Liberal Arts and Humanities The Commencement of Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities with Dr. Mamta Accapadi, Vice President of Student Afairs, Rollins College, Florida O.P. Jindal Global University O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) is a non-profit global university established by the Haryana Private Universities (Second Amendment) Act, JGU is established in memory of Mr. O.P. Jindal as a philanthropic initiative of Mr. Naveen Jindal, the Founding Chancellor. JGU has established five schools: Jindal Global Law School, Jindal Global Business School, Jindal School of International Affairs, Jindal School of Government and Public Policy and Jindal School of Liberal Arts & Humanities. The University Grants Commission has accorded its recognition to O.P. Jindal Global University. The vision of JGU is to promote global courses, global programmes, global curriculum, global research, global collaborations, and global interaction through a global faculty. JGU is situated on a 80-acre state-of-the art residential campus in the National Capital Region of Delhi. JGU maintains a 1:15 faculty-student ratio and appoints faculty members from different parts of the world with outstanding academic qualifications and experience. A new vision for the study of the Humanities An education in the liberal arts and humanities in our B.A. (Hons.) programme at Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities (JSLH) in collaboration with Rollins College, Florida, is the ideal preparation for an intellect in action. The range of perspectives provided by an education in the liberal arts leads to a diversity of understanding on the part of our students, thus preparing them for a life of personal and professional excellence. JSLH offers a space for the expansion of young minds in an interdisciplinary curriculum rooted in the social sciences and humanities - the first of its kind in India. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum, derived from the core values of the mission of the O.P. Jindal Global University, JSLH re-imagines the confines of traditional linear education for the needs of versatile global citizens. Our aim is to break down disciplinary boundaries and redefine what it means to study the arts and humanities in an international context. At JSLH, our distinguished faculty works to create world-class thinkers who are simultaneously innovators. We train students for intellectual mastery, democratic participation, self-expression and advanced life-long learning. Within this global framework, the B.A. (Hons.) includes an exciting opportunity to extend Jindal s liberal arts and humanities programme through an additional period of study at Rollins College, Florida, USA.
2 International Collaboration Rollins College, Florida Distinctive Features of JSLH A unique inter-disciplinary curriculum and study abroad opportunity in the USA at Rollins College, Florida: The foundation of our B.A. (Hons.) degree is the reconceptualisation of how the arts and humanities relate to each other alongside the transformation of those who engage in their study. The students will be trained in foundational aspects of the arts and humanities through core courses, while the electives will permit them space to develop their unique interests. JSLH faculty will foster and promote students scholastic and individual success. JSLH students at IGNCA (India Gandhi National Centre for the Arts) as part of Expressive Arts course field trip World-class faculty and global exposure: From our international faculty, drawn from premier universities around the world, JSLH students benefit from a rigorous training in inter- disciplinary liberal arts and humanities. In addition to Rollins College study opportunity, the curriculum will extend student horizons in knowledge-formation to produce innovative thought for a democratic trans-national future. Our endeavour is supported by regular public lectures and seminars delivered by eminent scholars, writers and distinguished sociopolitical practitioners from around the world. JSLH students visiting Hazrat Nizammudin Basti in Delhi as part of Inter-disciplinary course The B.A. (Hons.) in Liberal Arts and Humanities unites a uniquely global curriculum with the practice of internationalism. Our students will have the option to extend their pioneering Jindal education in association with Rollins College, Florida. Rollins mission emphasizes an inclusive environment, and the College s small size encourages close pedagogical relationships between faculty and students. Through high contact with faculty, students will extend their intellectual and interpersonal capacities. On completion of Jindal course requirements, the third year of our B.A. (Hons.) degree in the liberal arts and humanities will be at Rollins College as part of the study abroad programme. (See Rollins brochure/academic Programs for further information.) About the Programme JSLH incorporates a capacious variety of arts and humanities subjects as well as foundational Indian teachings in a unique B.A. (Hons.) programme. In the form of a core-elective pairing, students will develop the ability to formulate and test arguments. They will develop reflective thinking habits and interdisciplinary knowledge beyond any one set of skills. In the initial semesters, students will engage in the core curriculum of the liberal arts and humanities and their diverse relations and applications. In addition to continuing the core, students will apply themselves to a central subject leading to a concentration in their preferred choice. After completing their core studies at JSLH, students have two options: Pursue studies and a major at Rollins College or continue the JSLH program within a major focus at JSLH. Students who remain at JSLH will be able to take courses in the liberal arts program and also enroll in courses from the other JGU schools including Business, Law, Public Policy and International Affairs. During their culminating year at JSLH, students write a thesis related to their major or carry out a field study. Curriculum The core of the programme will revolve around offerings in a wide range of exciting disciplines: History: These courses will encourage the continuity of the historical in the contemporary alongside the tension between the local and the global. Through innovative research methods, students will grapple with the manifold complexity of globalized situations. Politics: Students will