1 TM ACCULINK 3100 Series Harmonica Block Adapter Feature Number 3100-F1-940 Installation Instructions Document Number 3100-A2-GZ40-10 November 1996 Overview This document contains procedures for installing the ACCULINK 3100 Series Harmonica Block Adapter on the Auxiliary Backplane of a 3000 Series Carrier. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS FOR STATIC-SENSITIVE DEVICES This product is designed to protect sensitive components from damage due to electrostatic discharge (ESD) during normal operation. When performing installation procedures, however, take proper static control precautions to prevent damage to equipment. If you are not sure of the proper static control precautions, contact your nearest sales or service representative. NOTE The Harmonica Block Adapter is not approved for use in Canada. 1

2 Preinstallation Check Verify that the Harmonica Block Adapter package includes the following parts: Quantity Equipment Part Number 1 Harmonica Block Cable Ties Cable Tie Holders #4-40 x.25 Screws You need a Phillips-head screwdriver to install the Harmonica Block Adapter with the enclosed screws. Installation Procedures To install the Harmonica Block Adapter, perform the following steps: Install the cable tie holders on the Auxiliary Backplane of a 3000 Series Carrier. Thread the cable ties through the cable tie holders. Plug the Harmonica Block Adapter onto the 50-pin T1 interface connector. Secure the Harmonica Block Adapter using the cable ties. Procedures for each of these steps appear below. Installing the Cable Tie Holders To install the cable tie holders on the Auxiliary Backplane, use the following procedure: 1. Unscrew the two hexagonal screwlocks from the 50-pin T1 interface connector. Refer to Figure Using the screws provided in the kit, install the cable tie holders on each side of the 50-pin T1 interface connector. Refer to Figure 2. You are now ready to thread the cable ties through the cable tie holders. 2

4 Threading the Cable Ties Through the Cable Tie Holder To thread the cable ties through the cable tie holders, use the following procedure: 1. Hold the cable ties so that the protruding heads are facedown toward the backplane. 2. Thread the cable ties through the cable tie holders. Refer to Figure 3. You are now ready to plug the Harmonica Block Adapter onto the 50-pin T1 interface connector. Figure 3. Threading the Cable Ties through the Cable Tie Holders 4

5 Plugging the Harmonica Block Adapter onto the 50-Pin T1 Interface Connector To plug the Harmonica Block Adapter onto the 50-pin T1 interface connector, use the following procedure: 1. Align the Harmonica Block Adapter with the 50-pin T1 interface connector. Refer to Figure Push the Harmonica Block Adapter so that it is seated into the 50-pin T1 connector. 6 Securing the Harmonica Block Adapter Using the Cable Ties To secure the Harmonica Block Adapter, use the following procedure: 1. Thread the cable ties through the holes in the Harmonica Block Adapter. Refer to Figure Fasten the cable ties and clip the ends of the cable ties. Refer to Figure 6. 8 Pin Assignments The pin assignments for the Harmonica Block Adapter are shown in Figure 7. Figure 7. Harmonica Block Pin Assignments Cabling To implement cascading cabling configurations, use a patch cable (Figure 8) to connect between the Harmonica Block Adapter and the DTE (DSX-1) connectors on the Auxiliary Backplane (Figure 9). In this example, six data ports are cascaded onto a single T1 line. Slot 1 contains two ports and the T1 network connection. Slot 3 is cascaded from its T1 connector to Slot 1 s DTE connector. Slot 4 is likewise cascaded to Slot 3. Note that Slot 2 was skipped to give better isolation between the T1 line connection and any adjacent DTE connectors. This isolation is not required but is recommended when possible. 8
