15 Absolute must see & must do The Peace Palace Peace Palace Feel the warmth of the peace flame on your back as you admire the most photographed building in The Hague: the Peace Palace. It is the seat of the International Court of Justice, the only judicial organ of the United Nations not located in New York, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The visitors centre is open Tuesday through Sunday. Admission and audio tours are free of charge. Johannes Vermeer, Girl with the Pearl Earring, 1665, Mauritshuis, The Hague Mauritshuis The Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis, located at a unique 17th-century palace, houses a world-famous collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. This exceptional collection offers an amazing overview of Dutch and Flemish paintings with works by painters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Rubens, Jan Steen, Frans Hals, Van Dyck and Adriaen Coorte. 16

The 360 spectacular panorama of 120 metres wide and 14 metres high focuses on the sea, dunes and the old fishing village of Scheveningen and is painted by Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Escher in het Paleis Escher in het Paleis displays a permanent exhibition of the world-famous, phantasmagorical visions of artist M.C. Escher ( ) and is housed in the former winter palace of Queen Emma. This is the only public building in The Hague where the old palace function can still be experienced. The museum features interesting exhibitions throughout the year focusing on visual arts and crafts and fashion, but is primarily known for its work by Piet Mondrian, including his pièce de résistance Victory Boogie Woogie. Between 1850 and 1900 the Archipel neighbourhood was built and it was here that former colonists settled. It was during this period that the city earned its nickname Widow of Indonesia. Boasting some modern art, intimate theatre plays, world-famous paintings and bustling concerts all contribute to the city s reputation for being a magnificent cultural potpourri all year round. 1 January Scheveningen Beach, Unox New Year s Dive Want to start the New Year with a fresh dip into the ocean? On the 1st of January the New Year s Dive will take place at 12 o clock in the afternoon. Thousands of people will then dive into the sea to celebrate the start of a New Year. This tradition goes back more than 40 years May North Sea Regatta* During the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta the most beautiful vessels cut through the salty waters of the North Sea. The crème de la crème of yachting then battles it out in the Lightship Regatta (Scheveningen-Hook of Holland), the North Sea Regatta (Harwich- Scheveningen) and the Scheveningen Regatta. 27 May - 7 June Tong Tong Fair* The Tong Tong Fair (1959) is the biggest Eurasian fair in the world. The event is a sensory stimulating blend of a cultural festival, exhibition and food fest rolled into one, held in an archipelago of tents and stands. Hundreds of thousands of people gather in the harbour of Scheveningen for the festivities, to view the specially decorated fishing boats and to taste the first herring. 11 June - 13 September 2015 Mauritshuis: Rembrandt? The Case of Saul and David Saul and David has been meticulously researched and restored during recent years, and will be presented for the first time during this exhibition. In the past, Saul and David was considered one of Rembrandt s top pieces, but is it actually the work of the master? This exhibition shows how, using the latest technology and research methods, fascinating discoveries were made about the creation, the history and the attribution of the painting June Festival Classique* Sounds from intimate chamber music to large scale concerts waft across The Hague s historical inner city during Festival Classique. 38 Mauritshuis 3 October January 2016 Gemeentemuseum The Hague: Colour Unleashed This exhibition focuses on a period of rapid and revolutionary change that occurred in the art of the Netherlands and Belgium in the early twentieth century.
