RHI tents 28 Boulevard Way Capricorn Park Muizenburg Cape Town 7945 South Africa 1 Purpose of Test 2 Scope To assess the performance of a fabric when it is tested in accordance with the procedures called up in BS 7837:1996. BS 7837:1996 specifies requirements for flammability of fabrics and fabric assemblies for use in the construction of textile structures such as marquees, large tents, temporary buildings, awnings and other textile structures utilizing large areas of a flexible textile membrane other than air-supported structures, when tested in accordance with test 2B (bottom edge ignition) of BS 5438 : Description of Test Specimen The description of the specimen given above has been prepared from information provided by the sponsor of the test and Interscience Communications Ltd was not involved in any selection or sampling procedure. The product was a cream coloured nominally 1mm thick FR treated coated fabric referenced RHI ALLWEATHER MK4 having a mass of 806g/m 2. A photograph showing two faces of the fabric is given in Appendix 1. The sponsor of the test did not provide further details relating to the composition of the material from which the tape was produced. 4 Water soaking treatment In accordance with the requirements given in Clause 5 of BS 7837: 1996 the samples were subjected to the water soaking procedure described in clause 3 of BS 5651: Page 2 of 5

3 5 Conditioning of Test Specimens The specimens were received on 21 September The test specimens were conditioned at 20 ± 2 o C and 65 ± 5% relative humidity for a minimum period of 24 hours prior to testing. 6 Date of Test The test was performed on 7 October Test Procedure Test was carried out in accordance with the procedure specified in BS 5438: 1989 Incorporating Amendment 1 and 2 in clause 10 Test 2B Limited flame spread: bottom edge ignition. 8 Test Results The test results relate only to the behaviour of the specimens of the product under the particular conditions of test; they are not intended to be the sole criterion for assessing the potential fire hazard of the product in use. The test results relate only to the specimens of the product in the form in which they were tested. Small differences in the composition or thickness of the product may significantly affect the performance during the test and may therefore invalidate the test results. 4 9 Requirements: The following requirements are given in clause 8 of BS 7837:1996. The sample shall be deemed to perform satisfactorily (pass), if, for at least five of the six test specimens: a) the duration of flaming does not exceed 5 s after removal of the igniting flame; and b) the lowest boundary of any flame does not reach the upper edge or either vertical edge; and c) the filter paper does not smoulder or flame. The sample shall be deemed not to conform to this British Standard (fail) if more than two test specimens show any of the effects listed in items a) to c) If two test specimens show any of the above effects, then a further six specimens shall be tested. In this case, the sample shall be deemed to `pass' if five of the second set of six specimens perform satisfactorily. 10 Conclusion The fabric satisfies the requirements of the standard.
