1 Keynote I Imparting New Degrees of Freedom to Next Generation Displays and Cameras Aditi Majumder Associate Professor University of California, Irvine Department of Computer Science 4056 Bren Hall Irvine, CA ics.uci.edu We have seen a tremendous advancement in the past decade by which we will soon find cameras and projectors everywhere in diverse sizes, form factors and resolutions. More importantly, with this trend, users would soon seek greater control over the resources (e.g. intensity, spatial and spectral resolution, size) and capabilities (e.g. interaction, multi-modal interfaces, connectivity, flexibility, mobility, portability) available in a display or a camera. This talk presents our work-in-progress at UCI on imparting new degrees of freedom and greater user control to create the next generation displays and cameras. The talk will focus on three main aspects. First, a new display paradigm called ubiquitous displays where displays are not mere carriers of information, but active members of the workspace interacting with data, user, environment and other displays. The goal is to integrate such active displays seamlessly with the environment making them ubiquitous to multiple users and data. Such ubiquitous display can be a critical component of the future collaborative workspace. Second, the technologies for ubiquitous displays will be shown to be applicable for creating cooperative mobile displays using mobile projection-enabled devices. Finally, initial inroads towards content-adaptive user-controllable capture and display devices will be presented. Aditi Majumder is an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science in University of California, Irvine. She received her PhD from Department of Computer Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Her research resides at the junction of computer graphics, vision, visualization and human-computer interaction. Her research focuses on novel displays and camera exploring new degrees of freedom and quality while keeping them truly commodity, easily accessible to the common man. She has won three best paper awards in in premier venues of IEEE Visualization, IEEE VR and IEEE PROCAMS. She is the co-author of the book Practical Multi- Projector Display Design. She was the general co-chair of IEEE Virtual Reality 2012, program co-chair xvii

2 of IEEE Virtual Reality 2011, conference co- chair for ACM Virtual Reality Software and Technology 2007, general co-chair of the Projector-Camera Workshop (PROCAMS) 2005, and the program chair of PROCAMS She has played a key role in developing the first curved screen multi-projector display that was marketed by NEC/Alienware. She has advised Disney Imagineering for advances in their projection based theme park rides. She has received the Faculty Research Incentive Award in 2009 and Faculty Research Midcareer Award in 2011 in the School of Information and Computer Science in UCI. She is the recipient of the NSF CAREER award in 2009 for Ubiquitous Displays Via a Distributed Framework. xviii

3 Keynote II Developing Visualization and Virtual Reality Technologies in R&D for Energy Industry Challenges Jens Grimsgaard Leading Researcher Geophysics Interpretation TNE RD RCB GEOL Statoil ASA Virtual Reality technology was embraced by parts of the Oil and Gas industry in the late 90 s. Expectations for the technology were improved data analysis, communication and quality, the ability to define new prospects which were not revealed with traditional methods, defining new methods for increased recovery from existing oil fields and to drill cheaper, faster and more accurate. 15 years later we look back upon numerous projects with many success stories. The wisdom and insight gained should aid us in our goals and strategy for the future; to continue improving methods using new frontier technology. The talk will take a look at several of the projects which have been carried out in Norsk Hydro and Statoil and sum up lessons learned. Staying on the cutting or bleeding edge and exploring new technology is always a big challenge. What technologies may we benefit from in the future? How? For whom? And when? Jens Grimsgaard (b.1959) finished his master in Physics/Geophysics at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim in Since 1984 he has been employed in Norsk Hydro which later merged with Statoil to become StatoilHydro, which changed their name back to Statoil in From the very start in the company, Jens worked with Geo-applications, Computer operations and database programming. During the 28 years in the company he has been working in Exploration, Production, and the Computer Department before he moved in 1999 to Research. Here he worked initially with 4D studies, Direct Hydrocarbon Indicators (DHI s) and Carbonate Geophysics, but the main focus the past 13 years has been the use and application of Virtual Reality and Advanced Visualization and development of prototypes and applications to aid the geologist and geophysicist in data analysis. Jens is at the moment the research project leader of Exploration Reconnaissance, heading a group of five to develop new methods for visualization and analysis for exploration of frontier basins. 4 Keynote III Clinical Virtual Reality: A Brief Review of the Future! Albert Skip Rizzo University of Southern California Associate Director - Institute for Creative Technologies Research Professor - Dept. of Psychiatry and School of Gerontology Los Angeles, CA, USA arizzo@usc.edu This presentation will provide an overview of the many forms of Virtual Reality that have been applied across a diverse range of clinical disorders and research questions. I will start with an overview of the use of VR for Exposure Therapy for anxiety disorders, addictive behaviors and with OIF/OEF military personnel with PTSD. This will be followed by brief overviews of research and clinical applications of VR for cognitive assessment/rehabilitation, motor rehabilitation, pain distraction and social interaction. The social interaction overview will conclude with the detailing of an emerging project area that involves the creation of artificially intelligent virtual human patients for clinical training and as online healthcare support guides. Albert Skip Rizzo received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He is an Associate Director at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies (Medical Virtual Reality) and has Research Professor appointments with the USC Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and at the USC Davis School of Gerontology. Dr. Rizzo conducts research on the design, development and evaluation of Virtual Reality (VR) systems targeting the areas of clinical assessment, treatment and rehabilitation. This work spans the domains of psychological, cognitive and motor functioning in both healthy and clinical populations. In the psychological domain, the Virtual/Iraq/Afghanistan project has focused on the creation of a VR exposure therapy application for combat-related PTSD with OIF/OEF service members and veterans. This system, now available at 55 clinics, is now being retooled for a stress resilience/coping strategy-training application for use at prior to a combat deployment. He also oversees the ICT Virtual Patients Lab that is creating artificially intelligent virtual patients that clinicians can use to practice skills required for challenging clinical interviews and diagnostic assessments (sexual assault, resistant patients, suicide assessment, etc.). His cognitive work has addressed the use of VR applications to test and train attention, memory, visuospatial abilities and executive function. In the motor domain, he has developed VR Game systems to address physical rehabilitation post stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury and for those aging with a disability (currently xx

5 funded by NIDRR as the RERC entitled Optimizing/Participation/Through/Technology). He has also investigated the use of VR for pain distraction at LA Children s Hospital and is currently designing gamebased VR scenarios to address issues of concern with children having autistic spectrum disorder. His research also involves designing and evaluating 3D User Interface devices and interaction methods and he has created a graduate level Industrial and Systems Engineering course at USC entitled, Human Factors and Integrated Media Systems. In the area of Gerontology, Dr. Rizzo has served as the program director of the USC Alzheimer s Disease Research Center and has conducted a VR study of visuo-spatial and way-finding ability with persons with Alzheimer s disease. xxi
