFA program is organized in collaboration with Bärchen, an institution specialized in CFA preparation. Great emphasis is placed on the development of critical analysis and innovative skills. Career prospects This program has been designed, with both academic and industrial positions in mind, so as to match recruiters' needs for high-level collaborators. Students graduated from this MSc Finance are nowadays either PhD students, junior researchers, lecturers, assistant professors or financial analysts, portfolio managers, asset managers, risk managers, financial engineers, quants, bankers, corporate executives and so on. Partners The program is supported by the Research Center for Economics and Management (CREM), the only research center dedicated to economics and management sciences in the western part of France. CREM is accredited by the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). Admission requirements A four-year bachelor degree, a first year in a Master degree majoring in Finance or in fields relevant for Finance such as accounting, economics, statistics, econometrics, mathematics and other branches of sciences, evidence of English language proficiency. The qualification creates an international network of professional and academic expertise and offers a joint degree in three partner universities (Tampere, Fribourg, Piemonte Orientale). The program offers education and laboratory research training in fine chemistry, green chemistry, organometallics & homogeneous catalysis, and molecular material science. It provides the necessary background for understanding recent and future developments of modern, multidisciplinary chemistry at the industrial and academic level. Every student will benefit from personal tutorial assistance, with communication in English, for effective integration in the course and immersion in the French society. The inclusion of French and technical English languages, French and European culture in the curriculum will strengthen the student s professional future and prepare the student for leadership roles in industry. Unique opportunities for training and mobility within the European Union (EU) are given by the active participation of Rennes 1 university in several networks with European universities. The program covers the main aspects of modern molecular chemistry and catalysis and provides for students who wish to pursue a PhD degree in France or EU with the requisite level. Career prospects Students can find a position as chemical engineer or research engineer in the following areas: bulk chemistry, fine chemistry, polymer chemistry, petrochemistry, pharmaceutical industry, automobile industry, fragrance, flavor industry, food processing industry. Research training of minimum 9 months is shared out over the two semesters (30 ECTS). European visiting professors and industry researchers participate in the teaching. Its main objective is to form skilled scientists in materials science together with an advanced knowledge in the use of large scale facilities for the characterization of high technology materials. In an international environment, it offers excellent academic and industrial opportunities to Master students. Career prospects The programme has started in After Mamaself, students work in industry or research institutions. Most of the Mamaself students pursue PhD programs in or outside Europe. Possible careers: research engineer in public or private research companies, responsible for production researches, R & D project manager, university professor. Mobility The two-year programme is split in 4 semesters: the first year (sem. 1 & 2) is entirely enrolled at one out of the five universities of the consortium, sem. 3 at a different university. Sem. 4 is dedicated to the Master thesis and can be carried out at any university or large scale facility or at partner institutions situated in Switzerland, Japan, India, the USA, and Russia. A visit is organised every year to the neutron reactor of Laboratory Leon Brillouin (LLB), CEA at Saclay, and Soleil the French synchrotron radiation source at Saint-Aubin, close to Paris. This visit represents the first occasion for Mamaself students to come in close contact with Large Scale Facilities. Summer school A 2-week summer school is organized for all Mamaself students in the beginning of the second year at the University of Rennes 1. Its objective is to obtain a wide background in exploring materials using neutron or synchrotron radiation. Status meeting The Mamaself status meeting is organized in Switzerland during the 4th semester and brings together all second-year Mamaself students and representatives of partner institutions. During the status meeting the students will present the preliminary results of their Master-thesis work. Additional scientific topics will be presented by specialists from research centres. 17

Applicants will be selected by the Mamaself Master Admission Committee, made up of representatives of the Consortium. Students must have a Bachelor (180 ECTS or equivalent) in Materials Science or related disciplines (chemistry, physics, geo-science, etc.), and good English competencies, e.g. TOEFL 210/550, IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. For each academic year the consortium selects a limited number of non-eu and EU students, who will receive a grant (see our website).
