1 Replacing a Vantage Vue Transmitter Included in this replacement transmitter kit: SIM transmitter Cable tray Instructions Tools Required Phillips head screwdriver Small pliers To replace the transmitter on a Vantage Vue you will: 1. Change the Transmission ID on the original transmitter. 2. Remove the ISS cover. 3. Remove the sensor cable tray. 4. Remove the solar panel cabling from the solar panel. 5. Remove the original SIM transmitter. 6. Install the new SIM transmitter. 7. Route the solar panel cable. 8. Attach the solar panel cable. 9. Replace the sensor cable tray. 10. Replace the ISS cover. 11. Verify ID# and test reception 1. Change the Transmission ID on the original transmitter. Vantage Vue transmitters can transmit for up to 12 hours without power from the battery or solar panel. Because of this your console could synchronize with either the original or the new transmitter. In order to avoid this conflict you must change the transmission ID# of the original transmitter before you replace it. This will ensure that the console will only synchronize with the replacement transmitter. Your current system is likely communicating on the default ID#1. You will need to change the original transmitter ID to something besides ID#1. (Do not choose the ID# you intend to use). Davis Instruments, 3465 Diablo Avenue, Hayward, CA U.S.A

2 To change the transmission ID# on the original transmitter: 1. On the underside of the ISS, push and hold the transmitter ID push-button until the green LED begins flashing quickly. This indicates it is in the setup mode. FIGURE 1 2. Release the push-button, and the LED will go dark. 3. Push the push-button the number of times equal to your desired new transmitter ID. That is, if you want to change the ID to 3, push the button three times; for a desired ID of 4, push the push-button four times. Remember you are setting it to an ID you will NOT be using with the replacement SIM transmitter. After four seconds have elapsed with no further presses, the LED will blink the same number of times as the new transmitter ID. (After blinking the transmitter ID number, the light will begin to flicker each time a packet is transmitted, about every 2.5 seconds.) 2

3 2. Remove the ISS cover. Turn ISS over and remove the four Phillips-head screws. Lift off the white, upper portion of the ISS case. FIGURE 2 3

4 3. Remove the sensor cable tray. Note: Unscrew the screw that holds the Sensor Cable Tray in place. The figures below show an earlier version of the SIM transmitter that uses a gray, flat ribbon cable to connect the transmitter to the solar panel. Your transmitter may have a 2-wire, black cable connecting the transmitter to the solar panel. FIGURE 3 FIGURE 4 4

6 4. Remove the solar panel cabling from the solar panel. Before removing the transmitter we will remove the solar panel cable from the solar panel. There have been two styles of solar panel cabling. The older variety utilized a gray ribbon cable and a pogo pin plug. The current variety uses a two wire black cable hard wired to the transmitter. FIGURE 7 To remove the solar panel cable simply remove the nuts on the back of the solar panel and disconnect the wires. If you have the original model, discard the gray cable with the pogo pin plug at one end. You may find it easier to remove the nuts by removing the solar panel from its bracket. To lift out the solar panel lift the two locking tabs on the top of the panel and tilt the solar panel out of its bracket. FIGURE 8 6

7 5. Remove the original SIM transmitter. Unscrew the two screws that secure the SIM transmitter in place and lift the SIM transmitter out. Note: Do not remove the two screws that hold the circular SIM base. See Figure 9 for location of proper SIM transmitter screws. FIGURE 9 7

8 6. Install the new SIM transmitter. When replacing the SIM transmitter ensure that the Hall Effect sensor (wind direction) is properly laid in its place before seating the transmitter. The two holes in the Hall Effect sensor board will fit right over the two white plastic posts in the circular SIM base. 9 7. Attach the solar panel cable. It is important to connect the correct wire to the correct terminal on the solar panel. The solar panel has a positive and negative displayed on the front. These correspond to the screw terminals on its back. One of the black wires has a sticker on it to show that it is positive. FIGURE 12 Take care to connect the positive cable to the positive terminal. Likewise for the negative cable and terminal. Simply slide the wire's terminal ring around the screw terminal on the solar panel, place the toothed lock washer on the screw then add and tighten the nut. Do the same with the other wire. 9

10 8. Route the solar panel cable. Route the solar panel cable over the top of the transmitter as shown. FIGURE 12 FIGURE 14 Clip the solar panel in place. (See Figure 8, page 6.) 10

11 9. Replace the sensor cable tray. When inserting the Sensor Cable tray, line up the tray rails with the grooves or slots in the circular base. FIGURE 15 Insert the tray lifted up at a 45 angle. Once the tray is fully inserted set the tray down so that it locks behind the white plastic wall meant to hold the tray in. Re-insert the screw that holds the sensor cable tray in place. 12 FIGURE Replace the ISS cover. Reinsert the four screws. (See Figure 2, page 3.) 11. Verify ID# and Test Reception. Verify the ID# that the replacement SIM transmitter is transmitting on. To do this, press and release the white push-button on the bottom of the ISS and observe the adjacent green LED. (See Figure 1.) The green light should flash the number the SIM transmitter ID is set to. If it is not the same ID that the console is listening to, see your Vantage Vue console manual for details on how to verify the ID# the console is set to listen to. If the transmission ID is not the same as the ID the console is listening to you will need to change the ISS's transmission ID# to the same number that the console is set to listen to. (See page 2.)