become aware of the varieties of exemplars and paradigms in political science. The centrality of the democratic imagination will manifest through the close study of psephology and policy analysis. Sociology and Anthropology: Through the study of the social sciences and their field-work methods, students will learn to understand the cultures from which they emerged as a prerequisite for understanding the cultures and societies they will encounter. Economics: Students will develop a core understanding of the central tenets of the discipline, including institutional issues, dynamics of contemporary markets, along with the theories, methodologies and categories that are central to economics. Literature: An intrinsic element of global understanding is cultural interpretation. In literature, students will gain insight into the literature produced in different areas of the world. Through a close study of different forms of imaginative expression as it relates to aesthetic and social relationships, students will gain literacy in self-interpretation, writing and cultural difference. Philosophy: Philosophy asks fundamental questions about individuality, action, knowledge and environment but it also poses challenging mechanisms for the formulation of modes of
3 enquiry. Students will thus confront a range of philosophical topics and methods in order to sharpen their ability to think and formulate complex problems while testing conclusions and solutions. Psychology: Psychology unites scientific enquiry and social investigation. By mastering both areas, students will confront the variety of psychological methods and topics: social psychology, cognitive psychology, organizational psychology, ethno-psychology. Expressive Arts: The visual and performing arts options permit Academic Overview The B.A. (Hons.) degree requires the completion of 24 three credit courses. These 24 courses are broken down into 19 core courses and 5 courses in a concentration area of study. The core courses (History, Politics, Sociology / Anthropology, Economics, Literature, Philosophy, Psychology, Performing / Fine Arts, Inter-disciplinary Seminar) provide a comprehensive foundation in arts and humanities study while the compulsory writing course teaches precision, elegance and creativity in writing. Students select their concentration from one of the approved liberal arts offerings. We seek ambitious students of a high academic calibre who require our world-class facilities and international faculty to nurture their intellectual/expressive growth as engaged global citizens. Our desired student will mix analytical concentration, self-reflective judgment, expressive imagination, tenacity and fearlessness in the face of intellectual risk. 4 JSLH Students participating in a conference on the Careers in Liberal Arts Pedagogy Education in the JSLH is globally-informed and interdisciplinary. The student we seek to produce will be nourished by this combination of local and international study. We draw on the realities of historical inheritance as a tool to understand the complexity of a mutable present. The implementation of interdisciplinary strategies are required for multi-faceted global problems. Students will have an opportunity to choose electives from various schools within the university. Thus, by taking from the widest purview of humanities and related subjects, we link past and present in a creative dialogue of evolving evaluative applicability. The result of this pioneering global education will be an analytical, scholarly and imaginative individual nurtured in the habits of democratic citizenship. Student-Centred Learning: JSLH enables students to become active learners by utilizing modern tools in the fields of experiential learning, reflective learning and service learning within interactive classrooms. Our diverse pedagogical styles support our curriculum and its critical examination of the relationship between individuality, knowledge formation and society within globalized citizenship. Professional Development: The B.A. (Hons.) in Liberal Arts and Humanities seeks to produce responsible, driven individuals with both pragmatic and resourceful imaginations for the transformation of India in a global context. Our projected graduates are effective communicators and critical thinkers. The degree will equip them with the ability to take up the professional and academic opportunities of their interest. The holistic nature of the degree will empower the students to take up a wide range of internships, projects and field-work. A Jindal education in the Liberal Arts and Humanities will produce students who unite thought and action. Arts and Languages: Exposure to classical and contemporary materials in the performing arts enhances productivity of thought and refines expression. Our exceptional facilities at JSLH unites artistic and performing disciplines to enable our students to reap the rewards of the collaborative spirit in theatre, the aesthetic understanding of art, the physical intelligence of dance and the acoustic precision in musical understanding. We also house an expansive foreign languages centre which underscores our international ethos and aids students in conceiving of language as a medium for thought. Research Our individual and collaborative research ranges from Twentieth- Century European literature, colonial history, Sanskrit poetics, political journalism, contemporary Indian international relations, religion and modernity, philosophy of time, human rights education, and economic regulation to film production. The JSLH houses its own flagship research journal and holds international conferences and seminars with world-leading scholars to showcase and develop its strengths as a pioneer in global inter-disciplinary arts, and humanities research. Selection Process Step-1: Register online for SAT ( home) or ACT ( Step-2: Apply online to JSLH submitting ACT/SAT registration number and test date. (Scores must be submitted once the test has been taken.) Submission of a 1000 word Personal Statement covering academic/creative/community-interests, reasons for interest in the programme and general ambitions. Provision provided for English language test, post admission, for student development. Step-3: Personal interview will be required for shortlisted candidates. Naveen Jindal Young Global Scholarships The aim of the scholarship, which is of variable amount, is to nurture, encourage and support young global leaders.
